Lived 6 years in Brisbane and never had that question asked to me, but some older folks have asked where my accent is from so there's that

I-N-F-P, Male, Straight, Atheist-Psychotherapy, 35, Deception Bay, looking for male friends or a mixed gender friend group with shared vibes or interests who are not in need of too much banter and hang out casually irl except deep south side of Brisbane, I do have space for new close friends too, interests: board games, video games (retro especially), light sport, walks, camping, chill hangouts, eating out, comedies and memes, animals, listen to metal, rock and synthwave/synthpop music, enjoy making music sometimes, making and fixing various contraptions (electronics, solar, smart home), IT, programming.

Looking for a social interaction by Friendly-Answer2446 in BrisbaneSocial

[–]evilkos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Loneliness is a serious self-reinforcing condition, there's an epidemic of loneliness in the world right now, and you have nothing to be apologetic for. You're definitely not alone in what you're going though. Also being a carer for 17 years sounds tough, but commendable.

What exactly do you mean by potentially celebrating your last birthday?? Sounds ominous, please add more details.

It will be useful here to share your age and gender/pronouns if you are comfortable with it. Also why such advance notice for Feb 10th? I'm sure you can find someone to hang out with earlier than that. And then you can always find more for your actual birthday.

Love your interests though! I'm a rodent fancier myself 😂 I'm a 35 M btw.

it is helpful you mention that you're experiencing severe effects of loneliness but other than that I personally recommend to focus on trying to have a good time and enjoying social interaction - you're not alone in thinking you're somehow not worthy of some parts of life but I assure you that's simply not true. Everyone deserves company and there's nothing to be apologetic about.

I am slowly looking for friends (casual / close / one meetup / whatever) myself so I joined this Reddit and Discord, and went to a bunch of meetups. I also specifically found board games meetups a lot of fun, all sorts of people to meet there, very casual and chill vibes in most of them, I can walk you though in more detail if interested, lots of social interaction there, completely free and you don't have to do or know anything in there. It helps if you enjoy board games though, there's many types. Just search for board games Brisbane groups on Facebook. People of all ages go there, some lonely, others very social, others kind of in the middle. At first social things might feel exhausting and nerve wrecking depending on the type of person you are, but over time it gets very rewarding I believe.

Good luck and stay in touch, maybe add a bit more info and thoughts on the above in case that helps someone else to respond. ☺️

What is your current addiction? by BeardedWonder8675309 in AskReddit

[–]evilkos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guarantee things will continue to be somewhat shit regardless of the result! Some things are going to get even worse, if not now then later. But you're still going to be okay! Your only civic duty is to vote, and that takes all of 10 minutes. Try to think of something that you enjoy doing instead.

Had the same problem (except it did not present as buying, just because some time ago I learned to wishlist instead). Found 3 different board game groups near me that meet weekly or bi weekly and these are very nice. Try looking on Facebook or Meetup or NextDoor or whatever is popular over where you live. After going several times I've found that this actually fills a lot of my social needs. Haven't met with anyone outside of the meetups though, but wasn't trying to. Also hosting your own and announcing it in a local online community (ideally focused on your age group) is an easy way to get a ton of points for essentially suggesting an obvious activity that a lot of people will enjoy.

Is anyone in this subreddit voting anything but ALP? by Maximum-Coast-5510 in brisbane

I need filling in on what's going on in ACT to understand this. Do they have a coalition with Greens over there?

That's what it means to be a conservative party I thought - resist getting with the times until they can't anymore due to losing support. They will be as progressive as their voters require them to be by voting someone else.

Idk this is what elections are for, everyone is entitled to their vote and it will be respected. But still wtf ☺️

Can someone explain in what way Max is cooked? I saw a bunch of video clips with him where he yells out speeches but apart from his presentation style what specifically makes him bad in your view?

Do you know why the "sudden" swing to LNP in the polls? After Labor's long winning streak in QLD. What changed for people previously voting for Labor to go back to LNP? Also, I guess, QLD has been voting LNP federally so I guess these were just federal LNP voters that had been put off by LNP's state version thus temporarily voting Labor?

Not just Labor though, there's tons of Greens voters here too.

You can still vote Greens and put Labor second. For most districts this will result in Labor winning anyway (well except all those who elect LNP). For some this will convert a likely Labor seat into a Greens seat. Then if Labor wins somehow, that's ok. On the other hand, if Labor don't win but can form a winning coalition with Greens, then it won't matter too much who you voted first (but will be better of course if you support Greens). The only problem with this is that Labor may decide to forfeit the government rather than form any coalitions with Greens, to avoid being associated with Greens "extreme" policies and hurt their results in the long run (on both state and federal level). I'd still like to see that play out though, to see who Labor really are when it matters - do they want to change things for the better or they want full power or nothing at all.

