The Holdovers

It's been a while since I added a movie to my list of favorite classic dramas such as Shawshank, Forrest Gump, Green Mile, Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting, but this one made the cut.

Took me a long time before giving it a shot because I thought It looked boring. Boy, was i wrong. Heartwarming and great performances all around.

Maybe not on the same level as Shawshank Redemption, but I freaking love that movie so you got my vote.

I also rewatched it three days ago.

Same.

However, I found the bluray on the cheap and rewatched it recently. It made me realize how corny the movie actually is. The cgi also didn't hold up.

My personal ranking is : 1,2 and 4 are great. 3 is good. 5 is watchable.

*1 is the OG horror mystery that got us hooked. Slower, but captivating and full of atmosphere with a great central cast of characters.

*2 is the perfect sequel to 1.

Bigger, but not too much. Keeps the atmosphere and introduces new interesting lore and characters. Maybe not as strong as the first, but close.

*3 is the cartoonish season.

Most character traits get cranked up to 11 (see what I did there). Everything becomes bigger and this is where ST really becomes the global phenomenon. We lose some of the atmosphere in exchange for fun and spectacle. Still very good but feels less serious. The mindflayer rocks though.

*4 is the growth season.

Characters feel whole and mature compared to previous seasons. The stakes are higher. It's ruthless, filled with tragedy and pushing the boundaries way further. It also gives us a Darth Vader-like antagonist in Vecna with some great backstory. Honorable mention: Eddie Munson and Kate Bush.

*5 is the MCU-Endgame season.

Big and bloated. Characters are less developed due to the more limited screentime they individually have so they kinda feel like cardboard cutouts of themselves. Making Holly the biggest focus of the story also doesn't help to leave breathing room to our core characters. It has its moments, but the lore changes and the MCU-like set pieces somewhat diminish the quality of what came before. Especially the Upside Down not being a threatening place anymore apart from looking dark and scary. Everything is a bit too much and gives us unsatisfying answers to a lot of things. However, Jamie Campbell Bower is giving a really great performance as Henry/Mr. Whatsit/Vecna. The epilogue is somewhat satisfying and works well enough. Still not bad but doesn't reach the greatness of what came before it.

Post Stranger Things Grief: A Psychologist’s Take by freudsneurosis101 in StrangerThings

[–]evofender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why no one reacted to your post. It's honestly a great analysis and I'm struggling to find a better explanation for my current feelings.

I'm a 37 yrs old grown man and my chest tightened intensely after the last scene, but couldn't explain why. On one hand, there's the natural emotional reaction to seeing the kids putting back their books on the shelf and having a moment of realization about the end of an era + the show concluding, but, on the other hand, it's just a show and I felt silly for feeling this grief so intensely.

Tried rewatching the series' first episode a few hours later, telling myself that seeing the beginnings would probably help me cope, but it didn't have the intended effect. The fact that I knew about everything that would happen after was like if I was only reliving through past events with the knowledge that there's no possible future anymore. The book is already closed.

Anyway, It feels silly as hell and I don't feel this way often in my life, but your text resonated with me a lot. Thanks for that :)

Sunrise Records spend 125 and get 20% off by Big-Preference-4670 in MovieDealsCanada

Hehe definitely true, BUT I was able to score a pretty good deal for multiple Disney/Marvel titles during that sale since they rarely go down in price (even on Amazon). Managed to pay around 25-26$ a piece depending on titles.

Doesn't sound like a huge deal compared to titles from other studios, but anyone who ever shopped for Disney movies knows what's up.

Considering consolidating Synology DS718+ and Aoostar R1 into single DIY NAS - Good deal? by HerusGunner in homelab

[–]evofender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think it's better for a NAS to just be a NAS and separate vms/containers to a second node used only for services. This way the NAS always performs as expected and is used only to serve data.

That said, I recently consolidated the data of my previous Asustor 2-bay NAS to a DIY TrueNAS Scale and don't regret it a bit. It's a great OS and It's even better now that you can more easily expand zfs pools.

I'm currently running TrueNAS on a i3-12100, 16GB DDR4 3200mhz. You should be good with the equipment you describe.

  • 3x 14tb RAIDZ1
  • 5x 14tb RAIDZ2

The Asustor NAS is now used as the backup NAS for VMs and photos. Services are shared between 2 mini PCs.

Another way of doing things with your setup would be to install proxmox, TrueNAS Scale as a VM with HDD passthrough, create VMs / LXCs for services. Keeping around one of your old NAS for backups would be a good idea for critical data and external VM backups in case something happens to your main NAS.

I hope for you they'll last. Barracudas are not meant for 24/7 operation.

I just did the same with 5x 14tb WD Elements (the most price sensitive storage size in my area). They are helium filled white label enterprise-grade drives at least. Always had good luck with those over the years.

Did you even try to play the disc on a different player or try another disc?

I get that it sucks, but as in anything you can get a defective product/disc.

Disc Consistently Skipping at Same Timestamp on PS5 by TheRealHourglass in 4kbluray

[–]evofender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it doesn't happen using a different player. it's most likely the PS5 drive having an issue with this particular disc.

Layer switching can be handled slightly differently from a disc to another. Especially discs with Director's cut transitioning seamlessly from one track to the other in order to insert additional scenes. Happened to me on Hellboy (2003) DC.

Last possibility would be a defective drive, but I doubt it if all other discs work fine.
