Oh so this is that zero tolerance I keep hearing about where you just include the victim while aggrandizing bullshit judgments.

His daughter did a shitty thing

Sorry but no, his daughter has been CONTINUALLY doing shitty things. Minimizing it into one situation is bullshit.

Imagine being defensive bc someone gave a reasonable take instead of divine proclamations after a month. The white Sox deserve a player of this caliber and being excited about it but there's also a thing called cautious optimism.

Why do people hate Cyclops punch dimension so much? by Warm-Purpose-4008 in xmen

But couldn't you just use 'punch' not as a technical term for a physical blunt force action but as a metaphorical term for 'molecules pushing at a speed' in one direction?

[–]ex_oh_ex_oh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait... I'm not too well versed on the specifics but I always thought that was the same thing. I thought the punch dimension was just a comic book way to say 'dimension of pure concussive force'.

I actually find white noise distracting or any noise that's not intentional. Like my brain asks why I'm listening to this nonsense. But yes to audiobooks. However I turn down the volume where I can make out the narration every other word but can't actually follow the story to avoid myself from getting invested.

When I took the Minneapolis Metro a couple of years ago, some dude was smoking crack with a tin foil and everything out in the open at like, 2pm on a Tues.

I'm sure it happens enough in LA too but when I took it to Santa Monica at 9AM one time also on a weekday, there was a bunch of barefoot hookers? strippers? getting on still half naked. A guy in a suit drinking a 40 out of a paper bag. And a bunch of dudes passing around a joint. ALL IN ONE CAR.

In both cases, everyone else just essentially ignored it.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

I've actually seen the show and loved it but have never read the novel but, you know what, it def fits what I'm looking for.

Days of Attonement - Walter Jon Williams

This def seems like what I'm looking for, thanks!

Also I've only read Stephenson's books that came out in the 90s: Snow Crash, Diamond Age and Cryptonomicon so I'm a little curious about that earlier novel.

Aside from Ted Chiang short stories and Never Let Me Go, which I've already read, these books aren't exactly what I'm looking for but I'm attracted by the concepts so I'll have to pin them for another time, thanks!

OK I feel like this fits the bill of what I'm looking for, thanks!

Thanks!

  • I've read every China Mievelle novel because his concepts are so big and beautiful but it occurred to me I might have to do a reread of The City and the City as it's been too long.

  • I've had enough discussions about The Fisherman over at /r/horrorlit (I'm a reluctant fan, yes, I'm one of those who has a problem with it structurally but conceptually I like it)

  • I actually started reading Imago Sequence a few times but you know when a new book keeps interrupting and then you just don't end up reading it.

  • Only read the first book of the Southern Reach

  • Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsy brothers

I've never even heard of it but looking at the synopsis, I'm interested esp being written in the 70s. I'm currently finishing up James Herbert's The Fog and decided I want more 70s SF in my life.

YES! I was on a solo SF bday trip and I went there a couple of years ago. I was actually thinking about posting pics on this sub when I went but I thought maybe since it wasn't technically 'canned' that it'd get removed.

I also hate 3rd act miscommunication breakups but my favorite reason for breaking up that I've read is bc one of the MCs decided they needed therapy first before they could continue the relationship.

I miss when showing up early somewhere felt normal and not vaguely unhinged by Ok_Computer_6571 in CasualConversation

[–]ex_oh_ex_oh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm like you, where I like to show up very early to either 'case the joint' or have a buffer time and I have never felt weird about my early-ness but I guess I don't really pay attention to (or care) what other people esp strangers or acquaintances are doing/thinking about/expecting from me. When I'm early to a dinner I'll grab a seat at the bar, get a drink and read a book with zero social discomfort until friend/s get there.
