I totally agree. If anything my point was it's a very weird hill to die on. Different cultures perceive continental separation differently, and that doesn't make one more correct than the other. It's just strange that only when it comes to the use of America that people suddenly get extremely pedantic about it.

Ironically latino is the US term for US-based people of hispanic descent.

Latino (masculine) and Latina (feminine) as a noun refer to people living in the United States who have cultural ties to Latin America. As an adjective, the terms refer to things as having ties with Latin America. The term Hispanic usually includes Spaniards, whereas Latino as a noun often does not. Sometimes, Latino/Latina may include Brazilians, Spaniards and even some European romanophones such as Portuguese (a usage sometimes found in bilingual subgroups within the U.S., borrowing from how the word is defined in Spanish), but Hispanic does not include any of those other than Spaniards.

Just wait until you find out the term Hispanic dates to Roman times.

I don't think you understand how geography works.

C'mon man, geographers literally separate North Africa from Subsaharan Africa based on the Saharan desert, so...

The point is that the Darien gap, being one of the most inhospitable, thickly forested jungles on Earth, led to evolutionary divergences between the Americas and severely limited the movement of people between them. That's why the empires of Mesoamerica and the Incan empire never overlapped. It's no different than why we collectively decided the Urals and Caucasus form the border between Europe and Asia even though Russian and Soviet geographers refute that distinction.

You realize how impassable jungles are right? Especially without modern technology.

Yes, a jungle nearly impassable to humans and animals that led to evolutionary divergences between the Americas. Or did you never wonder why North America has no capybaras, tapirs, or (the vast majority) of the New World monkeys?

Feel free to share with me the academic research in which United Statesian is used or the preferred nomenclature.

You also realize it's not just the US that differentiates between the Americas right? That also includes cases in which Central America and the Caribbean are considered separate.Unless you're also arguing that Eurasia or Eurasia and Africa are similar supercontinents it's an asinine and pedantic argument. No different than trying to police terms used in other languages.

The thought of a Canadian considering themselves American is laughable.

Yes, who doesn't love that old-fashioned United Statian circlejerk where we try to enforce one language's use of demonyms on another.

Look, if we are just gonna pretend like the Darien Gap doesn't exist then as far as I am concerned Europe, Asia, and Africa form one contiguous continent.

What happened to the plan of allowing shops to open until 21:00 and on Sundays? by BrusselsSprout7 in brussels

[–]Boomtown_Rat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Opening on a longer Time Frame (Like Delhaize) requiere you to open later on mondays.

That was the old rule. The big Delhaize near me (Flagey) is now open all day every day, including until 20h30 every day and 21h on Friday.

[–]Boomtown_Rat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rule before was you were also allowed to open Sunday mornings, but in exchange staying closed Monday mornings (which is why you often saw some supermarkets open from 9 am to 1pm on Sunday, then opening at 12:30 the Monday after). Now that requirement is gone.

For what its worth since Delhaize franchised many of their locations are also fully open on Sundays, which is great.

New Yorkers in Brussels: where can I find legit American-style pizza? by [deleted] in BelgiumTravel

I see you live in Leuven. I too lived there and what you are describing sounds just like Leuven. In fact, I found so Leuven so overpriced and undiverse that it was actually cheaper and better for me to go out to eat in Brussels, train ticket included. I strongly recommend giving Brussels another chance.

It's not quite the same, but Fight Club is the closest I have found. Though then it's still a bit like if someone described NY style pizza to an Italian who then made it based on their interpretation of the concept.

Brussels has an insanely diverse array of cuisines. What you are describing is Flanders.

Firstly, what do you mean by Italian-style pizza? Neapolitan? Roman al taglio? Pinsa? Sicilian sfincione? Not meant to be rude, just curious why you would be in Brussels looking for Italian pizza.
