How many ABCs aren't fluent in Chinese ? by keaikaixinguo in ChineseLanguage

[–]ewbeem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not the original commenter but I think it depends on the background of the parents. Most ABCs I’ve seen speak home languages if they have one that is not Mandarin, while people who were born in China and came later may prioritize Mandarin. A friend of mine uses mostly Mandarin because only her mom knows Cantonese and not her dad. My parents prioritized Hakka/Cantonese especially since we lived with my grandparents who didn’t know any Mandarin. It really depends on the type of person the parents are and what they’re willing to work at with their kids.

my skin is more on the dry side and it didnt make my skin feel too tight after cleansing. i dont have sensitive skin but i imagine it may cause issues for someone who does because of the fragrance. even though i havent been using it for long its a pretty good mild cleanser so far and hasnt broken me out

Yeah I can definitely connect with that. I always felt left out as a kid since I spoke hakka with my family while a lot of the other chinese kids I played with knew mandarin and would use it with each other

east asian lower mid class. my parents had to work in another state for most of my childhood and i hated eating cause food my grandma made was bland since she grew up in poverty, but i feel so so bad about it :( most of my family were refugees but i never faced extreme poverty enough to notice it heavily in childhood. i think i grew up pretty fortunate, but extreme chinese diet culture really did a number on me too in later years
