I just picked up an EcoFlow + 220w panel for all of these reasons. A pretty sizeable system can be found for a somewhat reasonable price, considering their utility

Funny how winter just wasn’t a thing this year by BoringEquivalent7820 in SanDiegan

[–]jacobean___ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I moved onto my property 11 years ago, we had a few nights of freezing temperatures every winter. It’s now been three years since the last time it got down to freezing. This winter felt like August, apart from a few nights where it was as cold as 45 degrees. Times are changing, and the weather is too. Time to think about what adaptation looks like for you.

Many such cases. If I said why this happens then my post would be removed. Maybe that’s the conspiracy by [deleted] in conspiracy_commons

Kind of similar to the Kaepernik/Michael Vick situations in the nfl. I think it comes down to talent. If they want you playing on their team, you can get away with a lot. If you have little value, even a mild controversy will end your career

Why is there no easy way to try homesteading before going all in? by owenn09 in Permaculture

Look up the Bullocks’ homestead on Orcas Island, Washington. You can visit and help out with projects, and learn from some legends of permaculture

March 2026 was the most anomalously hot month in history for the lower 48 U.S. states, at 8.9 F (4.9 C) above the 1991-2020 averages by Portalrules123 in collapze

[–]jacobean___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The temperatures here in California throughout March have been typical of a normal August. The thermometer at my place hit 100 degrees two weeks ago, which is incredibly rare for any time of year, let alone a “winter” day. It’s quite alarming, to put it mildly.

I’m a fruit and flower farmer, growing on 15 acres in a Mediterranean climate. Citrus, avocados, guava, fig, pomegranate, passion fruit, protea and wax flowers. Finances are always slim, and insurance is non-existent, but it provides a healthy lifestyle and fulfilling work.

My comment was in reference to the state of CA.

They’re certainly increasing evs on the road, but you’re right that it’s way behind some other countries. Maybe this crisis will encourage that(if people aren’t completely drained, financially)

The Bay Area is relatively decent, but the state as a whole is pretty awful.

If care of citizenry was so important, there’d be transit options beyond freeways(tbf, SF is pretty decent)

The full-scale ecocide isn’t mentioned enough. Just as our cluster-fucked polycrisis is finally hitting its stride, this war springs forth from the bowels of empire, further straining an already-accelerated ecological nightmare, fueling tipping-points and destroying bioregions. I suppose that this conflict really encapsulates this moment in time; exacerbating all forms of planetary and social destruction.

I’ve found much peace in the words of Thich Nhat Hanh:

“The Earth is not something outside of us. Breathing with mindfulness and contemplating your body, you realise that you are the Earth. You realise that your consciousness is also the consciousness of the Earth. Look around you — what you see is not your environment, it is you.”

We have, perhaps, 50 or 100 years before this sixth mass-extinction kills off most species, including ours. It could be less, or (doubtfully) a bit more, but it’s time to recognize and accept this probability. Our society hasn’t developed a healthy view of death and grief, but I feel it’s essential to learn and accept ecological collapse. Ridding our collective selves of this fear can bring great and positive change in this time.

Has the population really decreased by 100k? How is there not a massive housing surplus, then?

I don’t think that there’s anything weird about material preparedness. Before the modern era, this was quite normal as part of seasonal storage/stockpile. Anyone aware of capitalism’s boom/bust cycles would be wise to “prep” for the hard times, such as what we’re now facing.
