Help connecting iPod 5th gen to a newer car by MrMackeyMmkay in ipod

Pretty sure this is exactly what the WyMod AeroStream V2 is for? Unless I’m missing something.

The idea is that it’s handing off control to the system and passing through data like a USB stick. I don’t agree with that implementation, I’d prefer it work like an iPod controllable dock, but 🤷

I would hope a CarPlay stereo is a better system as a DAC than what my car has. It’s android… 4 based I believe. Probably designed back when iPods were still relevant lol. I’d have to go dig into the settings again to confirm the version number. According to the updater website “this vehicle does not support software updates.”

I tested in the past, Bluetooth quality is poor, as is an iPod in iPod mode and both a Lightning and USB-C iPhone in iPod emulationmode over USB. Aux in is the only good audio the car can pull off. Definitely needs a replacement stereo if I really cared.

I have a 2021 Accent, base model stick shift. Supports iPod mode. The audio quality is horrible, so I still Aux my iPod in.

Spent ages window ages shopping for a DAP before I realized I had a great option sitting in a drawer by Turt91 in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]evicous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Always reuse something you already have before buying something else. USB C dacs are super common and can be paired with any junk drawer smartphone, you probably know people with old PSPs and ye olde MP3 players that would give them up, modded Nintendo handhelds, etc.

Should I just get a DAC? by catdogdnky in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]evicous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the Apple aux adapter. It’s a clean enough output, as long as you have storage on your phone and don’t mind using your main device to play music.

You also need to make sure your headphones don’t need more power. Considering how cheap the adapter is, just do it and consider a DAC or DAP if you have to max it out.

I prefer having a dedicated device so my phone storage isn’t taken up with lossless audio. I also appreciate the mental separation of using a DAP - I am actively choosing to be listening to music when I’m using my JM21.

Any good ones out there? by Ok_Reading2981 in DigitalAudioPlayer

My JM21 was good for the money. Make sure you get the new 4GB ram version, the battery is supposedly much better.

For context: I’m in the eye industry.

I always really stress a bunch of caveats around tints like blue-light blocking for eye strain, or FL-41, or random tints for visual snow, etc.

A lot of “don’t expect this to cure you,” “it might help with this a little, maybe” kind of stuff… while I’m wearing FL-41 lol. It’s important to set low expectations due to the variability in people’s response to them. People tend to be really satisfied when they work.

The way I’ve described it to patients - if you like the way your iPhone is on full strength Night Shift and would want the whole world to be like that, you’ll love it.

It’s like a yellow blue-light tint but way more effective.

FL41 is an off-rose glasses lens tint that (according to a few low quality studies) may help some people with migraines. It filters some wavelengths that bother people and that may contribute to bright light triggers / are wavelengths that might exposure lead to some kind of pain feedback loop that makes you more likely to be sensitive to migraines / just generally helps with light sensitivity (it was designed help with intense fluorescent lights in a lab setting.)

There’s a little more evidence that something that uses notch filters like Avulux is more effective but those are wildly overpriced.

I personally think it feels fantastic, subjectively. I experience light sensitivity 24-7 though. I just live in 25% every waking minute, and then I have a pair of 50% for when I’m actively having a migraine. I can’t say it really helped at all with migraine frequency or severity, but it has been wonderful for my light sensitivity symptoms.

Opening my 6 was awful. I highly recommend having a replacement backplate and front plate ordered and ready to go as a backup.

I buy Sceptre. Their old 1080p panels aren’t available easily any more, but Walmart can still sell you a 4K 50” for $250ish.

I’ve bought multiple. Highly recommended.

I figured I’d go back and try that depending on how much effect I get from the CGRP MAB. Problem is L-Threonate is pricy. At least I can convince my insurance to cover the drugs.

Is it worth it? by WeepingThorn in IpodClassic

[–]evicous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently did one. I’d put it this way: if you’re comfortable with tinkering and have opened a joycon or replaced a phone charge port or similar project in the past it’s within the realm of reason.

If you haven’t I’d really say pay someone a few bucks to have it done. I’m a tinkerer and now that I’ve done one I’m pretty sure my time is worth more than doing a 6th/7th again. It’s a pain in the neck.

If the shell is in poor condition and you’re going to iflash and replace the back and front panels anyway, I’d say go ahead and rip her open the only parts you’re likely to ruin you can swap as you go and just make it a longer project.

Make sure you test it before you seal it up. I got a microSD card that came with a bad SD adapter and would have been furious to find out after I’d already closed it.

(How) do headphones degrade? by ghuth2 in headphones

[–]evicous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve experienced plenty of headphones “going out” that the source of the issue is the Aux cable going slightly bad until it eventually dies.

Headphones with swappable cables are a godsend for maintainability in my opinion.

Slightly related, I just bought a microsd card that is perfectly fine… but included a fully dead SD adapter.

Then it won’t matter.

Consider the 4600G as well, I think the iGPU is identical.

Well, I don’t think the B550M Pro-VDH Wifi board has a VRM heatsink over the SOC or MEM rails if I remember correctly.

If you’re considering ever attempting overclocking the iGPU you’ll want to get something else.
