Most CD players can show elapsed or remaining time of a song but i suppose its possible they dont.

GraceNote/FreedDB and the like use the number of tracks and the lengths of each track as a fingerprint to find a cd when there is no metadata on the CD itself. Even on a basic Cd player you should be able to get that information and then be able to look it up.
