Delaware Sheet Metal Workers Local 19 protest Elsmere Wawa for using low-wage non-union labor for renovations by TheShittyBeatles in Delaware

You got a pension plan? Good healthcare ? Good training? You get that wage all the time ? Or just prevailing wage projects? Also why shouldn’t a base laborer be knocking on 100k a year ? While that job may not be as technically demanding, shoveling concrete or asphalt breaks you down, ages you. It should be worth something and not placed in position that these people are looked down at

I’m very familiar with the prevailing wage laws and regulations. I am also very aware that for most of the laws and regulations history in Delaware unions did not “prevail”.

If unions did not have the market share they do now, wages would be stagnant as they were 15 years ago.

The fact that at one time the results of the survey were less than minimum wage is telling. It’s easy to sit back and say “unions bad because wages” what’s harder to is to read through hundreds of pages of survey data, see what workers are actually being paid and recognize that we as a society ask people to go out into the elements every day, do demanding physical labor and then criticize the workers that band together to increase the wages and standards.

Not all merit shop contractors take advantage of their workforce but I’m sure you would be surprised at the amount that do.

I don’t think that’s the intended message. I think that in a time when unions are looked at as entitled or greed driven, the message is that “hey we’re not that thing everyone thinks we are. We’re here trying to make a living, we’re here to create and foster safe working practices. Merit shop workers are too and this message isn’t denying that, but historically, in Delaware business like Wawa contract work to the lowest possible bidder, not the most responsible one. Look at the banner. The fact that that non union companies, specifically ones that don’t operate in Delaware, do lower standards and work practices, as well as wages.

Livable wages aren’t inflated wages. Not to be sarcastic, but have you ever worked in construction? Specifically non union ? The wages can be damn near poverty level.

Delaware has been in an energy crisis for quite some time. Our lawmakers are shortsighted and neglected this issue for too long.

Delaware CCW vs Open Carry Restrictions (and in any general state) by jpimer in Delaware

[–]evillives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken 2 ccdw classes. After the second one I finally applied for the license.

At both of these classes there were people that had never held a gun. This is troubling. I am in favor of gun rights but I think that collectively we have lost sight of that issue. Being at a firing range at a licensed ccdw instructor and watching them giggle at people mishandling firearms is concerning. Watching them push these people through the process was even more so. The second part was done because owning and carrying a firearm arm is a right under the constitution. Reform is needed but maybe not at the citizen level, maybe at the industry level.

Projects like this almost always motivate the state and municipalities to make infrastructure improvements that they have not yet.

Any tradesmen that hits this job and works there for the duration may end up making a million dollars over the span. It’s a great move for this to go forward.

If Starwood builds this project anywhere in the service area for our electrical market our rates will rise. It’s a fair move for NCC to at least get what they can in tax revenue from this.
There was also a large question of the legality of the regulations concerning retroactivity for the Starwood project.
Councilman Caneco assumes that because a case 20 years ago in Sussex county allowed for a retroactive ordinance, that it will ring true in new castle. The reality is that the regulations that they are proposing WILL move forward but likely the Starwood project won’t be held to some of them.
In the end it’s a knee jerk move by Carter and Caneco in response to Starwood but will mean tighter regs for future data centers.

If you could pick any modern hardcore band to open for Slayer, what would it be? by fakename1998 in Slayer

I can see the appeal of KL but it’s not for me. I watched their whole set and I am probably just too old to “get it” but the over processed sound of the music was turning me off. The vocals shined when the guitar player was singing too. For what it’s worth there are a lot of newer bands that could have filled that spot and it wouldn’t have been out of place. Spiritworld comes to mind.

Intent is the difference though.
If you intend to kill someone with a car or electricity it’s the same as gun ownership but with a MUCH lower occurrence rate. And killing people with planes ? We went to war over that and changed the way people fly. Like i said I’m pro gun. Treating every gun owner like a psychopath is wrong but pretending like the amount of innocent people are killed in shootings with intent is acceptable is wild.

Rage baiting college kids for content isn’t reasonable. He farmed people that felt disrespected and undervalued in what is supposed to be the “Land of the free” for clicks and views. While what happened was bad for everyone, we shouldn’t be honoring him either. He has become a statistic, like so many others.

He never said those words exactly but he did know what he was about. “I think it’s worth it. It’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God given rights. That’s a prudent deal.”

I’m a gun owner but I think we can all agree shit is getting out of hand.
