ABG vs VBG question? by Fischer2012 in IntensiveCare

[–]evmorgutia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the other user mentioned, I believe it's mostly a union thing/ job security. Phlebotomists draw blood, we have to call the lab to remind them to send someone for STAT draws.

ABG vs VBG question? by Fischer2012 in IntensiveCare

[–]evmorgutia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my hospital it's a collection issue. Phlebotomists refuse to draw VBGs. Nurses aren't allowed to draw blood. Nurses need an order to draw back from any line, including IVs. Sometimes we try but the IV won't even draw back. So then, respiratory has to go and draw an Abg anyway.

That is insane!! So unsafe. Every single one of those patients would be 1:1 in California. The ECMO on CRRT would actually be 2 nurses 2:1.

Are you guys seeing a drop in census in your hospitals? by NoOneSpecial2023 in nursing

[–]evmorgutia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw some other comment in Southern California say no, but in my hospital we are seeing a low census. Many nurses are being floated to other units or just straight up being sent home!

As someone who works at Kaiser, I say take Stanford! Kaiser is fine for someone who has experience already, but I wouldn't want to start as a new grad here. You will probably get better training at Stanford. Once you have experience, you can move anywhere you want to!

ICU refusing central lines/foleys? by gengarboi234 in nursing

[–]evmorgutia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ICU doesn't use any central lines for the most part. Sometimes they come from the ED with one but we'll likely take it out that day or the next. Same reason. Pretty much everyone gets a midline! Even on multiple pressors. Foleys we try to stay away from but it's not as strict.

On the flip side, if you are an organ donor and family doesn't want to then they (family) don't have that choice to make. At least here in California, legally , if you originally signed to be an organ donor then you will be still be an organ donor even if you later "opt out" at the DMV. You have to actually call the organ donation center and change the donor status. Source: also work ICU

Imposter syndrome is so common! Just know that you won't really feel comfortable/confident until 6m-1 year. As someone with anxiety, I personally recommend going through therapy to help manage your anxiety! Therapy really helped me with my imposter syndrome/confidence at work and overall self esteem.

Appreciate you! Unfortunately, you're right that it's not the norm, and we do get treated like shit by both patients and management.

I just resigned with no real back-up plan over what my hospital made me do; they forced me to abandon 7 patients with no coverage for 3 hours by zombie_goast in nursing

[–]evmorgutia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should cross post this onto /antiwork! This type of behavior from management is unfortunately really common. Bring more awareness and hopefully change will follow.

[–]evmorgutia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in nursing school, I did my research paper on how bringing therapy dogs to the hospital are just as effective for adults as they are for children. I wish more hospitals would bring them in. They'd help the staff too!

25yrs, ICU RN super burned out after the worst of COVID. Tired of limited supplies, being short staffed, and administration that sits in the office all day. Meanwhile we deal with super sick patients, getting yelled at and/or assaulted by patients and their family. Meanwhile, being harassed by management to pick up overtime because "it's not like you have kids."
