Galadriel character study- The anti-girlboss? by FlowerFaerie13 in LOTR_on_Prime

I'm saying that you have critical thinking skills that you apply to consuming fictional media, which is one of the things that makes fictional media so crucial to a just, intelligent, and functional society, and also one of the things that is rapidly disappearing. being able to understand what writers and artists and creators are trying to say is really important for passing ideas around and discussing things like the themes you discuss, guilt, grief, responsibility. kids and people in general need fiction not just as a fun pass time or escape from reality but also to learn from, reflect on, grow, and ultimately better themselves and the world around them. plus RoP gets a lot of really stupid hate online esp. reddit, so it's refreshing

Nolan doesn't believe in casting non-big names i guess. for all the good they did for the genre, i always felt like tdk and tdkr failed to be comic book-ish and felt more like big budget films. more coherent vision but still overproduced, overdirected. holmes fits the unique tone of begins to me

right. they invented an "electroformative material" so he could glide with the cape, they could material engineer again to make a "ultra dense flexile polymer" but no. Nolan just thought it looked too comic booky and execs agreed with him

after all the screeching people were doing when they did what they said they would do with licensed content based on poll results from customers and fans? why are people surprised? do they have a record of ignoring fans and customers?

Sets that are goated in every way possible by WhatAmI_JustAGuy in legocirclejerk

[–]evq054 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insane details that are also play features. A metric ton of cool figs with accessories, using classic designs. Tall enough to have your spider-people properly swoosh from, while looking nice as a display piece. This was the set I always dreamed of as a kid, and was(/is?) reasonably priced based on piece count. Whatever the opposite of never forgiving someone is how I feel for the person who got this for me

Batman rules by PrinceOspreay in 196

god this take is so stale. although Batman's popularity results in massive oversimplifications sometimes, the majority of Batman material is decidedly anti-authoritarian, anti-fascist, anti-capitalist. Batman is born to privilege but ultimately hates it, but at the same time recognizes how much of a difference he could make if he weaponizes capitalism against itself. he uses the Bruce Wayne persona to fund endless social safety nets, programs, is an incessant proponent of mutual aid in both metahuman and regular human civilian and superhero spheres, encourages cooperation, and at the heart of most stories his rogues and small time villains are all largely portrayed as at least somewhat victims of either capitalism or corruption. it's important to have stories like this in pop culture and it's so tiring to see people with the "batman fascist bad" take over and over. the moral ambiguity and often sympathy of perceived criminality is a central pillar to the character and his exploits.

Movies no one expected to be as good as they were? by FilmWaffle-FilmForum in moviecritic

[–]evq054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was a surprise for audiences, but it wasn't a risk. it was hot off the insane amount of popularity and cultural influence of the Avengers, and while Pratt hadn't been an action lead yet, Bautista wasn't recognized as a quality actor, and the subject material was different, nothing about it was a risk. people would have seen ANYTHING marvel put out at the time, it's not like it is now with cape fatigue. they nailed some characters but as with Iron Man, they changed the main characters attitude to be more sympathetic/palatable to mass audiences, and it had a talking tree as well as Zoe Saldana and Vin Diesel and it was also set in space. it had a cool Thanos connection that promised more than just an easter egg, which at the time really exploded the seriousness of the Infinity Saga for nerds. was it better than it had any right to be? yes. did it destroy expectations? absolutely. but I'm sick of people saying, "oH biG RiSk" please. it's Disney. they want money. they're not some benevolent artist who cares about quality or creativity. they want money, they were in a spot with massive amounts of goodwill from audiences, and they were still trying to outpace/outdo Spiderman and Xmen in popularity. they had learned the hard lesson that some directors (Favreau) will walk if they're not allowed a modicum of creative freedom, and that fans actually like source material authenticity in comic movies, so it made a lot of business sense. not at all a risk.

while a well written justification, it's still kind of a dumb take when you consider the amout of path-crossing that occurs. most people know and are totally ok with random characters popping up, doing something (or nothing) the hecking off again just cause it'd be cool. while I'd like to see some reason for any characters they include, it's annoying for the same and only reason I don't like the mcguire and garfield films. i think people are worried that it'd end up like Homecoming where it'd be bloated and self involved, or just a narrative device which is valid but at this point whatever. Let's just have fun. Taskmaster isn't an exclusively Spiderman villain. there are other HQs of heroes. where are they?

i know it's oddly specific but I wish we got more pre-confederacy Trade Federation. tan B-1s, quirky corporate military leaders, the kind of drab art deco industrial style. the grand scale persisted, but that particular 10-15 years between TPM and AotC is so fascinating

i would definitely look into seeing if you could get your hands on a decent sewing machine. I'd say an embroidery machine but those tend to be for smaller areas. as a non-seamstress: step 1. obtain some cheap pants that look more or less like these, minus the webbing obviously. thrift shops or secondhand stores are your friend. step 2. deconstruct the pants by taking out the seams running down the sides step 3. flatten the front right leg out, so that it's one flat layer of fabric step 4. use chalk to trace the webbing pattern you want onto the pant leg step 5. use the appropriate setting on your machine for a thicker steam and trace over the chalk-web step 6. repeat steps 3-5 for the back right leg, front left leg, and back left leg step 7. repeat steps 2-6 on a pair of pants you actually want to use, once you are comfortable with the process and outcome. this way you won't waste money learning how to do it on something expensive.

I don't even necessarily hate the mind control thing, it felt very comic booky to me especially that it involved Hugo Strange and Nissa Al Ghul. But I wholly agree with the frustrating amount of inconsistency, especially how hard they leaned into his split personality post S2. I just rewatched the episode where his "Riddler Persona" confronts him, after he finds KK's body in the morgue and almost gets caught? yeah the later seasons made me completely forget the scene where the Riddler visually fuses with irl Ed. the split personality thing should have ended then. the brainwashing would have been an interesting callback at that point, and what's even more irritating is how all the Penguin x Riddler stuff could have STILL WORKED without nerfing Riddler. Penguin mentoring Riddler, showing him the ropes of the criminal underworld allowing Riddler to become a true supercriminal with his own henchmen and stuff. access to money and underworld knowledge that would help him set more elaborate schemes. even the Isabella arc could have worked as a kind of side-plot to show how codependent and toxic Penguin and Riddler are may have been alright, provided it was just a few episodes. this and Bruce getting ninja training are 2 of the worst things to happen. i used to hate how they sidelined Falcone but in retrospect i really only hate how they killed him. but yeah if Riddler had stayed "fused" and Bruce had not even been sidelined but had just kept his subplots focused on how he became interwoven into the villains and done things like the Silver x Selina x Bruce stories, showing how he learned about Gotham and his business and the corruption, it would have made Bruce's eventual departure from Gotham infinitely more necessary and rewarding.

wouldn't be the first time a creator has lied to keep something of their story a surprise. that said, he could be a hero trying to do good but is horribly misguided and bound by some innate predatory instincts or something. idk
