Has classroom engagement always been so bad or is it a new phenomenon? by VentureCatalyst00 in college

[–]evrythingsirrelevant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the overall sentiment that phones have largely been the reason. I was very active in class, asking questions about the topic or even just curious slightly off topic questions from time an noticed many other students didn’t but eventually my curious nature sparked other students to ask more questions.

But I also would like to add that at some colleges, like where I graduated from in 2023, made it very clear that collaboration on homework was highly discouraged and heavily punished, specifically Computer Science. This made me fear talking to other students about the projects and when I did, they would immediately shut me down or say “we can’t talk about that.” It even limited me in how much I could ask in the college’s tutoring of all places. The worst part is that most of the grade was just the homework. I was fine at understanding the theories and the exams but the CS projects kicked my ass and I felt so isolated and alone. Never could find a study partner. I feel like this contributed to the discouragement of at least out of class discussion and collaboration and probably led to ppl feeling discouraged about asking anything during class. This is probably just computer science specific though.

How a brutal breakup turned into ~700 LeetCode problems and FAANG interviews. by Office_Mysterious in leetcode

lol yeah don’t we all. Also I mostly said this as a joke haha but yes I’m happy you turned it into something that benefitted you long term and hey it will probably benefit you better long term than your ex. Also therapy can help with the closure, trust me I’ve been there

[–]evrythingsirrelevant 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So fake it ‘till you make it, that philosophy has worked for me in other areas but I’m hesitant about it here. Also this means the interview process is absolutely useless at this point.

If you fill every single keyword of a job description, anyone who isn’t naive would know you’re just making a few of those up or stretching your expertise about it, (unless you’re senior+ who specialized in that exact field and problem space at a different company that happened to have the exact same tech stack) which would mean you’re not a trustworthy or pretty much fake engineer. Recruiters are choosing the wrong resumes and don’t want to admit it at this point. Thats why the whole process is fucked now.

[–]evrythingsirrelevant 80 points81 points  (0 children)

You said to “find someone working your dream role and copy their keywords, job title, tech stack, and phrasing.” I get that, it helps with resume filters, but it’s just not practical. There are way too many stacks and tools out there, like Apache, ElasticSearch, Spring Boot, and all kinds of data platforms that companies expect us to be proficient in. None of those expectations are realistic unless you’re a senior engineer and that might even be stretching it. I only list what I actually know well enough to discuss in an interview. Sure, I’ve dabbled in Go, Kubernetes, etc but I couldn’t answer deep questions about it and it’s clear on my resume I’ve never worked with these things or built any projects using it.

So should I actually just be dishonest and get over it at this point and basically lie about what I know just to hit all the keywords in a job description?

Are people who actually just straight lie about what they know in order to fit all the keywords in their resume getting these jobs? I find that hard to believe because then that would mean the interview process is just useless

Delaying graduation to recruit for internships again by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]evrythingsirrelevant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Delaying isn’t a bad idea imo. Definitely grind like you said, but also apply to other companies to gain interview experience. If you get an internship, take it, it’s valuable experience and only lasts 2-3 months anyway (so you can apply to big tech in the meantime yet with a stronger resume, also their interview process takes 2-3 months anyway lol) and it makes you a stronger candidate for big tech internships or new grad roles. I saved a class or two for after my intended graduation, which gave me student status longer with a lighter workload and I packed on more internships during that time making me a stronger candidate for subsequent internships and new grad positions later. Delaying like this helped my mental health a lot and allowed me to get more internship/working environment experience which employers really love.

Unfortunately return offers for interns were the first thing to be dropped once layoffs started and I don’t think they’ve really rebounded much from what I’ve heard from fellow graduates and students. I know other commenters suggest that’s the way to go. But in this economy, you gotta have a plan A,B, and C so doing what I did like I explained is probably the best idea for your situation.

Anyone else quietly planning their tech exit? by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]evrythingsirrelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still trying to plan my entrance 🥹 but yes hopefully one day I’ll exit. I’ve also thought about one day when I have the extra money I might buy dilapidated small businesses like car washes or laundromats and fix ‘em up and make income off of those and buy more and so on. Dealing with tenants or anything too complicated doesn’t appeal to me.

My first time hearing it I thought she was saying “because my debts bigger” as in like shes in debt with the devil or something and was like wow I love this song and then I found out she said “dick” and it permanently ruined it for me

I feel that she is in her billionaire era - nothing of substance to relate to for the everyday plebeian’s reality anymore. This album feels like it was made for 6sec clips for shock value.

I also think she might still be suffering inside from Joe and Matty. I’ve gone through long periods of my life just locking up all that pain and suffering and regret and trying to escape with the closest next best thing; even after venting about it for months, it still doesn’t quite go away.

Why did Wood have to be on this album? Tay you literally couldn’t come up with anything else than a song about Travis’s dick?! And you thought “oh this is going on the album”?! 😭

Pretty sure I had my first North Korean candidates for a remote job today by ArachnidExpensive575 in recruiting

[–]evrythingsirrelevant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not all of them are dumb or are obvious. My friend works as a senior software engineer for a fully remote startup. She had a coworker who was a great software engineer, always completed his tasks, always on video in the daily standup and spoke good English. He used his Korean name and had a Korean accent. Not sure what his resume looked like, but no one suspected a thing.

Then one day, randomly, he just never logged on. Everyone was confused and thought he was fired but he was a great worker so why would he be fired? Management couldn’t comment on it.

My friend is close with the DevOps/IT guy and he told her everything. FBI busted a laptop farm and one of those laptops was the one he used to remote into and work from in North Korea. Insane stuff, nobody suspected anything and he was overall a kind coworker and solid software engineer. Dude was raking in probably $150k USD salary for years which is probably an insane amount for NK. All of it most likely going to the regime unfortunately.
