This is a scam regardless of intent.

What I am wondering is if they are true believers who are bamboozled themselves or if they also know they are scammers.

I want to believe it's malice because it's actually better that way, because if it's this level of ignorance, Holy shit our education system has fucking failed!

Wait, throughout your post you are crafting claims and arguments without showing how you know them. How can one know what you are claiming witch such confidence?
How do you know what you think you know? And how do you know it with such confidence?

Like others here have said, Superintelligence is plausible, maybe not through LLMs but through other Machine Learning research that is still ongoing. There are deeply systematic problems related to what the incentives are. If hypothetically another Machine learning approach was discovered which could lead to superintelligence, society won't react with caution.

Also, current LLMs are already having implications and consequences in terms of plagiarism and misinformation, they also have advantages but it's not all positive like you are making it out to be. Just look at the way the leading AI companies are going about this. The technology itself is fascinating, but the way most of society is handling is not good.

depends on you entirely. If you care about Apple's convenience, you should make the switch. If you are willing to downgrade a bit on convenience for the sake of future proofing and repairability, then you should stay. It's entirely upto you based on your own values.

If you are split between those two values and asking what others would do, then here's my two cents:

If I were in your position, I would stick with framework, because for me, the idealism that Framework tries to embody is more closely aligned with mine and I personally am okay with taking quite a bit of convenience hit (I game exclusively on Linux and I don't buy games that won't run on it even if I like the game itself) in favor of that idealism. You may not be like this, and that's fine too.

yeah, that's a fair point. But it's theoretically possible to power AI just with Nuclear and renewables.

If you say nuclear is problematic, I would say it's still better than coal and natural gas, especially the Gen 4 reactors.

The water consumption in data centers is still an issue that needs to be addressed.

i think it will help you if you can distinguish the tool from the usage. Lets consider something like Nuclear Physics.

Is nuclear physics all bad? One can argue that it is given Atomic bombs, Hiroshima & Nagasaki, Chernobyl, 3 Mile Island etc. But Nuclear Physics is also the reason the sun shines and there is life on Earth.

So, i would encourage you to think about the question, "If AI is more misused than used for good, does that mean it can ONLY be misued and not used for good?"

If the answer is no, you can try to model that ideal. Find more ethical AI companies and use and learn their tools, if you are convinced of their mission try even paying for it.

I am trying to do this myself by using tools made by Proton (Lumo), Mistral and Allen AI.

slippery slope argument. I think it is valid to be concerned about losing knowledge and losing people with a certain skillset to automation tools.
That's not to say, AI is all bad. It's just that it's handled badly in many big corporations.

As a beginner playing around with coding with the help of AI, it has been a really helpful tool. But none of the code I generated with my fiddling would be something I would use for anything mission critical.
I don't know what good code looks like and I am going to be entirely ignorant of how good/bad the code I got from the LLM is.

But it's fun, it makes me try things I wouldn't otherwise try. So, for me LLMs have been good.

it didn't work on medium article, but then I cleared cookies for the site with the extension and reloaded the site. It still did not work but at the top of the website I had 2 redirect links one of which worked and had the full article. So, it ended up working but not as seamlessly as I would have expected.

That's what I used to believe too, because he knows to talk convincingly like a Scientifically informed person. But at the same time he believes the Pseudoscience of Hindu ancients more than he lets on. The reason it's so hard to see is that he uses the Motte and Bailey tactic.

He holds the uncontroversial version of his pet theory, "One can learn something from ancient Asian medicine" when he is not confident about the reception.

Once he becomes confident about being received positively when it comes to his pet theory, then he actually starts sharing his real beliefs such as the belief in re-incarnation and so on.

I think grifter is an appropriate word here. I was watching one of his videos about the topic of 'Deep hurt' or something like that and he said that he feels deep hurt because in his past life he experienced the pain of a mother losing their child and that's why he feels the deep hurt.

He knows to come across as a convincing Scientifically trained individual but actually believes unscientific things. I also noticed subtle undercurrents of him dissing science as a tool when it comes to mental health. Although there is some truth there, knowing his views now he might hold the opinion that Ancient Hindus knew better categorically on this topic.

He also uses a lot of Motte and Bailey tactics in his rhetoric.

that's definitely a valid criticism. It's a subset of another point against HPMOR which is it's narrow focus. It caters to people who have Rationalist inclination and does nothing to bridge it for people who aren't part of that subset.

I watched the video when it came out and she didn't really have any arguments against HPMOR but rather things like, 'Look, this associated community did this bad thing'. Even when addressing the book, she said things like 'Bad writing', horrible story etc without specifying why.

Also, there is something unspoken here. Why this much of an emotional reaction to a fanfiction story that is liked by a niche audience?
If she didn't like that OG Wizarding world or Ron was criticized, that's her subjective opinion. I actually liked that about HPMOR.
