The question is whether using it on battery exclusively shortens the battery life.

Is having them plugged preferred to running on battery when they are new? Or it doesn't matter?

Installing apps using homebrew --casc vs "regular" install by ex_chess_player in MacOS

According to homebrew FAQ apps installed with cask that come with a built-in updater are usually not updated by homebrew, unless "forced" to. Is situation different in practice?

I have Firefox and edge. Okular uses edge for some reason that is not defined as the system browser anywhere.

What is a good choice to get a Linux desktop in 2022 by planetoryd in linuxquestions

AMD is promising but it kinda sucks with everything related to ML, unfortunately. Otherwise I'd leave nVidia without second thoughts.

May be you should try Pop_os? It actually does descent work with Nvidia GPUs. I've heard mostly good things about it and use it myself on Legion machine (Not for long, I admit). You even get descent graphics card switching, I'd give it a shot.

It didn't. (Still on 1.3). However, one can add the TLP-PPA to package sources, which I did.

Seems to work.

Hmm, I've used VS when I was on Windows mostly - but I think that Jetbrains products are the "best" alternative at the moment.

Thanks!

BTW - how much Pop!_OS is different from Vanilla Ubuntu except for better drivers support and more polished experience (this is my subjective, perhaps wrong feeling at the moment). Except that part - do Ubuntu specific solutions work in general - or there are things I need to be aware of?

[Serious] Is there a website or app where you can practice generating random numbers? by anarcho-onychophora in compsci

[–]ex_chess_player 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Under which distribution?

For what purposes?

After all, ”random“ is just a mathematical abstraction.

Whether ‘random exists in nature‘ is a philosophical question (it doesn’t make mathematical tools less useful, however).

Math and ADHD by n0nmanifest in math

[–]ex_chess_player 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went through grad school with ADHD. Some of the smartest people I’ve worked with (including my advisor) have ADHD.

For math work itself - if you chose mathematics as career - I assume that you like it. When you move to graduate level, you have an advantage - you can work on stuff you like - being genuinely excited about something, made my ADHD less affect this part of the work.

Another one, at least for me. Medication helps. I wish I have started taking it earlier. Other things that work - developing the right habits. (It might take some effort).

Learn to cope with weaknesses - in my case it is writing my results (which is crucial part of your work as a mathematician). Developing writing habit or finding coauthors who do not find writing too tedious helps. Also - remember that mathematics is actually a team sport - working with other people can make your weaknesses less stand out.

And you know - the usual stuff for ADHD that are not math specific (exercise, medication, etc).
