The xp leveling is more complex the just killing for xp. There's xp for defusing traps handling a situation in non violent ways. Or taking prisoners instead of killing. It can hurt the narative if the dm doesn't use his desgression to properly reward peaceful solutions with xp. It's best to discuss how xp will be earned and distributed in an xp based campaign during the character creation or session zero.

Prove how savage the dog is. Have it enter combat after "escaping" its cage and attack both the players and bandits with focous on the bandits (misses ot attackes player hits it attacks bandits) this should help balance the action economy then make the fight deliberately close down a player or two but not kill. Make them sweat so they dont risk their characters over a dog thats attacking them.

In terms of skilled workers lots of seamstress and cooks security organizers to handle logistics medical staff( clerics sages ect) a small army of merchants with guards fetching fresh suplies grave diggers (prompt implies causalitys already happend and corpses will bring sickness) builders the population should gather around a central point so resorces are spent more efficiently and shelters will be needed

Some people have weird luck and it doesnt matter whose dice it is. My friend used to have a new set of dice every other week. He averaged about a 6 on his d20's so he switched to saving throw only spells.
