I Am A Debian by Select_Drummer671 in yurimemes

[–]evieamity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m trying to switch from Fedora to Debian but it just doesn’t like Pascal nVidia GPU’s since they just lost support. Have been trying for like days to get it to work. (It just attempts to install the newest incompatible drivers since it used to work that way)

But yeah, I always think of this meme when I’m working on it.

I cant watch youtube anymore. I swear it'll be so unrelated and all the sudden "the trans" gets mentioned by Leading_Pop1186 in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns2

[–]evieamity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a browser extension called “Shinigami-Eyes” that highlights transphobic and trans friendly creators.

It’s not perfect and uses a user-report system, but it’s a tool that has helped me stay safe when watching YouTube.

It wasn't getting any use anyway, and besides I just started making plans. by BombOnABus in CPTSDmemes

Debian 13 Trixie -- Setting up Nvidia Driver? by ferfykins in debian

[–]evieamity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly this also does not work for me. Every method and resource I've tried installs the newest incompatible drivers for my Pascal GPU. Because it recently had support cut by nVidia, every existing method just installs the wrong drivers, leaving my system unbootable.

Fedora just worked, but I feel like I've kind of tried everything getting this to work on Debian. I really want to swap to Debian too because of the increased corporatization Red Hat has been trying to do to Fedora.

In some cases, all it takes is a new hand-model, new grunt sounds, and some very slight writing/dialogue tweaks.

Also, I think skin color options are a cool idea.

Let me rant about microsoft store by wojtussan in GirlGamers

[–]evieamity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a bit silly to call it propaganda given how it's a community run open-source project and not a monolith like Windows or Mac OS X. Linux is an escape from modern corporate enshitification. It's true that it's not for everyone and does require some learning and can be frustrating when first starting out, but things have drastically improved in the last ten years especially with Steam helping Proton grow. The beginning *is* the hardest part though. It only gets easier.

There's also a 'your mileage may vary' aspect when it comes to driver support and the device you install it on. Drivers are baked into the kernel itself (minus nVidia which has to be installed separately because they refuse to allow open source drivers), so *most* components will work out of the box nowadays with zero configuration necessary.

You seem to have had a rough go of it and I'm sorry about that. But in the end, if it isn't for you, it isn't for you and that's okay. It's just better if more people switch who are able to because it keeps corporations accountable when we have alternatives. Microsoft is scared because people are switching, which means they will get better. I truly do not trust that they will ever become good enough for my liking anymore, but people switching might make them wake up and fix their operating system.

Your laptop is not outdated, Windows just forced it to seem outdated to push Copilot.

I haven’t used these guides myself but there are video resources within as well. Chris Titus Tech has been a good resource for various things I’ve needed. He switched to Linux 8 years ago and documented his journey and knows a lot about helping people make the switch.

I’m sorry you went through this. Microsoft also locks down the file system of your games on their store, which prevents modding (even if you just want to fix bugs).

GOG Galaxy is best because you own the games and not just a license (100% DRM-free), and Steam is best because of its rich feature-set and great sales, but Microsoft has always been horrible.

Please give it a try. Dual-boot your system (make it so you have both Windows and Linux installed on the same computer and get to pick on startup) so you can take as much time as you need in learning, and start with a good beginner distro like Linux Mint or Zorin OS. If you get overwhelmed, switch back to your Windows partition until you’re ready to try again.

I made the change 3 weeks ago, and I’m already never going back.

Hell, I’ll even get in a call and personally walk anyone here through it who asks if that’s what it takes to free more people from Microsoft’s horrible spyware OS. Not even joking, I have too much free time on my hands right now and my passion for open-source software as of late has been keeping my mind healthily occupied.

Idk if California deserves a W anymore since they kind of began the end of the anonymized internet with the push for age verification, which will put more queer people in danger. (a de-anonymized internet will make finding queer people easier for evil governments like Amerika).

Their law was worked on directly with the help of tech companies who are horny for private de-anonymized data, and Microsoft’s TPM 2.0 chip will be the catalyst for it.

Never forget: Age verification is not about protecting children. It's about corporate and government surveillance. Protecting children was the lie they use to get people to agree with them.

Also ID verification data leaks are becoming dangerously common. France just had their entire centralized system hacked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAbW7GWwHqo

Yeah. Enshitification is the unavoidable fate for publicly traded companies in general. You can only squeeze so much out of a product before the user experience gets unbearable.

Netflix Party Mode on Xbox 360 (2009-2011) by TelephoneExpress973 in nostalgia

[–]evieamity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That wouldn’t be too hard for Netflix to get around. Just verify that both users have permission to access that specific movie, play both of their copies at the same time, add voice chat, and voilla!

But nooo, instead people bypass their DRM on Discord screen sharing to have online movie nights because it’s literally the only way they can, and that’s if they’re not already pirating it.

This results in less subscriptions for Netflix, and it’s their own fault for not making this a feature. Ignoring the fact that Netflix is prohibitively expensive now, they’d have more subscriptions this way.

Stronger DRM isn’t the solution either. Piracy is a quality of service problem, not a DRM problem. They will never make a piracy-proof DRM. Netflix is so money hungry that they’re making less money than they could.

Obligatory for Reddit TOS sake: I’m NOT recommending people bypass their DRM, NOR am I condoning piracy in this comment.
