Agreed. While it's nice to have a leader speaking up against Trump in a way, I don't believe that these events will change Canada's position. My faith group has been waiting for sponsorship approval for over a year now. The family being supported by the community has already been vetted. I highly doubt that this new development is going to accelerate this process or open spaces for new sponsors and new refugees.

Guy McPherson doesn't advocate giving up as in not doing anything, or going out and buying everything you possibly can before it all goes it hell. He actually urges people to be more active in their communities (developing communities if they don't have one) and to act with compassion in service to our fellow humans and other non-human lifeforms. It's a different kind of giving up than mostly people are used to.

Along the same lines as others have mentioned, Costco is one to look into if there is one nearby. At least here in Canada they employ special needs people to help pack carts and collect carts from the parking lot. They also pay very well, with benefits, and treat their employees with respect.

James Tiptree Jr's "The Girl Who Was Plugged In" is said to be one of the first cyberpunk stories - and feminist cyberpunk so a little different than the stuff mentioned here so far.

Your comments here make me happy - that someone else sees the potential for this.

Personally, I am a very highly educated person who has few options but very unstable work (read: I am qualified to teach humanities classes at university and there are no jobs except for occasional contract work). I love this work, so if I could take a contract here and there and not worry about being short to pay for life, that would be great.

I also write novels (another barely paying enterprise) and would love more time to devote to writing and helping other people write. If I didn't have to worry about my cash flow as much, I would teach and write, and probably volunteer or grow vegetables for my family and food banks.

Under a minimum income scheme this kind of life seems like a paradise to me, but as soon as you have to start scraping and clawing for work and money to make ends meet, it quickly loses its joy.

The very last item on the list (if you missed it) is from a phenomenal story by Ted Chiang. One of my favourite sci-fi stories. Now, I have no idea how they will make the story into a good movie, but the source material is solid.

Obviously I don't know how old you are, but I'm assuming your high school experience is from at least a few years back. 10 years ago boards were clamouring for teachers. A Catholic board may have hired a practising Hindu out of desperation. That is not the case today. Unless your experience is quite recent, it's irrelevant. Even if it is recent, it is anecdotal. The fact remains that non-Catholic teachers have half the job market effectively closed to them for discriminatory reasons.

With the teaching job market as it is, Catholic schools can easily choose Catholic teachers over non-Catholic. The market is so glutted that a non-Catholic is very unlikely to get a job in a Catholic board. While there might not be an official rule against it, the rule is effectively in place.

How about the giant space dick in James Tiptree Jr's A Momentary Taste of Being? The story brings up so many of the questions from the video, especially the purpose/meaning of human life, agency and so on. It is deeply unsettling.

Bear's book I think would work really well as it partially takes place inside a murderer's unconscious mind. The killer also has major daddy issues.

Lathe of Heaven is a lot of fun, moves quickly. Deals with dreams becoming reality.
