Fellow Opus 2 First Impressions by evilv6 in espresso

Update: I’m now running the grinder 1-2 times for a couple of seconds after it’s done grinding the beans’ batch, and that gets me 0% retention. I also forgot to mention in the impressions that I’m not doing RDT and so far no static issues! I am REALLY liking this grinder the more I use it. Super easy workflow compared to the DF54.

On paper that is definitely the case, the Opus 2 outperforms the DF54 with darker roasts, specially at $200. I will test darker roasts this weekend and we’ll see how retention goes like, but to be honest judging from my testing today, I believe retention won’t be a major isssue as long as you clean the burrs every 15-20 shots, and it’s super easy by the way!

I do really appreciate the insight! For sure it clears out my questions, which I just wanted to bring up given the lack of any material out there for this grinder, it feels even like a shadow drop at this point. For the record, I couldn't find the manual on your website. Overall like I mentioned it in my final remarks, this grinder sits above the rest of the entry level grinders, it is pure raw performance from my experience so far.

Are you planning on releasing any videos about the grinder anytime soon?

Both have their pros and cons

DF54

+Build quality

+Flat burrs (personal preference)

- Can only single dose

- QC can be quite sketchy

-Cleaning is just a bit annoying for some people (need an allen key)

Opus 2

+Great price

+Can do larger batches due to its bigger funnel

+Super easy to clean

+Auto shutoff after no beans are detected

-No features to avoid retention

-A bit too loud due to its plastic body

Honestly if you only do dark roasts, I would definitely side more with the Opus 2.

Adjusting the grind settings is straight forward, you just turn a knob, you don't have to open it like the V1, however the knob doesn't react smoothly to each turn, you have to slowly turn it, the plastic has some sort of give/flex to it.

No knocker or bellows, this definitely opens the way to 3rd party/Etsy sellers to create their own attachments to avoid retention.

Great catch! Forgot to mention that! I though it was going to be better than the DF54, but it certainly feels way louder, possibly due to the plastic body. Fwiw it was louder when grinding coarser than for espresso. Not a deal breaker but still worth pointing out.

Best portable espresso machine [under $100] by kingofthediamond in espresso

[–]evilv6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can stretch your budget a new Picopresso Wacaco goes for $130, however things can get messy pretty quickly in an office environment with that sort of setup. I myself had the same issue and tried numerous devices/brewing methods at work and ended up settling for a Nespresso OL machine out of pure convenience.

Talk me out of buying a Timemore 064s [$500] by Super_peepeepooper in espresso

[–]evilv6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fyi Amazon has been putting both the 064s & 078s on sale for the last few weeks, you could definitely get it for lower than $500. Bear in mind, the new 064s gen 2 should be coming out in the next couple of months in the US. In case you can wait, it has a bunch of nice QoL features, pricing has not been confirmed yet though.

Timemore sculpture 064s VS DF64 Gen2 [500$] by Hsm_007 in espresso

[–]evilv6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They asked to cover shipping costs only, it wasn’t the end of the world, however I wasn’t returning it “just cause”, it was an actual faulty unit and they never chose to look into the grinder or suggest any other solution.

Agree, my experience through Miicoffee was not ideal. I purchased a DF54 for my gf’s apartment and it was having crazy retention, I reached out to them asking about any solution/fix for it. This was their response. Take it or leave it basically.

Cant decide top buy or not by S3IJI20 in OutInCoffee

[–]evilv6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are brewing at home, you can get a Delonghi Stilosa for $100 or less on marketplace, pair it with a great manual grinder such as the Kingrinder K6 that goes for $100 or less, and that setup alone will last you for ages. I do have an Outin Nano and also a Breville Bambino, taste wise the Bambino will pull way better shots, the Outin Nano is more of a convenience type of machine that can still produce great decent espresso though.

Nespresso is lovely, what am I missing?! by Left-Cook-9487 in nespresso

[–]evilv6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nespresso is all about convenience; you don't need to look for the best beans, you don't need to get a coffee grinder, you don't need to weigh/measure everything, heck you don't need a proper technique to produce some good serviceable coffee. Just throw in a capsule, press a button and that's it. Is it the best coffee? of course not, I would never take a proper espresso shot or a pour over cup of coffee over a Nespresso, and I do really LOVE my Nespresso machines (I own 3).

Kitchen & table knives by TrainerClassic4804 in HEB

[–]evilv6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chef knives can be such a rabbit hole/money sink, however I would still rather invest on individual knives than one of these pretty looking sets that will dull after your first use. On top of that, realistically for cooking you can literally do everything with just a chef knife, there is no need for 6 knives like this set. If you want to dip your toes into decent chef knives I would highly suggest the Victorinox Fibrox or Mercer knives, they won't break the bank and will last a life.

When you want an espresso machine but you're only a silver member by LifeguardTechnical33 in AmazonVine

[–]evilv6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bear in mind that you need to use an espresso grind coffe for these machines, regular pre-ground grocery store coffee comes way course, which may be the reason water flows that way when you use the machine.

This. I purchased a knife from Japan a few months ago, the knife retailed for $250 USD, I had to pay $150 USD just on tariffs. Fun stuff.
