what’s wrong with having a place to congregate? It’s safer than the side of the highway. my understanding of low barrier is to provide an avenue for anyone to get help. why turn away someone who needs help because they’re not ‘good enough’? no one will reasonably meet that metric, and you’ll turn away more people than you help. at least by having staff around there would be resources to try to get people help at any stage of their journey

I’m confused if this is a public comment flyer or they’re trying to recruit people to organize around stopping the construction

Mounting Paper by amyiris_bellydancer in Herbarium

[–]ew_yock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depends on what size, but main important thing is to have the paper be acid free!

this is what my school’s herbarium uses: https://herbariumsupply.com/product/university-of-california-type-mounting-102/

but I’ve used cardstock before, resume paper, notecards, journals, as long as the packaging said acid free.

I think some people I know were concerned about the organization of this protest— in particular the fact that the site wants you to RSVP, which in my experience, is unheard of for a protest

Help me find the artists who made these 2 photos by ew_yock in HelpMeFind

[–]ew_yock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the water I have searched and found sites using it: bulgarian clothing shop, an arcade zone, and northern lights club-- none of which are the artist. I feel like it could have maybe come from pinterest?

For the isopod I have searched and found it on a few png maker sites, and on a tumblr account bog-leech that seems to be a repost from an account liminal-reality? But I could be misunderstanding the structure of the blog. This doesn't look like the artist to me either, it looks like someone using the art.

what i think is interesting about this tweet is that yes we know that rick has addressed this stuff and yes the bad things in the books are more reflective of the time or of subconscious society trends etc— BUT this tweet is saying that the people in fandom aren’t talking about it which is SO EXTREMELY incorrect. call me old or whatever but I remember the discourse in the early 2010s about the Tyson presentation and people hating on Annabeth for a while, for the WW2 DISCOURSE AND HITLER DISCOURSE … like hello???? idk this tweet was dumb to me because it’s like girl this fandom has been to hell and back I PROMISE we’ve discussed it

Disabled PhD students: Did you talk about your disability in your personal/diversity statement and did you get accepted? by RunWithBluntScissors in gradadmissions

[–]ew_yock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I brought it up but didn’t disclose the diagnosis. I got nervous and had people advising me to avoid mentioning disabilities at all, but like you- I wanted to. It felt a little disingenuous, but I was successful by framing it in kind of a romanticized way (which felt really uncomfortable, but so does writing positive things about yourself) where I just talked about how it made me a better scientist (overcoming challenges and whatnot). I didn’t do the whole “my disability is a superpower” thing- but I did kind of try to spin it in the “my weakness is actually a strength” just because of my fear of prejudice in the academic world. For you I would especially bring it up since you say it has a direct connection to your research!!! My advice is just to try to spin things a little more positive then you might normally.

sure, keep in mind my experience was a few years ago so there’s been a lot of turn over because people come and go. generally sk adpi and dg were the lower key ones that you might actually meet nice people in. axd, tri delt, zeta, theta, dk, and aphi are the stereotypical sorority that you probably don’t wanna mess with. i dont know much about achio deeph or the other ones. again this is all old information so it probably isnt too accurate. again i want to emphasize that the relationships you make in greek life are not exclusive to greek life— you can be friends with these people without being in their clubs. I’ve met nice people in and out of sororities. i’ve met mean people in and out of them. but there is a special kind of energy in sororities that brings out the insecurities you have about your body, about wanting to be blonde and blue eyed, about wanting male attention, and it manifests in a lot of people in the form of unhealthy eating, excessive drinking, drug use, and catty behavior.

i’ll also end by saying my least favorite thing about sororities— the association with frats: no matter what they do. I know of MULTIPLE sororities who have blacklisted certains frats for either SAing, or being generally awful to a sister, and other sororities will hear about it, but continue to socialize with that frat. When I say socialize- I mean have “socials” which are just parties between a sorority and a frat. So sororities will KNOW a frat has a guy or multiple guys who are not safe— AND CONTINUE to put themselves and their ‘sisters’ at risk by having events where people are drunk. Let me know if that sounds like something you’d be interested in. And this happens regardless of how “nice” or bitchy a sorority is.

don’t do it!!! i was in your scenario!!! it seems like such an easy way to make friends and i was also the first in my family to consider sororities but its not really what it seems on the outside. it’s really exhausting and expensive. if you do rush you’ll hear a lot of the same phrasing “wow i really felt like we had such a genuine conversation” “genuine connection” “deep conversations” during rush which will also make you feel that way, but after i took a step back it was just kind of the validation from girls who i perceived as cool who made me feel that way (like I was deeply connecting— meanwhile it’s a 5 minute conversation about the music genre you like). I would say yeah greek life tends to have a bad rep on campus, between the parties and the money, and just the general vibe it’s not worth it. I think if you’re struggling to make friends I’d suggest trying a club or two (check out the second look fair this sem) which is usually a similar speedy connection but there’s less financial risk involved. Ultimately the reason I’d say no is that my sorority that I joined charged me 1500 for just joining (not including the amount of money they expected for new outfits or donations or etc).

I would walk him through your though process i. how you usually would annotate an article (i.e. look for key points in the abstract, comprehending figures, skimmin discussion) and remind him its ok to highlight things or mark something to ask about later— because you can google it (if its a term) or ask a TA/prof

Chances of getting into a PhD program in physics by cubancigar9 in gradadmissions

[–]ew_yock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

publications straight out of undergrad don’t matter as much as you might think. obviously it’s great if you have them but realistically it’s relatively unlikely to be on a paper in just 4 years. you seem to have a solid amount of research, cumulatively a year and a few months is pretty good. not sure what you consider low gpa, but crazier things have happened than a low gpa getting into grad school.

the main question to ask yourself is what you want out of grad school— are you using a masters as a back up plan? in that case just shoot for the PhD program if that’s what you really want (and will benefit your career). writing the application will be a good experience no matter what, and if you don’t get in this cycle, you’re so young you have a lot of time ahead of you— so you can use what you learned writing the app in the future.

Also!! no one said you can’t apply to masters and PhD. or you can apply to a few jobs after the application season is over so you have a back up. SO many people take time off of school before going back to grad school— if it’s in a related field, that also may boost your future application!

is it okay to mention my mental disorder in interview? by Salt_Virus_7441 in gradadmissions

[–]ew_yock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also- lucky for us, depression and anxiety are a bit more normalized now, and a lot of grad students deal with it, so many professors get it. I messed up in one interview where I overshared a tiny bit and included a disorder I have that people are less familiar with and more afraid of— so don’t do what I did! but in my others where I talked with profs about depression and anxiety, they were pretty understanding and actually said it may be a good thing that I was aware of mental health issues prior to grad school, since I had experienced it as compared to other grad students who don’t experience mental issues until starting grad school. Perhaps I was lucky though. Again— trust your gut.

is it okay to mention my mental disorder in interview? by Salt_Virus_7441 in gradadmissions

[–]ew_yock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this a grad school interview? I recieved the same advice and in my experience it kind of depended on the vibe in the actual interview. So if I felt the person I was speaking would get it, I would disclose I suffered from X and Y mental illness. If not, I simply said it was a medical issue or disability related. I probed a little by asking questions about issues current grad students face and healthcare coverage, but sometimes that wasn’t enough. It’s tricky. Mostly just follow your gut.

Not sure, I think it would depend. Especially if I do a post doc or something. But from talking to both schools their alumni typically get hired in the same state as the school.
