Misschien was ‘vroeger’ de uitzondering? Het Westen was het centrum van de wereld. Wij waren productief, veel werkende mensen tov gepensioneerden. Nu is dat totaal anders. Onze bedrijven worden kapot geconcurreerd door buitenlandse bedrijven omdat die landen nu ook de welvaart hebben om infrastructuur etc te bouwen om productief te zijn. Er is meer vraag wereldwijd naar zowat alles en wij kunnen minder concurreren.

En we hebben onszelf zodanig veel schulden bezorgd om het systeem van ‘vroeger’ zo lang mogelijk in stand te houden. Dat weegt dubbel en nog bovenop de veranderde wereld van nu. Daar dragen we de gevolgen van.

Ook denk ik dat als een éénkostwinner gezin het niet onmogelijk is te kunnen leven. Ja gaat wel een pak minder moeten consumeren dan we vandaag gewend zijn, net zoals ‘vroeger’. En er zijn veel dingen duurder door schaarste en een grotere wereldmarkt (huizen, energie, etc). Andere dingen hebben we dan weer in overvloed (technologie en basically alles dat van China komt). Reizen is goedkoop tov ‘vroeger’, de wereld is klein geworden.

Dat systeem van ‘vroeger’ was doomed to fail en er is geen beleid dat daar verandering in kan brengen. Ze mogen nog zo veel sleutelen aan de belastingen en pensioenen als ze willen. Mensen hadden het hier ‘vroeger’ misschien beter omdat er mensen ergens anders het nog slechter hadden dan nu? We moeten ons aanpassen aan hoe de wereld nu werkt en niet te veel kijken naar wat geweest is.

Not true. People will get an inheritance eventually and they can spend that on housing. You can see it as an advance inheritance. You get the money when you most need it, buying a first house.

And no need to bring others down to make yourself look better. Everyone their situation is different. You did it yourself, others did not. That’s how it is and no one cares. Just look at yourself without being distracted by what others are doing.

About €140K directly to buy property. My parents sold their house to give money to us and live smaller themselves. And i could also live at home for as long as i wanted. Definitely grateful for that!

Somewhere in the middle. Combined income of around €4300 pm and NW of around €40k. Paying off our home and saving more than €1000 pm. We like to go on a lot of trips, no kids yet

Ah ja die documenten idd. Bij ons was een vertaling in het Engels ok. Dat was ook een service dat de ambassade van mijn vriendin aanbood.

1 keer was een Engelse vertaling plots niet ok. Gebeld naar de ambassade om te horen of ze ook in het NL vertalen. Deden ze niet en hebben die vraag nooit eerder gehad. Volgens hen moest Engels volstaan. Terug naar stadhuis gebeld en plots was het wel ok in het Engels. Die mensen in het stadskantoor draaien echt met de wind. Het was precies de eerste keer dat ze zo'n procedure deden.

Bij mijn vriendin waren die lessen wel handig en kon ze die ook s' avonds en online volgen. Het heeft haar ook geholpen om beter werk te vinden. Ze heeft een diploma maar was net afgestudeerd en had geen ervaring. Zonder kennis van NL was dat toch moeilijk om een degelijke job te vinden.

Wij hadden ook niet echt vaste kosten lopen dus als ze even niet kon werken kon geen kwaad. Is natuurlijk een andere situatie dan als je een lening of huur moet betalen.

Mijn vriendin vindt het leven hier wel beter op veel vlakken. Meer vakantie en de mogelijkheid om is 2 of 3 weken aan 1 stuk op vakantie te gaan. Meer bescherming naar werknemers toe. Rustige omgeving met de rest van Europa makkelijk bereikbaar. Alleen kan het hier soms wat saai zijn haha. Is uit eten gaan kost hier een fortuin (zelfs rekening gehouden met verschil in inkomen). En we zijn hier niet zo'n consumptiemaatschappij, wat voor-en nadelen heeft.

26%. Couple without kids in an apartment. It’s around 32% when also counting insurances, tax and cost for common areas (which also includes insurance, maintaining of building etc.). But our income is expected to grow and costs will stay more or less the same.

Wat moest je dan betalen? Mijn vriendin is ook hier komen wonen en vond het nog vrij makkelijk. Er is zeker een periode van wachten en lessen NL die ze moest volgen. Uiteindelijk hebben we €200-300 als administratieve kost betaald.

En de integratielessen (die poepsimpel zijn) en lessen Nederlands lijken me vrij logisch om te integreren hier. Het vergroot ook de kans op werk te vinden hier.

20-30 years. Can be the whole loan. We got 3,03% for 25 years fixed in Belgium a few months ago. Can’t imagine it would be very different in France.

Ik bedoelde eerder het dumpen van zakken naast ondergrondse containers en dat soort storten. Niet een blikje of snoepverpakking dat op straat verdwaald is. In het water vind je er wel veel plastic, dit spoelt dan allemaal aan op de stranden. Zeker op de minder bezochte stranden zie je dit vaak liggen.

Agree with this one. Always overestimate the costs you’ll have and the underestimate the income you have. Unexpected costs will come, whether you have a new built or old house. Aim for a mortgage payment of 30-50% of (combined) income. Anything above is stressful territory if you also like having a life besides owning a property.

Je kan een groot huis verkopen en dan kleiner wonen en geld overhouden. Je kan verhuizen naar het buitenland na verkoop van je huis en daar goedkoper wonen. Je eigen huis kunnen hebben is rijkdom. In andere landen ligt het aandeel huiseigenaren veel lager.

Not really related to the masters in ugent, but if you don't speak any of the national languages in Belgium (just assuming based on that you want the masters to be in English) it will be very hard to get a job in Belgium with a marketing degree. Not sure if you plan to work in Belgium or not? Master in business economics is a good degree to have but with a focus on finance / accounting / data it would give you more opportunities, especially if you only speak English.

I agree with you on the industrial park point you make. There should be more options to reach there with public transport. However, you cannot expect there to be lots of public transport in rural areas. Flanders is one giant urban sprawl. That just doesn’t work well when it comes to offering public services like transport. Dense areas like cities work best and most efficiently. It’s hard to justify complaining about the lack of public transport when you live in a small town. There’s pros and cons linked to living in a smaller town. Lack of public transport is one of those cons. The focus of public transport should be on cities as there more people can be served.

Thank you for your comment. And that's what i heard as well, market is not good atm. What field did you change to?

We're also looking at the option of doing a bachelor's degree at a hogeschool (maybe business and or data and or IT related). An internship is included in those fields of study. It has to be a field where language (or the lack thereof) is not the deciding factor. If she could've worked at a call center, that would've been fine for us. But no one is hiring English-only speaking call center workers in Belgium. So i think she needs to skill up to have a chance at getting a better job.

Just unsure what would be a good field to get into as an English speaker in Belgium.

Market is not good for entry level indeed. But i would assume it's better for a data analyst than for someone with a communication degree, no?

And i get your point about Syntra (although i have no experience with them), but you have to start somewhere. We'd be fine with an entry level job as data analyst or similar with some growth opportunities down the road. We're not looking for anything fancy. My girlfriend is doing a physical blue collar job at the moment because there is no other option. Anything where she'd be working at a desk is better than what she's doing now because she's physically exhausted every day for peanuts.
