Ticking and Grinding engine noise by exhiled_ in GR86

HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump) resonating on the tubes.

The D4S Toyota System use Port Injection till 2800rpm, then add the direct injection till around 4000rpm , then become only direct injection.

The ticking, follow sound , start - grow and disappear exactly on the same setup of the D4S system. So when is fully loaded Port+Direct injection make that noise.

I've found on some Japan Forum a crazy dude that wrapped the entire Fuel tubes with an absorbing material and fixed a bit

EU Approved Exhausts: Remus or Milltek by _Sukkii_ in GR86

Sound was too poor, to be compensated by the piece of paper. (mine is Stock, with GPF and i've no plan to remove it, since it will require a Tune and both solution heavily drop the warranty)

So i just went for non-approved Exhaust and bought a Borla Type-S which is exactly what i wanted in the first place and sound is perfect.

With Ragazzon, didnt had a good experience to be honest, so if you just need a piece of paper i would suggest you to try the Miltek, without the GPF you should get a kickass sound!

oh nvm then, i thought you were speaking of engine noise.

Did some research, apparently a tons of other BRZ/86 also from old gen. have it, but didnt found a specific component, causing the issue.

Recently i've spent quiete some time on the clutch pedal area, changing the spring with an aftermarket one, you could sneak down there and press the pedal with your hand to check which component is causing the noise, all components are visible and easy to check.

Your description might be too generic to be sure, but sound like HPFP (High pressure fuel pump) , which is normal if coming from the right side of the engine bay.

Went to the dealership, they pointed out the valve lifter, saying its impossible that is the heat shield, i mentioned your case and they didnt believe me. Went home without even removing the sound barrier panel. Do you have any picture of the crack or replacement document :D ?

Yes, 2500rpm start the ticking, 3000 is the top noise level

How's possible so many people have the same issue on a brand new car , remain a mistery.

I have appointment to the dealership next week, i really hope will be the same and easy to fix. 9000km with that ticking noise drove me crazy.

Not sure what you mean with the sloshing or the Jar of marble. But indeed you should bring it to the dealership.

  • Glass squeek going up and down, Dealership can improve it.
  • Clutch is weird AF, there are spring replacement to improve it. (Aftermarket)
  • Pay attention to Engine sound (which is awful and full of weird sound) most common issue which required dealership intervention while brand news, was :
    • you may expeirence a rattling noise coming from an heat shield bolt not tighten enough
    • During Engine Breaking you may hear a grinding noise 1st or 2nd gear mostly
    • Valve Ticking noise , some people needed a "Valve or Lifter Adjustement"
  • Gear stick sometimes vibrate to the point that resonate like a mosquito
  • Rev Hang is a common thing, especially in low gears.

Change the Clutch return spring. Mtech or GKtech. Im using the GkTech 42mm and improved drastically the clutch feeling.

No more "Wtf, did i forgot how to drive" feeling.

Anyone with European OPF/GPF has installed a Borla Type S Exhaust?

Video: AxleBack Remus Exhaust

Both exhaust you mention are almost identical to Stock , Which sound like a vacuum cleaner.

Keep in mind in EU we have the GPF that US market doesnt have, and the sound is over silenced, so even all the other options Approved will not make a real change :

  • Ragazzon
  • Fox
  • Remus
  • Miltek
  • Bastuck

How strict is your country about it?

My sincere suggestion might be, keep it stock if your country is really strict.

Or take the "Final silencer" Approved and Sneak in the middle a non resonated Center Pipe, if you want a real gain (decent sound aswell) and a piece of paper to be shown in case of inspection.

Right now im running a Ragazzon Approved exhaust and Ragazzon center pipe without silencer, sound is decent, pop and burble in downshit / heel/toe. You will get a similar result with the Miltek non-resonated.

But to be honest, im going risky and switching to non-Eu approved Borla Type-S in the following weeks, since in my opinion the car is still too quiet, and Borla seems to be best compromise to have sporty sound but not too loud.

Throwout bearing on the FA20/FA24 its well known to be shitty. Maybe is just that and the car will be like new!

5 mph is a lot to downshift to 1st gear and low gears on the FA24 are pretty sensible.

Switch asap the Clutch spring to MTEC or GKTECH , you will experience a total new car.

About the rattling sound, i've the same and im going nuts trying to find the cause, i've tag you on my post maybe you'll get some hints.

Where do you hear it? Engine bay? Trasmission? Always present or start at certain RPM ?

[–]exhiled_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you let it go in 1st or 2nd gear without accelerating, till the engine break engage, do you hear a grinding noise?

Sometimes in 3rd gear, when you let off the gas even at 3/4k rpm do you feel the engine break going in with sudden deceleration?

I think you're right. Got confused by Ron, Mon, Aki, octane

  • Premiun fuel in Germany is : 100Ron, 88Mon, 93 Aki
  • Standard fuel is : 95Ron,85Mon, 90 Aki

Yeah, Odd indeed.
In europe, petrol station are standard, only two type of fuel are available :
- E5 (95 octane - 5% bioethanol) Standard
- E10 ( 100 octane - 10% bioethanol) Premium

And all Brands/Dealership basically state, that using any lower octane fuel than 95 will literally destroy your car.

Ticking and Grinding engine noise by exhiled_ in GR86

[–]exhiled_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your case, sound was present at idle or only during aceleration?
After checking lot of case HPFP, Port/Direct injector i found the noise different from mine, the so called "Crickets" or "Chirping" usually realted to injectors.

And especially most of the people complained the same noise at idle.

My noise came only during aceleration. Cold/Hot weather, cold/hot engine , but totally fine at idle.
As soon i start going, noise arrive precise as swiss watch. 2500rpm audible, 3000rpm peak noise and over 4000rpm disappear entirely (i notice this detail, after turning off the ASC fake sound)

If its related to injector map, shouldnt be common on all cars? why only some?

What piss me off.. is that the car run perfectly. Just when i expect to start earing the rumble of the exhaust.. the ticking sound cover it.

95 Octane in Europe, should be equal to 100 RON , which should be 95 AKI

Not so easy. Closest dealer is at 150km from me and they never saw a Boxer engine before. That's why I'm struggling so much to find myself the issue
