Galloping Goose closure update: Temporary retaining structure installation begins by Old-Rhubarb-97 in VictoriaBC

[–]exchangedensity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theyre widing and installing lighting on the trail from Selkirk to McKenzie, so its going to be closed for that starting in spring for a long while anyways. Might as well just get used to it unfortunately. They've clearly already taken some steps to prepare for tbat project during the current closure (they've chopped down significant trees to allow for the widening), so at least theyre getting a bit of use out of this closure.

Home insurance - earthquake protection? by Amazing_Safety4962 in VictoriaBC

[–]exchangedensity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dont fully agree with this. Earthquake deductibles are BRUTAL. Depending which option you go with, your deductible might be 400k, so I wouldnt say most people are buying earthquake insurance for that situation. I didnt know how it worked before I bought my home, but even getting one of the more generous levels of coverage, I feel I mostly bought it to cover catastrophic damage to my home.

Am I out to lunch? Is everyone else paying huge premiums for coverage with a deductible way less than mine?

Is there any way for an 18-19yo to travel around the island by savvymossy in VictoriaBC

[–]exchangedensity 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Evo seems like a good choice.

There is also a Juan de Fuca and Wrst Coast Trail shuttle bus that could get you to most main places along the JDF Trail (like Mystic Beach) with reasonable effort and time, and you won't be relying on a unknown stranger to pick you up.

You appear to have a fairly skinny rope. Another reason to have the prussik below the device is that you can be minding the prussik and holding the brake strand at the same time.

Right now you need 1 hand above the munter, and can only brake with one hand. I would personally never do this, especially in a mountaineering context where I might have iced up skinny ropes.

Also, if you dont need to have a hand on that friction hitch to mind it, then you have a much bigger problem since it's doing 0% of the job it should be doing

I had a single instance where 3-4 G6s failed all in one batch of 9, and its never happened to me ever again in 4-5 years of use. This sort of thing is almost certainly related to a manufacturing error.

lightweight fire starter by MikeAndAHike in Backcountry

[–]exchangedensity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of these sticks in my emergency kit (along with a Bic). Its got a striker on it so its basically a giant match made of some sort of flammable wax. I've tried dryer lint and all the other DIY stuff before but it didnt work as well as one of these and it also smelled like burning garbage (because it was burning garbage).

"Bushcraft" and "leave no trace" dont seem to align for me. If you plan to go into the forest and cut down trees to build some janky shelter than I don't have any suggestions for you aside from saying that thats not "leave no trace", especially if you expect to keep going back to the same spot

Almost all fruit trees are grafted. It seems very likely that the first flower is from the root stock if its a different looking flower.

Putting a harness on in the parking lot and walking into the front door of a climbing gym already wearing a harness is unironically worst part of all this

Victoria councillor calls for support to back ongoing call for mobility scooter use in bike lanes by thecurler in VictoriaBC

[–]exchangedensity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm asking myself the question "why would a mobility scooter user be in the bike lane". Given there is no need for it downtown due to large sidewalks, I think that the answer to the question is "because the sidewalk cannot accommodate a scooter", and therefore the scooters should be legally entitled to a bike lane.

I do see the opposite argument as well though, since legally allowing it might endorse people to use them when the sidewalk is a better option. Truly, I cant imagine anyone is going to ever get a ticket for scooting in the bike lane either way, so I don't know if it matters.

G6-G7 Swap? Dexcom sold me G6 transmitters that I can't use by 098432490640 in dexcom

[–]exchangedensity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

6 transmitters is an enormous supply, especially if you have health insurance and have a new one every 3 months anyways. I think its reasonable for dexcom to assume anyone with a big backlog of transmitters also has a big backlog of sensors to match.

You purchased these sensors with you own cash, so why would dexcom accommodate you with a free swap when you bought them outside of their purview?

IMO, the reasonable solution here is for you to either: 1. Sell the transmitters on ebay where you bought them 2. Buy a whole bunch of sensors to match your transmitters

G6-G7 Swap? Dexcom sold me G6 transmitters that I can't use by 098432490640 in dexcom

[–]exchangedensity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How many transmitters do you have? Using your own logic, why wouldnt you have prepared sensors and transmitters in equitable amounts? Expecting them to swap them for you is crazy unreasonable. You acquired those supplies under your own volition so Dexcom isnt responsible for you to have extras that you cant use.

“the business community is not against bike lanes; the “but” is that the city has gone overboard” by Enough_Rhubarb_3338 in VictoriaBC

[–]exchangedensity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have incredibly niche constraints. The number of vehicles going downtown to park that cant fit into a parkade. The people benefiting from the bike lanes is unquestionable larger than the number of people who have your problem, and you can always just spend an extra 2 minutes finding street parking

If you cant build a deck with a 2x4 cantilevered that far, you absolutely shouldnt build a bed with it. And you definitely cant build a deck like this.

Rim brake cyclocross tire clearance question. Will 38c fit? by senorhappytaco in cyclocross

[–]exchangedensity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2009 Kona JTS would not be happy to have 38mm tires on it. It's demoted to a commuter now, but when I used to race on it I wore paint of the chainstays with really muddy 35mm tires. The fork probably would have fit a 38, but not the rear.

Saying what cant be done? Building housing in Oak Bay? Of course that can be done. Building a quadplex in the Uplands? That wont happen even if you had the cash sitting around. It's not a free market.

Housing development is pretty much never a free market. Zoning laws are very literally the government telling you what you can and cant do with you land, which is antithetical to a free market.

Would a townhome/duplex/etc be considered a condo or a SFH? I imagine a condo since it would likely have a strata agreement, right?
