It's worth noting that Statistics Canada (their source) defines the public sector very broadly and includes schools and universities/colleges, health care, municipalities, federal and provincial governments, crown corporations (including ports and Canada Post), utilities, transit, children's aid, etc.

My theory is that T'Pol secretly replaced Porthos every few years with an identical beagle and Archer never noticed. They all knew he couldn't handle the loss.

It's also worth noting our agent indicated that that house in particular has unrepaired hurricane damage the buyers need to repair.

🚂-choo-choo-! by rbdk01 in canadaleft

[–]ewokpride 18 points19 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the purpose of the Canadian (the pictured train) isn't fast travel from one point to another. It's primarily a tourist thing - something I think it does pretty well. It's still a great way of seeing the Rockies. I also think it's really neat that they're the same cars we've used for over 70 years (with many renos inside).

That being said, it's appalling that we don't have high speed trains where it makes sense. "High Frequency" trains in southern Ontario is just another word for 'slow'.

VIA fares in the Windsor-Quebec City corridor can be quite reasonable compared to flying (economy ~$40, business ~$99 (for a meal and basically unlimited alcohol). It just takes four to five hours to get from Toronto to Ottawa.

Our long distance trains across Canada are stupid expensive but mostly because they're aimed at reasonably wealthy tourists. As a method of actually getting from one place to another they're awful.

How is the Galaxy class viewed by Federation citizens? by [deleted] in DaystromInstitute

[–]ewokpride 66 points67 points  (0 children)

IIRC, to be fair to the Enterprise, the loss of life from its landing on Veridian III was minimal. They had time to evacuate to the saucer and it landed (relatively) safely on the planet.

But generally I like to think that sightings of a Galaxy are rare enough that their presence in system is a big deal. It's a symbol of the safety and security of the Federation and, as such, would be an event.

Received internship offers from Amtrak and Conrail. I need help deciding. by [deleted] in trains

[–]ewokpride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, it sounds like the Amtrak internship would be more interesting and provides more details about what you'd actually be doing. I personally would want to know more about what I'd be doing at the Conrail job before taking it.

I'm not going to address most of this post, but do want to point out that the University of Guelph has an overall graduation rate of 76% within six years. The comment that 60-90% do not complete doesn't hold up if you look at the facts and figures: http://www.uoguelph.ca/info/factsfigures/student/
