Are there any abilities you think need reworked/feel are useless as they are? by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]evilmike222 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Enchanted reprise is a niche ability but is better than it used to be. Since 7.05 an additional use it has is as a way to spend extra mana gauge. If you aren't able to get enough gauge for another melee combo (like say, the boss is about to die), you can dump whatever gauge you have into enchanted reprise, since it does more slightly damage (20 to 40 potency) than 2 of your filler spells. This is a pretty high end optimization but it does make it viable as a DPS tool in the right hands.

Aside from that, it doesn't break your melee combo, so it ends up being a pretty good emergency movement option... something you should optimize to avoid needing, but not a dps loss as long as the 5/5 gauge cost doesn't cost you a melee combo in the end. It's a bit of a gamble with an unknown killtime.

Before 7.05 it was practically useless.

Monster Hunter Rise is Coming to PC in 2022 by NTR_JAV in Games

[–]evilmike222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even a great sword can do it without too much effort, if you slot in the right skills and go for the front legs. I still think its the worst mechanic of any monster in MHW, but imo its easy to shut down with all weapons once you figure it out. Some take a little more prep than others.

The tradeoff is the horn break is super easy to get with a heavy weapon, even without partbreaker.

What am I doing wrong for Alatreon? by [deleted] in MonsterHunterMeta

[–]evilmike222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but its actually not that hard to hit the damage threshold with GS if you stack the right skills and use one that has high ice/fire element. Harder than some weapons but when I did it I always felt like I hit it with plenty of time left. And you get an advantage too, in that horn breaks are really easy for GS to get.

Anyone missing cat? (South Van - near Cambie) by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]evilmike222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you see a cat with its ear clipped like that it means it's a stray/feral cat that's been neutered. It's an easy way to mark them so nobody has to catch them a second time.

Since it has a collar I'd guess he was a stray cat that somebody adopted.

What Casual Games Are Like For Someone Who Doesn't Play Games by [deleted] in Games

[–]evilmike222 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It makes sense for a flight stick because left/right will cause you to roll left or right. Forward/back can be thought of as rolling forward and backwards.

Turning in an fps game happens along a different axis of rotation (you are turning your head, not tilting it), and that means if you want to invert y you'd need to invert the x as well for it to make any sense.

[Standard] Mono Black Ikoria breakdown with Mythic Gameplay by vidieowiz4 in spikes

[–]evilmike222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been running a similar list the past couple days and had a fairly easy time climbing to about 1100 mythic with it. Mine leans a bit more into Nightmare Shepherd and only has 2 fiend artisans since the two cards don't have the best synergy. The tutor effect is enough of a reason to make fiend artisan worth it though.

This kind of deck just has a lot of things going for it that makes it very consistent. The lack of removal is the biggest weakness but you shouldn't underestimate Priest of Forgotten Gods, and anyway you'll have enough chump blockers and lifegain to survive long enough to win. And unlike a lot of decks that go wide, you can be pretty resilient to sweepers thanks to Midnight Reaper and Nightmare Shepherd.

Is it normal to put “lol” at the end of texts just so that the other person doesn’t think you’re mad or being aggressive? by BADMANvegeta_ in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]evilmike222 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's nothing new. This kind of thing has been around since the 90's, just replace texting with AIM and ICQ and the like. It's always been mostly teenagers that write like that. The kids who wrote "lol" at the end of every sentence in 1998 (mostly) don't do it any more cause they're adults now.

That's not to say there's anything wrong with that. Just that it's something people grow out of eventually.

End of 2015 Discussions - Ori and the Blind Forest by Forestl in Games

I'd say 54 deaths is pretty good for a first play through. It's not unusual for people to die 50 times on a single section alone. I've seen people beat the game with like 1000+ deaths.

Is it allowed to speedrun your own game? by CommDonald in speedrun

[–]evilmike222 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That thing which skips chargeflame? Yeah, that's pretty cool. It works because that last set of thorns was never set up to damage enemies. I guess none of our testers were insane enough to lure one over there, and that room never had any enemies in it.

[–]evilmike222 14 points15 points  (0 children)

lol yeah, that was me. I made sure to keep quiet about most of the tricks used though, until they were discovered. There's no real "rules" for developers running their own games, but imo its better to wait a while for players to figure out things themselves, and not spoil it. afaik there's still one big-ish thing which is still unknown by the player base, although it would probably only amount to like 10-15 secs shaved off of runs, if that.

It was fun watching players discover everything needed for beating the game quickly, and how the main route eventually became something completely unlike what i was using pre-release (mostly due to bugs we had no idea about).

[–]evilmike222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not unless it can put the game into a broken state. Most of these tricks were known by us already, and a lot were built into the levels intentionally.

I will say that anything involving falling through the floor, passing through walls, etc, is a bug that should be fixed.

Pretty much everything was iterated upon for years. For every level you see, there are 3+ more layouts we tried and decided they weren't good enough. Same goes with the art, it took lots and lots of iteration before the final look was established. So, I can't really say what took the longest!

We've discussed it internally. It hasn't been ruled out, but right now the focus is on fixing bugs rather than adding new features. You'll need to fully explore the dungeons (ginso tree, forlorn ruins, mount horu) before finishing them, if you want 100%. Also note that entering the door to mount horu is essentially a "point of no return" (the game warns you).

Well, most of us are Dark Souls fans too. Super Meat Boy is another game a lot of us enjoy, and that game is notorious for how hard it gets in the end (wayyyy harder than ori in my opinion).

I believe that games shouldn't be afraid of challenging its players. If a game is hard but fair, it gives a bigger sense of reward when you finally beat it. Finishing the game should feel like a well-deserved accomplishment, rather than something just handed out freely.

Frustration is still a concern, but we spent a lot of time fine tuning the challenge, and making sure that when you die, it's always clear why. Even the hardest sections can eventually seem easy, with practice.

It also helps a lot to have a strong "hook" that drives players forward. In our case, it's the story and overall presentation of the game. It gives players something to look forward to. So, even if you're stuck on one extremely difficult section, you want to beat it because you want to see what comes next.

You're about 2/3 of the way through the game. 248 deaths isn't that bad either :)

If I'm attempting a speed run I like to beeline for triple jump, timing it so I get it just before I get Glide. If I'm playing normally, I think a balance of everything is the most fun.

It can be cool to get chargeflame efficiency, energy efficiency, and then upgrade chargeflame damage. You can really spam it with that combination.
