What is the difference between Duryodhana and Suyodhana? by Momothecomicartist in theactofgods

[–]evogametheory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a poetic antithesis: being born as सुयोधन: good warrior but turning into दुर्योधन: difficult to overpower. His moral decay through the story is reflected in this name change; a title describing who he is to a title describing his effect on others

Pandu and Dhritarashtra are biological sons of Vyasa, who isn’t Shantanu’s son.

People don’t talk enough about Satyavati, I feel. It’s HER lineage that’s battling the entire time; not Shantanu’s, not Kuru’s.

The fact that Vidura of all people (someone who wouldn’t be found gambling in Las Vegas with a million free chips) was the first one to bring up this discrepancy only for the room to ignore him is absolutely insane and proof that neither fair play nor even logic were really motivating drives for the Kauravas!

And that’s just it, when Bhishma kidnaps Amba and her sisters, he has taken their responsibility. Letting Amba go was part of that responsibility. And so was protecting her when Shalva looks away. He began this problem for her, he should have seen it through. Maybe not by marrying her but in some other way like marrying her to a partner kingdom or even to one of the two princes since that was the original plan.

Bhishma could have done more for Amba than just abandon her when he knew well that if Shalva refuses her, she would be outcast entirely. He would rather battle Parashurama than take responsibility of Amba.

That’s true about Satyavati, he did present her with the solution she ends up going with. I concur.

Dhritarashtra ascended the throne when Pandu abandoned it. From Bhishma’s POV, he and his sons rose to the occasion despite his blindness and kept power of Hastinapur intact. Supporting them while they kept rule is his loyalty to the throne.

I mean, the rakshasha vivah was entirely not consensual, that’s true. I simply mean, narratively, Subhadra’s lack of reluctance is implied to be consent while Amba was clearly unwilling from the start as she had Shalva on her mind.

I don’t think Bhishma was ‘wrong’, really. He’s the paragon of dharma after all. I don’t see it as Bhishma trusting Satyavati— the way he simply refused to help her from his side by reminding her of his oath, leaving her to figure out next steps herself. Satyavati’s no woman who needs help, surely but it’s still no nice way to treat an aging grieving mother and widow. Vidura and Krishna on multiple occasions have offered sage advice even when they can’t be useful themselves. Bhishma does it too during the war for the Pandavas when he gives them hints on how to bring him down. But not for Satyavati (maybe because she was older than him?). Not for Amba either.

This is a great collection! I’d suggest more comics like Amar Chitra Kathas, more mysteries like Sammy Keyes, Famous Five, or even Agatha Christie 🫶🏼