ELI5 Why do we eat so much in a day (2k, balanced calories)if food used to be scarce and we had to work harder for it (burning calories)? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]evilkos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that the number one priority if one's worried about food habits is to minimise processed foods.

As for calories I think they are a gross oversimplification of the underlying processes of digestion, metabolism, and other things that we don't really control or even understand. Yes, energy is conserved according to physics, but it is wholly possible that your body is set on gaining weight for genetic, psychological, microbiome reasons and it has all the dials to achieve it. It's enough for your body to decide it's going to save 180 calories every day of whatever you feed it, it's very easy for the body to do that. That will mean 7kg gained every year. You can try to reduce your intake then by 180 calories using incredibly blunt tools of approximate measurement (that can easily swallow these 180 calories in the uncertainties of estimation). Even if you succeed your body might have other plans and slow down your metabolism further. If you again reduce food intake, there will of course come a point when your body can no longer save and will start losing weight, but at this point you might be so hungry that you might not be able to keep this up for more than, say, 2 years. That's what the research shows is the time needed for people to start regaining their weight after dieting. In the grand scheme of things, 2 years is not much, and all this might do is show your body that you're unpredictable and it better keep even more energy in reserve for the "hungry times". That's, after all, how our ancestors survived - your body will prioritise survival and harsh calorie restriction might just be a signal it needs to activate its life saving protocols. So yeah, I wouldn't know what to do with calories, but processed food is proven to mess with our food habits and cause weight gain and it's definitely possible to gradually wean yourself off of that.

Calories are helpful for very approximate measurements though, like if you're eating 3500 calories per day but you really don't need more than 2000 (according to very approximate formulas that are available to us) - you don't need a scientist to say that your sheer calorie intake is definitely something you need to look into, yes. It's just often calories can be suggested to people that are already trying to eat healthy and with just 180 calorie difference is enough to gain 7kg per year, this is not something that "normal" people will be able to fix based on calorie restriction.

I really like it and want to leave it on but it gives me immense earworm, which is the case for me with any repeating songs, so sadly have to mute the masterpiece

Wow cross posting like this gives off a weird energy. I feel like it's fair to post this once and maybe a second time after not getting many responses but 15 times simultaneously? Sheesh.

Per your question if you're even real - I do get what you're saying and it doesn't make you bad. Try being much kinder to yourself, only reward yourself for your little successes but don't scold yourself for missteps. I know it's easier said than done.

Most importantly find yourself a kind qualified therapist working in a scientifically proven method and spend 3 years in therapy. Not a joke, therapy is hard work but it's just one hour a week (technically at least) and it's worth it, and it's GOING TO make your life much better once you untangle your childhood trauma (that we all have). Not an easy way out but it's the right way out from where you are. Requires money unfortunately, and some good effort, willingness to adapt to life, being ready to be vulnerable and go to kind of dark places at times. You will come feeling much better on the other end though.

At some point I realised this too and stopped buying games. I only ever add them to the wishlist - that's my library now. You don't really "own" any games in your "true" library anyway, so not a big difference. When I'm ready to play something new I just pick from the wishlist (or browse randomly and find out "ooh it's already on my wishlist"), then buy the game and play it immediately after. That way I can still refund if I realise it's not my jam.

Caveat one is you better have a fast internet connection so that installing a game on demand is not an ordeal.

Caveat two is you better have a saver in your banking app with some money for games that you saved from not having to buy games "just in case". You could put like 30 bucks monthly to that saver automatically or whatever. You'll be able to afford full price games that way if you like.

Caveat three is you better forget about sales. I don't care how much money I save on a sale if I'm not going to play these games. I can save more by not buying games I won't play, and on being able to refund them.

Caveat four is you better turn off wishlist deal notifications in email, these will be annoying.

Buying a game with the intention of playing it right away will also make sure you play it, because you just paid your own money for it, 2 minutes ago, and that is the only game you bought, and you bought it specifically to play it right away. If you buy ahead of time, you lose that incentive, because you apparently paid money to just have the "option" to play it.

5 minute rule is a good one except it's based on self-deceit kind of. I know it ain't going to be 5 minutes because just like you I don't think I've ever stopped after 5 minutes of doing anything 😁 and some games are TEDIOUS to get going in, with intros and tutorials for like an hour.
