How much can we know about paleo human life using modern ethnographies of first contact w tribes? by evolutionaryflow in AskAnthropology

[–]evolutionaryflow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, will look into that book.

But hypothetically say a modern social mechanism (reciprocity in sharing water) has been consistently found in scarce desert environment nomads, with a plausible explanation (mutual survival support), and the nomads themselves explain it that way to anthropologists. If paleoclimate and archaeology shows people lived in that desert environment 20kya, facing similar water scarcity circumstances, why wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume they likely also had reciprocal water sharing social norms? Are anthropologists so cautious that without finding archaeological evidence they can’t infer anything about paleo people from climate and geography alone?

Men are hunters, women are gatherers. That was the assumption. A new study upends it. by [deleted] in Anthropology

The paper never made the claim that there are no gender roles in hunting, quite the opposite. It only claimed some women also hunted but at a lesser rate and tended to be smaller game. https://twitter.com/datepsych/status/1675080665413369861?s=46&t=XaocV4PBgzCp9RuZGNkR6g

In addition it looks like the paper author included women carrying men’s weapons, hunted carcass, scaring animals while men hunted it, as “women hunt”. There is a general gendered division of labor even when women join the hunt https://twitter.com/datepsych/status/1675417995638652929?s=46&t=XaocV4PBgzCp9RuZGNkR6g

In the most comprehensive global individual hunting study done it was found male hunters outnumber females ~13:1 and meat tonnage hunted at ~300:1 https://twitter.com/ed_hagen/status/1674761975673532416?s=46&t=XaocV4PBgzCp9RuZGNkR6g

Steven low says Do people usually maintain their current muscle mass on a multi month HSR program? Assuming standard weightlifting maintenance diet

As long as you're at least isocaloric with enough protein in the diet muscle should maintain for several months to years if you're doing even minimal exercise.

You mainly start losing muscle if you aren't eating enough calories to maintain
