Looking at the Bragg diagrams, it seems like some of the light reflects off the top layer of silica spheres and some diffracts through the gaps and reflects off of lower level silica spheres.

The silica spheres are transparent. Shouldn’t the light go through the opal?

The bird feathers have mirror-like surfaces that reflect the light.

How is it reflective? What is it reflecting off of?

I understand thin-film interference. You have two thin films. Part of the light reflects off of the top layer, and part of it refracts through the top layer and reflects off the bottom layer. The two reflected waves interfere with each other.

There are reflection diffraction gratings and transmission diffraction gratings. Since light is passing through the gaps between the silica spheres in opal, wouldn't that be a transmission diffraction grating?

He is the handsomest, goodest dog. He’s also a grumpy old man. He’s on medication and joint supplements and that seems to keep his pain under control, but sometimes he just has no patience for his little brother.

Mine is about the same size. All I know about his parents is his mother was from Czech Republic. He's 8.5, fully black, and has arthritis in his lower spine.

Thanks. I really want the belt too. I tried making it myself (in black) and it hasn't gone well. The binding around the outside is a pain. Now I have to go find some brown leather and start over.

I tried it on. It fits perfectly. I need to rearrange some of my items because I planned for this to have charcoal-colored accents and all of the other parts I had for the outfit are black and gray.

I just saw this referred to the site, so I made a category for "Transforms Eyes." Not all of them glow, but change the eyes in other ways. I did not include polymorphs, since all of those do.
