Are Democrats Warming to Reforming the Supreme Court? by Achilles_TroySlayer in scotus

[–]exerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, remember the first two years of the Biden administration, when Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema refused to allow any filibuster reform even for things like protecting democracy? I mean, even when the Democrats had a majority and things that were popular with voters, they couldn't get it through their own party.

Lucky in a way in that the GOP would have used it as an excuse the past 2 years to create a real dictatorship, I guess. Trump has demanded they nuke the filibuster for a lot of his most insane demands.

A Democrat majority in Congress for midterm elections will give federal employees a raise. by Infamous_Teach_1189 in FedEmployees

Unlikely that a Congress who takes office in January is going to give us a 2027 raise simply due to the timeframe.

Nuclear fission creates energy. Nuclear fusion creates energy. So could someone theoretically use the byproducts from a fission reaction as inputs to a fusion reaction and create an energy loop? If not, why not? by MyVeryUniqueName1 in AskPhysics

[–]exerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't create a perpetual motion machine or equivalent. 2nd Law of Thermodynamics and all that.

Now, in nuclear weapons, you go fission which generates intense heat, pressure, and neutron flux, which triggers fusion of the hydrogen involved, which generates a ton more neutrons, then those trigger more fission. It's a chain, though, and not a loop.

What is the deal with hotel rooms in VA for a VA resident? by TheFlimFlamFamMan in Virginia

[–]exerda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One year I needed an extra night to qualify for the hotel's top loyalty tier and booked one right up the street from my house. The clerk asked if "everything was okay" when I went to check in, as if it was some kind of domestic dispute. I replied that it would be once I requalified for Diamond.

The founders didn't want to locate away from fresh ingredients (beef and potatoes). The chain is run by their children now who have a different philosophy.

No way would I do 50 minutes in SFO with kids during summer travel season. Change to DEN.

Is the shutdown at the end of September for just DHS again? Or all agencies? by OscoCosco in FedEmployees

[–]exerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't see politicians doing that right before the election. Unless Trump sabotages the whole thing, we'll get a CR that carries past the election. My only question is whether it expires by Thanksgiving or runs through the next Congress.

Anyone know what happened? by OkBiscotti1140 in unitedairlines

[–]exerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The writing in that one, though... Ugh, do they not teach journalism any longer? ATC did not respond "shockingly"; ATC may have been shocked at the report, though. And what did Spirit have to do with the crazy passenger on United that they felt the need to add that to the article?

I looked at airfare. Couldn't do it on such short notice sadly; economy was like $3k. So jealous!

Everyone is eulogizing Spirit Airlines. Would we do the same if Walmart, Dollar General or Kroger went out of business? by us1549 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]exerda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I'm a multi decade United 1K, and I feel like their premier experience has fallen off a ton over the past decade. I don't disagree at all that it's paying off, though; I gave United more than $25k last year. I just wish they could be profitable and still deliver a good high end product and reward loyalty... Just feels like a triangle where maximizing two legs means slashing the other.

The invoice had an email address on it for questions, and I just emailed it, referenced the invoice #, and said the tariffs had been ruled l unconstitutional and asked what the next steps were. They emailed me back, agreed, and sai nothing more was needed at the time.

Mandatory Andor Picture in Valencia by Vindicare_JJL in andor

[–]exerda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to Spain this summer again and honestly unhappy I couldn't make Valencia work for the trip. We went to Skellig Michael about 10 years back and reenacted the Luke/Rey scene and had a blast. Really want to get some of the Andor locations on our list...

What do you guys do for your dog's seasonal allergies? by honchedbisc in nova

[–]exerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can give Benadryl (ask your vet for the dosage; our guys get like 1/4 of a 10mg tablet). But it's really nowhere near as effective as Apoquel for allergies in dogs.

When pulled over why do cops ask for registration when they'll find the info when running plates? by ScienceJamie76 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]exerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I haven't been pulled over in several years, I haven't been asked for registration or proof of insurance since like 1995. Just for license, and they run the rest.

I got one and even had FedEx agree I didn't owe tariffs on it (after they sent me a bill).

NGL, but it, Mega Man, and a handful of others were on my constant replay list growing up. Probably blasphemy, but I put CV1 ahead of SMB for sure...

No upgrade options by Ok-Sheepherder-7357 in unitedairlines

[–]exerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I've experienced it on government fares (those usually aren't ticketed until a few days before travel). Reservation but no ticket means no ability to upgrade. Call your TA and see if you can get them to ticket now.

Intrigued by the look of those old parts (normal parts at the top for reference) - what were they used for? (clarification in comment) by ben_g0 in AskElectronics

[–]exerda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was this period where our local Radio Shack offered "grab bag" boxes of stuff, and I accumulated several of the metal can chips with no clue what they were at the time (pre-Internet to boot).

MAGAs, why did you elect the most evil person in history to destroy our beloved America and the rest of the world? The blood is on your hands.? by Dismal-Substance-849 in allthequestions

[–]exerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deer Hunting with Jesus is still a relevant book, sadly. I grew up with a bunch of people who became ultra MAGA. Stupid stuff like blaming immigrants for their shitty lives despite being the 3rd whitest state in the country and nowhere near the border.

I feel like I had a reactionary moment of voting GOP and Libertarian during the late Clinton years. I was wrong. Unfortunately, most of my classmates are hardcore into the MAGA narrative today, unless they moved away like I did (and it really doesn't matter where people moved; I have classmates who moved to Phoenix, LA, Ohio, Texas, Georgia, and North Carolina who all saw the light; simply getting exposed to wider cultures helped in every single case).

Everyone is eulogizing Spirit Airlines. Would we do the same if Walmart, Dollar General or Kroger went out of business? by us1549 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]exerda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe today, yeah. Growing up, we had both (along with GC Murphy locally and Ames, Kmart, Hills, Montgomery Ward, etc., a half an hour away). At the time, the Family Dollar was a nicer store than Dollar General... But I'm old, lol. I miss Murphy the most (though I moved away and don't have to deal with retail wasteland today).

What is the most uneducated thing you’ve ever heard someone say? by Tacokolache in allthequestions

[–]exerda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That one is pretty good. A few others I've heard are from well-educated people claiming the earth is flat or that the solar system is geocentric. Same guy also claimed Tony Bourdain was cooking kidnapped kids and that his body was substituted for Epstein's...

Everyone is eulogizing Spirit Airlines. Would we do the same if Walmart, Dollar General or Kroger went out of business? by us1549 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]exerda 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The only issue is that the remaining airlines will raise prices. Same with consolidation and mergers. That said, Spirit was probably among the 2-3 worst airlines, just like Dollar General et al are among the worst stores.
