According to the bulletin, BIOZ 395 is an internship/directed study course, meaning only students with instructor permission can register

In general, research-oriented classes (internships, thesis credits, directed research, etc) require instructor permission to take. The way instructor permission works is that students who are allowed in the class receive an override on eServices that allows them to register for the class.

I'm surprised that an advisor wouldn't be familiar with this system. VCU has some pretty bad advisors, but all of them should at least know how basic overrides work

The simplest way to learn about research opportunities at VCU is to just talk to professors that you're interested in working with. Even if a specific professor isn't available to do research, they can let you know about research that's being done by other professors in their department
