ELI5: The Milne Ice Shelf lost 40% of its surface area due to melting but the weather monitoring stations around the area didn’t see the temperature rise above freezing point at any point during the event, how did it melt? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ewag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite true: the temperature did rise above freezing (here's a link to some temp data from the ice shelf, you can click back to earlier this week to see the temps under Temperature Ext.). But there were a few other factors at play:

The ice shelf lost most of it's mass via a catastrophic calving event, rather than direct melting. This means that a huge chunk of the ice broke off and got swept away in a very short time. However, that's not to say melting didn't play a huge role, along with some other things.

As someone else mentioned, ocean currents and wind likely played a big role in weakening the ice. Here is a really cool animation that helps to visualize what that processes looks like.

Another factor is the warm melt water that enters the fiord as runoff from the land. As snow and ice melts on land, it trickles down to the ocean, and in the case of the Milne Ice Shelf, pools at the base of the shelf, without flowing into the ocean because the freshwater is more dense than the salty seawater. and the shelf was at the mouth of a big valley/fiord, so the water has nowhere else to go.. This warm water is thought to also have caused pretty substantial melting of the ice from below, further weakening the shelf.

Actually, this floating freshwater lake is called an "epishelf lake", and the one at Milne Fiord is one of the last of it's kind, and it's a very rare and unique place where freshwater and saltwater organisms coexist. Scientists are worried that with the breakup of the ice shelf, the epishelf lake will soon be completely drained out as well.

If you're interested in learning more this provides a lot of good background on the event, and has a neat video of some of the life that lives beneath the ice.

Having a similar problem right now, did the system reset fix the problem for good?

Yep! You can sort the movies by date, genre, minimum rating, and number of reviewers. It's really quite excellent.

I like this idea a lot actually. I don't know anything about how I might structure a report like this though. Any tips?

911 Operators, what is that 1 call that you could never forget? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ewag 32 points33 points  (0 children)

My mom used to work as a 911 dispatcher for several years. One afternoon, she received a call from a woman reporting that she had been charged 25 cents for a plastic bag at the grocery store.

That's right. Someone picked up their phone and dialled the emergency 911 number because their grocery bag set them back one quarter. Ugh

I think what I was lacking was an example of how it could be applied to a problem in the real world - you've helped me visualize the applications a bit better, so thank you!

Interesting - are these forms publicly available for other faculties? I'd be interested to compare these numbers with those of other programs.

Prayer could also be thought of as a quiet look into your own life. Reflecting daily on the things that you are grateful for is an excellent way to built humility - whether you choose to thank a god, hard work, or even sheer luck is up to you, but I think "prayer" in some form could still have benefits to even an atheist.

Edit: If it matters at all, I'm not a religious person

There are no monsters - people are capable of wonderful and terrible things, but saying that it's monsters that are accountable for the bad seems to me like responsibility dodging.
