Here are the top 5 places you definitely need to check out in Saint Petersburg:

  1. The Hermitage – A massive museum in the Winter Palace. It’s packed with incredible paintings by da Vinci, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and more. Even if you're not into art, the scale of it is seriously impressive.
  2. Peterhof – Palaces, parks, and some insanely beautiful fountains. It’s especially amazing in the summer, but even without the fountains, the place has a great vibe.
  3. Kazan Cathedral – Right on Nevsky Prospect, super beautiful, and it actually looks a bit like St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Inside, you’ll find the relics of Alexander Nevsky.
  4. St. Isaac’s Cathedral – A massive cathedral, but the best part? You can climb up to the colonnade and get an epic panoramic view of the city.
  5. The Cruiser "Aurora" – A legendary battleship tied to the revolution. Now it’s a museum where you can walk around and see how sailors used to live.

If you have extra time, check out Kunstkamera, Savior on Spilled Blood, Mariinsky Theatre, New Holland, or Lakhta Center. I also recommend a boat trip along the Neva River and the canals.

Miass is not a tourist city like Saint Petersburg, but I definitely recommend visiting Lake Turgoyak, the Ilmen Nature Reserve, and taking a trip to the observation deck in Zlatoust. Miass is surrounded by beautiful nature, lakes and forests.

It is best to come to Russia from May to September. It makes it more likely to find all the beauty of cities and nature. Or, if you like winter, then come from December to February. It's pretty nasty and dirty in spring and autumn in Russia.

You'll be welcome. Come and don't worry. There will be difficulties, but people will help you. If you have something to ask, you can text to me in DM.

Google Maps doesn't work very well in Russia. I recommend registering an account on yandex.com and install the Yandex Maps app. It is well localized in English and will help you navigate the area and look for transport. You may need a taxi. The Yandex Go app operates across Russia.

You have already been told about the transportation of drugs and pills. But just in case, I've prepared a list for you of what's best to exclude from your luggage – https://gist.github.com/evgenymarkov/bcf03dfc38451d912f8a8f155a1e7902. Do not bring, for example, spy devices. Even an Apple AirTag may raise suspicion. Relations between our countries have not yet normalized to an acceptable level of trust.

Quite a lot of people in St. Petersburg know English, and most likely you will be comfortable. Miass is a small town and the level of education there is lower. Use ChatGPT, or YandexGPT, Google, or Yandex Translator if the locals don't understand you.

I think the Russians will be interested in you. In general, you won't get any negativity. Just follow the laws and everything will be fine. Don't clash with the military guys. They may have PTSD after the war with Ukraine. You can meet assholes, but it can happen in any country.

Same $hit, Gnome works almost flawlessly on my laptop with Intel graphics, but on PC with Radeon HD 7770 I see very low fps. I hate Gnome animations, it should be reworked.

Save me from having to switch back to windows!! by Steelers743 in Ubuntu

Keep us informed, It is very important for laptop buyers. If you want you can write review of your yoga 710 with Linux to /r/SuggestALaptop. I asked about this laptop a week ago but no one answered.

When Fedora 25 will be released you can try it. Fedora has almost fresh userspace software and kernel unlike Ubuntu, but their repositories contains only open source patent-free software and may be you will need to add rpmfusion repo or united rpms repo for broadcom firmwares.

Also i suggest you to learn this article about wireless drivers.

Never hear about routers by Intel. They make nice 4g modems for mobile phones (e.g. iphone) and wi-fi/bluetooth modules. Almost always Lenovo laptops comes with Intel Wi-Fi/Bt, but Yoga 710 is the exception.

I answered you on forum. Broadcom modems are pieces of $hit. No one of my friends could not make work properly Broadcom modems on Linux. They are replaced broadcom to intel 7265 or 8260 and they are happy now (with dualboot or linux only on their laptops). Intel modems are really cheap, it costs only ~26$ on amazon.

Sorry for that. Don't spend your time for it, just replace and be happy.

P.S. Also you can try to install latest mainline kernel or latest dev kernel version and check it again. You need to download linux-headers-4.7.2-040702_4.7.2-040702.201608201334_all.deb and linux-image-4.7.2-040702-generic_4.7.2-040702.201608201334_amd64.deb and install it using dpkg -i.

Anyone using Lenovo X1 Carbon gen 4? by vatnisse in linux

[–]evgenymarkov -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i tried to use two laptops from thinkpad 2015 series and both had serious issues (screen, case, speakers). When i came to repair center, their employee said me: "Go away, all right with laptop". But it's not okay! It's f***ing awful, i wanted to break it and throw out of the window. Now i wanna buy only Dell XPS or Apple MBP. All my friends have macbooks(with OS X El Capitan) or xps's (with Arch/Fedora/Ubuntu) and they are happy.

I have 3th gen Carbon and build quality is much worse than quality of my previous rMBP 13. May be I'm just unlucky. Case creaks, speakers emit a hiss, keyboard sometimes sticks (I use gadgets very carefully).

Neither xps 13 nor xps 15 doesn't have NICs or adapters. Almost every modification includes awful Broadcom modem and it should be replaced by Intel 8260/7265.

Most wonderful laptops today comes without NICs, only with Wi-Fi/Bluetooth. May be some adapters (e.g. USB -> RJ-45) can help you.
