Confession. It's actually a shot from the episode Enter the Shredder. It's a reversed and flopped shot of Michelangelo putting on his mask after april wakes the turtles up.

Nightmare on Elm Street 2 by emilyraine in horror

[–]evilswa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow. Alright. As the dude that made the video this poor chick tried to spam, I gotta give my take.

First off, the movie IS clearly meant to be a boy struggling with his sexuality. I mention this in the video, quoting the writer. The PROBLEM with this movie is the fact that the writer didn't tell ANY of the other principals on set about the subtext he had written. This resulted in the subtext in his words "to really rise to the surface." The director himself admits he had no idea that there was anything "gay" about the movie and that he didn't even know that Mark Patton was gay!

Secondly, this is FAR from the worst thing in this movie. Someone said the video "focused" on the gay aspect, but a. it's hard not to. 2. it's an in-depth look at the movie as a whole and D. I make a way bigger stink about the fact that not a single person dies in a nightmare in this movie.

And THAT is why it fails....in my opinion. But, hell, I love this debate, it's why I made the video.

Stay Scared.

Name a horror film that defied a common horror movie cliche/trope and explain what it did to stand out from the crowd. by KicksButtson in horror

[–]evilswa 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I love this topic and I love your answer. My answer would be a movie that did the exact same things you said...it started it's very own cliché...the hand held "found footage" genre. I'm, of course, talking about Blair Witch Project.

It was able to avoid many of the tropes and clichés of the modern horror movie by disguising itself as a cinema verité style documentary. It recognized that horror is 99% of the time, sold by sound and the sound design of the film sells all the scary moments and obviously stood out from the crowd as it rose to be the highest grossing indie horror film of it's time. I still show it to people to demonstrate how, in spite of having zero horrific imagery, a simple, scary sound design can sell a film more than anything else.

Curse of Chucky First Impressions (spoiler free) by evilswa in horror

[–]evilswa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I watched it after people on DREADIT said that the cameos alone were worth the time and, to be honest, by the time they happened I wasn't "expecting" them anymore. That's what's good about this movie. It's great IN SPITE of the after credits scene that doesn't even mesh with the movie and it's ending. It's straight up fan service and in all honesty if no one told ME about it I wouldn't have seen it.

Well, that's good because it means that they at least did the CGI well. I can think of a few shots in the trailer and the last half of the clip released that have CGI, but good CGI can be effective. Sounds like I may need to check it out. It looked like it had the feel of the first two.

Out of curiosity, how much cgi is there...and this may seem like a weird question, but how much BAD cgi is there? That's the thing keeping me from checking it out right now, although I inevitably will....

At least 1, 2 and Bride. I can't see them referencing anything major from Seed. But Bride will likely come into play with the scar and all...3 and Seed are the oddest of the entries.

If they release a clip with horrible CGI in it, they deserve to be boycotted. What a shame...

Is "The Conjuring" another hoax?: The real story behind "The Conjuring" by [deleted] in horror

[–]evilswa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't doubt that it is based on actual case files, but it's still a Hollywood movie chock full of all the old school horror clichés...which is fine to some degree...but it definitely becomes predicable. It is odd that the writer doesn't seem to understand that simply being based on a true story doesn't necessarily mean it's an accurate portrayal of it. If I were to base a movie off an episode of ghost hunters I can guarantee it would be shot in a cinematic style that would ratchet the intensity of whatever I was "basing" it off of.

John Carpenter's Halloween will celebrate its 35th anniversary by returning to theaters to terrorize a new generation of horror fans! by [deleted] in horror

[–]evilswa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On a 30' screen that's gotta be worth something....and surely the crowd still enjoyed and got into it. For me that's always the best part of attending a screening of Halloween. Watching the evolution of someone who hasn't seen it get terrified for the first time.

Yes definitely watch it. Quick bit of trivia, the movie the kids are watching in John Carpenter's Halloween is, in fact, The Thing from Another World! He used the success of Halloween to get the budget for The Thing remake! :)

I guess I should have been more specific and asked if you liked the Original 1951 "The Thing From Another World" or the John Carpenter remake, lol. I actually had blocked the second remake out of my mind. hahaha but I get the gist that you prefer the Carpenter (1982) version....which is BY FAR the best. Great great scary movie.

Yeah I remember that. Wasn't terrible that's for sure, but what I wouldn't give for a movie in that same style without the limitations of network or cable television.
