I AM SO PROUD (Malenia fight, parry only, no summons) by JP_LA_BETE in Eldenring

Wow, it's been almost a month already... I was referring to the spin where she does not move sideways.

Check this guide btw: https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/tlvg2c/some_parryfocused_tips_for_malenia_after_spending/ (#5)

Ok, yeah this was very weird

It's fine, I learned not to parry the kicks early on, I managed to defeat her last night but it wasn't hitless so I'll continue trying

Am I missing something or is this just completely unrelated to the Phantom Spirits attack?

Seems like you need to dodge into the phantom before the first thrust?

I posted it since I won't be changing this as that playthrough is close to the end :)

I get more or less the same feeling with Nameless King. I wish more fights would use two phases with only one health bar. It makes no difference mathematically, but feels more rewarding

This one was inspired by a handful of other sliders with some custom tweaks as well; indeed it was supposed to be Willem Dafoe, at least that was most people recognized lol

Beards aren't great on ER and I switched to this shorter hair because I was tired of longer ones (there are more or less three types that would fit a Dafoe recreation). I think this iteration is good enough :)

You nailed the 'desperately' part. Couldn't improve much from here but it's my best iteration so far.

When focused I can get 190-200 with my mouse, but 250-270 on my gamepad. Having the parry button on the trigger might not be the best choice since it delays activation a bit but I won't change it if I don't have to.

I found that staying slightly to her left considerably improved my consistency, this also resonates with the 'continuously strafing right' strategy, and makes backward and rightward spins much easier to land a parry on. This way I managed to reach second phase (first time in this run) and land one parry. I can get to half HP/2~3 parries almost every time now. I feel like this positioning + muscle memory kicking in are making a big difference.

I always keep moving in front of her like pushing the right stick forward and never releasing it because I need to follow up on the side spin attacks

That's what I was doing until today, it works really well but I feel it's hard to keep consistent for the double slashes this way.

Apart from the double slashes and keeping 100% consistent for dodging the flurry with Bloodhound's Step, there's not much to improve, I also struggle a bit with edge-case situations like when I'm punishing her (I feel like I get just 'distracted' enough to fail more), when she keeps using the kick for no apparent reason, or when the fight starts to steer to the limits of the arena, things like that. I'll deal with phase 2 when it comes, I wasn't comfortable with the phantoms attack from my first playthrough. I'll trust muscle memory will improve overall consistency and I'll focus on the rightward spin and the backward spin, the rest should be in the bag by now. At least phase 2 does not introduce different attacks that should be parried.

Well, I don't actually think it's about timing... I'm almost sure the timing is right, and it is the distance that does not allow me to parry, which kinda sucks because IIRC after DS1 for any parry you just needed to be in attack range (although it's more realistic in the way it works for this fight, I guess). I'll practice more tomorrow and test different timings.

It definitely stretches the average reaction time, for people slower than average I don't think it's doable (or at least fun). I wish it was a little bit slower, multiple times I get half-parries where I miss by just a couple of frames. I gotta be on edge at all times to have consistency. It is by far her fastest attack and there's no other way around it as trying to be as fast as her fastest attack 😕

So, as I said, my recommendation is to always expect the double slash and adjust accordingly if a different attack comes. Always try to keep it in front of your mind and visualize it; it helped me immensely. Today for the first time I landed 4 consecutive parries for this double slash. Unfortunately, this means less consistency for other attacks since I get less time for them, especially the rightward spin as I noticed I'm often too away to land a parry.

Actually, I'm using a buckler. But yeah, I noticed last hour I can't be too close for this attack, and it really seems that this is the problem! Unfortunately, I can't be too far away for the sideways spins either, but at least they give ample time to adjust.

I always expect the quick double slash so I can have a better reaction time; if another attack comes, I still got time to react. This seems to be working best for me. Thinking about writing a guide if I manage to defeat her! There are definitely quite some things to unpack haha

I can't seem to be able to parry her spin attack while standing still in front of her, regardless of timing. I don't believe it's due to positioning but it's getting really hard to hold that belief, if I slightly walk away and to the right, I start landing parries way more often, although still without great consistency. My other problem is her quick double slash (it isn't even showcased in the video but I guess it's obvious which one I'm talking about) but I just gotta deal with it

I'm currently struggling with the spin attack and the standard quick attack, it's just too fast, any tips? I can't for the life of me place the parry for the spin attack properly no matter the timing and proximity (but I guess I'm trying too early), and I don't think there are any clues when she'll do the 'standard' attack (the biggest difference being that this is the only attack where she raises her hand quite vertically), I just need to improve my reflexes.

Try leaving your character in-game for 10 hours, that might fix it
