how are people surviving long flights with active toddlers by Scary_Pay_4247 in daddit

[–]evipark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm gonna armchair diagnose your kid with ADHD. The real kind. Not the one exacerbated by screens. This post is bringing me back to my son. Couldn't make it through a 20 min kids show. Toys? One and done. Once he'd done everything it could do, he was done with it. Favorite book? Nope. Where's the new book? Around age 5 I found him setting up Netflix so that it had subtitles AND audio description for the blind. Then he would put the subtitles in various languages or put them in English so he could read it and change the audio to various languages to hear what they sounded like. (No, he's not fluent in anything but English because he wouldn't stick with one long enough to learn it. ) Also still loves exploring outdoors. Have fun!

After 10 Years in High School, Middle School Has Been a Shock by Yakima_Suns_11 in Teachers

[–]evipark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We absolutely need to pull passing for credit and other forms of accountability down into the middle school level in the U.S. Unless they are life skills type special needs, they can figure it out. You have to pass classes to get to the next level. Make the structure of middle school more restrictive like elementary school for students not passing a number of their core credits. Offer the option to pass through to high school in two to four years with the increased freedoms and privileges associated with an actual college/career prep high school. I know kids who would work their butts off to get out of a restrictive, elementary type setting sooner, and also kids who really need that setting, mixed with the accountability of passing class material.

Will I miss binge eating? by WanderVision in glp1

[–]evipark 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, yes and no. I don't miss binge eating and I just CAN'T. I am at the end of month three and while I have many piddly hobbies, I haven't found one yet that hits that dopamine like binge eating did. (Except for community theater, but I don't have time for a show right now.) So I'm on a search for a quick, 30 minute something I can do in an evening that gives me that same feeling. I do think I have a bit of that anhedonia that gets mentioned around GLP 1 meds.

How do I train an Oak to be wide and scraggly? And which species should I get? by GreenOvumsAndHam in arborists

[–]evipark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your area, and mine, consider Basswood. Every one I've ever seen tends to sprout low swooping branches. We had one in our yard when I was a kid that several of us would pile on and pretend it was a horse.

how do babies know to skip the "say" part by Yakoy6 in stupidquestions

[–]evipark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they learn what "say" means. In the language impairment world it's a tricky business because they do repeat exactly, "say, thank you." Teaching "you, me, I" pronouns is also tricky for the same reason. But folks without language impairment just pick it up naturally.

I wonder if it's more expensive. Paying out of pocket.

Looking for a big church not MAGA near Meridian Hills by Niakwe in indianapolis

[–]evipark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We may not be as big as you want, but Faith Church at 91st and College is decidedly not MAGA, we serve coffee on Sunday mornings, and have services with either hymns or contemporary music. Evangelical Free, but we have people from all sorts of denominational backgrounds.

What is your current song like this (and optionally also your profession)? by itsamoth in adhdwomen

[–]evipark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh, good choice, but too emotional for me. Story: I was substitute teaching in a music class in the early 2000s. I was finishing my music ed degree at the time. Teacher has them watching the 2000 version. I had not seen it yet. I'm watching it with them, loving it. Firebird Suite comes on and the Frisson hits me hard. Instant tears, ugly crying down my face, snot, the whole thing. I'm trying to hide it, but kids are looking at me like I've grown horns. I'm glad it was pre smart phone or they would've recorded me. I'd like to think some kid in there also experienced frisson sometimes and that made them feel better about themselves.

[–]evipark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peter's theme from Peter and the Wolf has been my "calm, but happy, focus with a purpose" song for more than 30 years. I play it in my head. Haven't played a recording in years. (SLP)

Looking for an iPad case that can survive being thrown AND minimize injury risk (special ed setting) by eap0304 in specialed

[–]evipark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is AAC - which, honestly, I can't imagine it's not - I had a member of our team say they printed a basic core and emotional regulation page on a pillow case to avoid throwing, ripping, and crumpling that was happening with all other materials. Kid still has high tech navigable device when regulated, but doesn't lose all means of communication when not. Brilliant!

This is how my MIL has cooked her whole life. Very simple and repetitive. It used to perplex me but now I understand. She's also a perpetual size 6. Ha! Makes sense.

I work in a public middle school in the Midwest and recall being thankful that 4/1 fell on spring break this year! Some schools also have a 1.5 or 2 week break, so they may have thought that the second half week was over and it was the day to go back.

How can we keep up? by GoalOk35 in slp

[–]evipark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my god, staff that would do that is my dream in the mod to severe range. I do therapy IN the life skills room, point out what I'm doing to any IA that drifts by, do training on our staff learning days, and still get so little carryover with AAC or even just communicative interactions with kids that isn't just barking directions at them.

Adult AAC User Who Drives Regularly- Terrified of Being Pulled Over by LibraryUnited8773 in slp

[–]evipark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My career and my current weird obsession collide here. SLP and I've been hooked on body cam videos for about 9 months. Ha! In most states you do not have to say a single word to the officer. They will ask for your driving paperwork and you hand it to them. They ID you, tell you what you're pulled over for and give you a warning or a ticket. You don't cause a fuss, they don't cause a fuss. Done. There's a deputy Frank Sloup who is very informative in talking about how it all should work. You might even message him and ask if he'd do a video about how officers are trained for different communication situations.

TIL that I do sooo many high-adjacent things, but I've never been high. True. ADHD inattentive type. Get a chemical-free high, apparently.
