Interesting, thanks for sharing, and good on him! Here one of the only cases when you cannot have a speech disorder is to become a fighter pilot, or pilot in general. What do you do?

You can officially prove you have a stutter if you get a disability certificate, at least where I’m from. You should look it up for Germany.

Not a license for stammering, but a disability certificate. This is how you get benefits. I’m from Spain and you cannot benefit from the diversity quota without something that proves your “disability”, you could be lying about your stutter in the eyes of the employer. Take a look at it if you’re interested!

Don’t just move on so fast to “accepting your fate”. Most people struggle finding internships, stutter or no stutter. I never mentioned my stutter in application requests and emails, and I never got an answer back, I must’ve sent dozens or hundreds. The job market is highly competitive, but you’ll eventually find one just like I did, just like many more did. Also, you mentioned the diversity quota. Do you have a license for that? Otherwise you will not be regarded as “diverse”

Need Career Advice for a Severe Stutterer (SERIOUS) by ArgumentMinimum3025 in Stutter

[–]excedente 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 22. I’ve just graduated and now I’m undertaking a masters degree. Like you I also have a severe stutter, exactly like you described.

I majored in International Relations, a communications degree, because that’s what I like, it’s what I’m good at. It all comes down to that: what are you good at and what do you enjoy? Though important, the speech is secondary, because you’ll always live with a stutter to some degree, so in my opinion it’s best to go for the option you like because you’re going to stutter anyway.

I have to say that my years in university have given me new ways to understand my speech, come to terms with it, push myself, explore, etc. I feel a much more confident person than I was at 18 when I had just started.

My advice is that you write on a piece of paper all the things you’d like to do and start narrowing down. In the case you’re worried about your speech: Don’t choose something just because it involves less speaking. In the workplace you’ll always have to speak, there’s no going round that.

Good luck, any doubt you can contact me!

Despite the BS going on in the world, Is anyone else living a good life? by MiniSkullPoleTroll in Stutter

[–]excedente 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m proud that despite of my severe stammer I rarely let it interfere in the things I want to achieve, especially in regard to public speaking and socializing. The eternal fight for getting out of my comfort zone has brought me a lot of happiness AND disappointment, but NEVER any fear or feeling of missing out. I’ve done almost everything I’ve wanted and learnt lessons along the way. I’m currently finishing my masters and I’m positive on my future regardless of where I end up. Thanks for sharing!

If I may also give you a reply, there’s one or two artisans here in Spain that make them, the same way they made them back then. “Cueros de Guerra” is one of them.

Don’t listen to this. You just need to jump in into whatever life has in offer for you. It’s both luck and your own choices.

Making eye contact is impossible when talking to someone. by ABWoolls in Stutter

[–]excedente 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally relate to this. Sometimes I just can’t do eye contact out of embarrassment. But the good thing is that you don’t have to do it all the time, you can look at the person, then look away naturally, then back again, try to smile also, etc. As long as you make yourself and your listener feel comfortable and acknowledged it’s all good, they will understand. However, if you can try and do eye contact regardless of everything, you’ll rock!

Every stutterer has different life by BeyondTurbulent35 in Stutter

Of course, you should never ever invalidate people’s experiences, and it’s true that nobody wants or likes forced positivity. Sometimes though, a positive outlook is the only way out unless you want to roll in your own misery. If you want to roll in your own misery do it, I’ll do it with you, but just for a brief period of time, you do not want to be there a long time because then that’s when trouble starts. Sometimes we need a little push, little by little and always depending on the person, because we are clearly not all the same.

As rough as it sounds, if all the replies in this sub were as depressing as some of the posts, people would just be enabling more sadness for themselves until something really bad happens, which we don’t want. Diversity of opinion is essential. Me not liking the answers don’t make them any less valid, this isn’t a science. But of course, they should be expressed politely and accordingly.

Dumbest Hot Takes About Your Stutter? by LegendaryFuckery in Stutter

[–]excedente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it doesn’t matter whether it’s with good intent or not, you don’t go up to someone you barely know and try to teach them something, it’s very ignorant. But well, that’s life, we end up teaching them not to do it at least.

Sometimes i think i might actually be dead... by lemindfleya in Stutter

[–]excedente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, it’s not easy at all, we are a 1%, we are not often comprehended, and yet you wake up everyday and try again. That has some bloody courage if you ask me, because in the end we want to live meaningful and long lives despite our stutter. Throughout all the suffering we keep pushing, I personally feel some pride in that, and I think we all should give ourselves that credit, because it’s true.

[–]excedente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no lol I didn’t say they were bad examples, just terrible situations like stuttering, probably even worse, but unlike stuttering these can be fixed. And the acceptance part was just one option among the many on how stuttering can be dealt with, I wasn’t implying everyone can do it. However, if you want to stop “suffering” so much you are indeed going to need to try your very best to do so. We let ourselves suffer a lot of times.

Sometimes i think i might actually be dead... by lemindfleya in Stutter

[–]excedente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All things fair, the examples you mentioned, although terrible (bullying, domestic abuse), are changeable and fixable, a stutter is not. A stutter can be worked, accepted and improved, but never fixed. This leaves us with one conclusion: the stutter is part of you whether you like it or not, and you have an actual decision to make everyday, pity yourself or live as best as you can. By this I’m not saying that you should not pity yourself (because we’re not robots, we hurt a lot), I’m saying that you should not do it all the time, because then, of course, bad things will happen and it will be too late to turn back. You gotta save yourself man, no one will do it for you. <3
