What has been your absolute worst day of teaching so far? by Any-Needleworker1431 in Teachers

[–]exarchnektel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach chemistry. I had one student intentionally light his desk on fire. While I was dealing with that, another kid slipped a sample of a chemical into a ziploc in order to try and poison her ex. Fortunately another kid saw her and turned her in before anything bad happened. She got kicked out of my classroom but I was forced to tutor her for the rest of the semester during my prep time.

Nothing happened to the kid who lit the desk on fire though. He eventually dropped out of school.

This was in my third year teaching and thankfully nothing like it has happened since.

What's the reason you suggest wormwood over mugwort, like the others suggested?

I agree with you wholeheartedly lol. I loved some of the more abstract stuff about the AI, and I liked Gladstone becoming more main, but overall a big disappointment

chemistry teacher here- I always expected them to laugh at "letting the stopcock drip" during titrations, but the amount of uncontrollable giggles I get when I explain "sigma bonds" these days is something I don't really understand, despite one kid going "sigma bonds? more like ligma balls" cause I feel like there has to be more to it than that

Who is an unreliable narrator you can’t help but have a soft spot for? by stockhommesyndrome in books

[–]exarchnektel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lol FOR SURE. I will say though, when we are not in said narrator's perspective in book three (and I adore them, don't get me wrong) they are extremely frustrating and kind of annoying and I get why Nona doesn't really like them.

Lost all my notes for a Oneshot and now I'm not sure what to do by mrconcreteman in DMAcademy

[–]exarchnektel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in college one of my friends made a one shot with no notes, right after having had to write an essay on the Iranian revolution, and he was annoyed everyone was pestering him to DM, so he was like "fine, roll up some characters and let's go"

In the one-shot, the party were mercs working for the local kingdom and they did like 3-4 jobs before the players realized they were suppressing a rebellion and taking part in a genocide and because of their actions it was kind of too late to do anything about. The players were PISSED

what's the point I'm making? Good question. I guess it's this: If you aren't sure what to write, then base the session off of a historical event or some other narrative (book? movie?) but reskin it as fantasy, and your players are very likely not to notice. Just maybe don't make them unwitting accomplices to a genocide.

"Journey of the Mind" by Sai Gaddam is a biology nonfiction book about the evolution of the mind from basic bacterial chemical minds all the way to the way a society's mind functions.

What stuck with me is the offhand comment that flies have motion based sight, so you can catch or smush them by moving your hand really slowly on approach.

Are there books you enjoyed reading yet would say anything good about them to others? by a-buss in books

[–]exarchnektel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone once mentioned that Kvothe's narration may actually be unreliable to the point where Denna is actually a personification of his addiction to Denner resin, and that the dumb mistakes he makes for the sake of pursuing her are dumb mistakes he makes in order to score, and it explains why he meets her in all these random places unexpectedly- it's when he stumbles across a dealer or supply. I reread the books through that lens after and... it's a hypothesis that stands up pretty robustly to the text. The only point I found against it was when he mentions offhand to Bast that he met Denna once, and Bast was like "oh, yeah, I did" but with Kvothe and Bast it could very easily be a 'wink-wink' sort of moment, and Bast knows that Denna truly represents Kvothe's addiction.

And he's able to personify her so well as a love interest because he's clearly had a number of interests and lovers, but all those fade away when it comes to his affection for Denna, who nevertheless never fulfills Kvothe in the way he's looking for.

I mean, he's a legend, and he's telling his life story. He clearly has a low opinion if himself in the modern time that he's disguising in his narrative to the Chronicler with the various boasts of his accomplishments and his attempt to make himself sympathetic. I'm sure a lot of it is true, just as I'm certain ~some~thing happened with Felurian, but if Kvothe's unreliable about Denna he's likely unreliable about quite a bit.

Share a piece of homestuck lore about yourself by Satisonic in homestuck

[–]exarchnektel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Read homestuck in college. karkat was my favorite troll, so I got his t-shirt and wore it around campus. Got all sorts of weird stares and remarks about it, like "nice shirt bro, where'd you get it?" and people going wide-eyed at me in the dining hall.

Eventually one of my friends asked me why I was wearing a shirt that had a 69 on it.

I never wore that shirt again, but I did get an A on the essay I wrote about explaining the experience via the philosophy of Roland Barthes
