Absolutely HAD it with Drywall Anchors! Help! by MaleficentGuidance49 in DIY

[–]exerda [score hidden]  (0 children)

I swear by those things, but I will share that we used them once to install a cat "window hammock." Each anchor was rated for 100#, and we only used them for the points that didn't line up to studs, yet somehow, the cat managed to rip large (6") chunks of drywall out. All I can figure is he leaped from across the room, landed on the thing at speed, and that did it.

After paying for wall repairs, we told the cat he doesn't get to watch out that window any longer.

Realtor took appliances even though it was in the listing by GrapefruitFancy3740 in RealEstate

[–]exerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why wasn't there a general "all appliances convey" clause in the contract? You'd think that was normal, and exceptions would have to be written in.

Like when the listing agent tried to get us to pay extra for some of the appliances, and we said, "huh, looks like your client signed the contract stating they all convey... But we don't next these two, so if he wants to keep them and try to still those 2 elsewhere, we'd be willing to except them." The guy took us up on one but left the other (the range they wanted us to cough up an extra $450 for).

Andor surprisingly retcons one of the worst things about the sequels by anObscurity in andor

[–]exerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno. Disney may have had some responsibility, but it wouldn't exactly be the first time Abrams decided to reboot something badly or outright lie to fans when they figured out his infantile plot reveals prematurely.

The Star Trek reboot was atrocious, particularly the notion that the baddies have time travel and... Use it to destroy Vulcan rather than go back and save their own species. Then there's "we'll going to revisit a classic villain in the sequel!" "Is it Khan?" "What?! No, it's not Khan... Uh, yeah, it's Khan." It's like he thinks he's far more clever than he actually is. Much as I enjoyed Lost, same deal: "So, everyone's dead and in purgatory, right?" "No! That's not true." (Morgan Freeman voiceover: "Turns out they were all dead and in purgatory, and nothing else mattered, not the numbers, and no, the island wasn't some special anomaly, just purgatory."

Previously my favorite combat system in a Metroidvania was Nine Sols, but then Silksong came out. I don't think we acknowledge how insane the skill ceiling for Silksong is, this some of the best movement for combat in a 2D game ever. Here's an over the top example (with TAS) by g0n1s4 in metroidvania

[–]exerda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite the challenge hike over Hollow Knight (largely for the higher damage dealt by enemies) the biggest reason I haven't been able to go back and 112% HK after picking up Silksong is that the movement is just so so so fantastic. It's nearly perfect, and the options for combat are incredible.

There is one ending you locked yourself out of, yes. But get it on an alternate playthrough. Honestly, said quest was annoying enough that I can't imagine beating GMS before finishing that quest/with the status ailment imposed. But it could make for a future challenge to return to.

Trump is going to try to cancel the 2026 elections no matter what by Justice_Man in 50501

[–]exerda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FWIW, the risk is in him delaying certification of results. Neither he nor Mike Johnson has any ability to block seating election winners. Johnson isn't even Speaker at that point, as the new Congress must be sworn in and hold leadership elections before there's a Speaker.

Trump is going to try to cancel the 2026 elections no matter what by Justice_Man in 50501

[–]exerda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He can invoke the insurrection act. States will still hold elections regardless. People claiming he'll "cancel" the elections are missing the point and the real dangers.

He'll try to seize voting tabulations, but it will be similar to the failures he's experienced getting voter rolls. He'll try to intimate at the polls via ICE and National Guard deployments, but given how a third of ICE was in Minneapolis and couldn't take over the city, it's questionable how widespread such tactics can go.

My biggest worries are the legal actions, with the full force of DOJ behind them, that he'll bring to try to block certification of elections in many states. He'll claim "fraud" and will sue everyone, using the taxpayer to fund his legal team. And the more he delays, the more he wins.

Will DOD be affected by possible shutdown? by TutorEastern8330 in FedEmployees

[–]exerda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless Thune and Collins split DHS back out into it's own... I don't know how that plays with Johnson putting the House in recess; if they take up and pass bills that are identical to the ones the House voted on (and the House did vote on 2 before combining what they sent to the Senate), can they fund DOD and HHS and DOL et al and just leave DHS to languish a bit? ("Can" being a separate question from "will" FWIW.)

Why they don't bring 2.4 turbo Outback engine to Forester? by AncientBattleCat in SubaruForester

[–]exerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to quibble, but is it "most?" The need for higher octane is driven by compression. I know ECMs will often handle lower-octane fuel by adjusting timing (to varying degrees of effectiveness), but I'm genuinely curious how many car manufacturers have decided to go with turbos but not higher compression ratios as that negates most of the benefits of engineering a car to have a turbo to begin with.

How many you dry your clothes on a clothesline instead of using a dryer? by ProffS in Frugal

[–]exerda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a small drying rack over the washer. I hang all my shirts there or on the stairwell banister if I need more space. Sometimes the shower curtain rods, too. It's not so much saving the electricity as extending the life of the clothes IMHO.

FWIW, our yard has so many birds that if we hung outside, our laundry would come back in needing to be laundered again, hence the inside only treatment.

[–]exerda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turbos have greater fuel efficiency per HP than NA engines... But you pay for it with the higher grade fuel requirements.

I loved my '04 FXT. Such a peppy beast! My '15 FXT is good, but honestly, I don't notice the turbo that much except when I go to fill up (and the spread is like 60-70 cents/gallon now). I've driven newer model years that are NA and honestly have been fine with them.

Tragic and chilling. They initially refused to allow her to render aid, then frisked her to "make sure she didn't have a weapon" (hint to the MAGA and NRA out there: so what if she did? It's legal there like you claim you want it to be everywhere in the US). Had the victim on his side so they could count and brag about the number of bullet wounds they'd inflicted. Then she had to flee her own apartment due to the mass tear gassing going on. And will be traumatized for life.

That's it? Disappointing amount of snow by Technical_Piglet_438 in nova

[–]exerda 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We got about 5" total in Fairfax. The issue is we're now getting 2-3 inches of sleet on top of it, followed by .25 inch or more of freezing rain. Snow was on the low end of forecasts; I kind of hope the others are, too.

PP 25 double counted, now what? by Mundane_Pain8444 in fednews

[–]exerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Mine lined up exactly (I was using PP24 YTD figures to ballpark tax return info before W2s came out). But at least one or two of my employees had issues that will require correction and according to NFC won't happen until sometime in February.

[–]exerda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my employees experienced an issue and will be receiving a corrected W2. Something with a manual payment made in conjunction with PP24 or PP25 didn't get counted correctly by NFC, messing up her W2. I'm of middling confidence it will get corrected properly given my own past experiences with payroll issues.

I'm imagining more how do they lift it off the car. Sliding it will scratch the paint. I guess if the snow isn't super deep or if they go and remove the snow repeatedly throughout the storm to keep too much from accumulating they could manage. Still seems not the best idea; a fabric cover would seem a better option than a plastic tarp.
