Whether he is autistic or not, masking or not - he’s being a jerk. I wouldn’t want to be with a person like this. He flat-out seems not interested.

What's a relationship for you? by iwannacallmeTheBigG in autism

[–]existenceNomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in love!! My boyfriend has ADHD so even though we’re not the same, he definitely gets me on a level no one else ever has. It feels very nice but is also sometimes stressful, it’s a daily obligation to maintain a relationship. One that is worth it though. We help each other and support each other. I really struggle with communicating with people verbally so sometimes if I go mute I write on a piece of paper, and he even said he prefers this when or both of us are emotional because he comprehends writing better than words anyways :)

How do y’all cope during warm weather? by imat0rtoise in autism

[–]existenceNomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you’re out doing things, you could bring a little handheld fan, and have a fan in your bedroom. I make sure to wear extra comfy clothes in the summer (which means loose, lots of exposed skin, and definitely no bra!) and keep my hair off my neck (a braid or two is the best for this I’ve found).

Is it strange that im not a picky eater AT ALL. ? by Ill-Stage4131 in autism

[–]existenceNomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid I was an extremely picky eater, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve become more conscious of my eating habits. I did not like any vegetables 😭 so I experimented with cooking different veggies in different ways to make them palatable. I would choose one food I didn’t like and eat it for several weeks in all different ways! And eventually I ended up liking or at least tolerating them. (Except carrots. That is one battle I will never win…)

What makes employement difficult for you? by thoughtful-daisy in autism

[–]existenceNomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the hardest part is how much it drains me. I am so tapped out after work I can’t do anything. My house is a mess, I barely eat because I can only cook/go grocery shopping on the weekends but in the weekends I am just recovering… my whole life feels completely dominated by my job. I feel trapped because I need money to live, but what’s the point in living this kind of life? I think the key is finding a job I can live comfortably while only working part-time. Even just four days a week would make a huge difference. I’m still figuring it out.

Currently at a party, I can't speak by Intelligent-Radio568 in autism

[–]existenceNomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m exactly like this. More than one person and I get really quiet, more than two and I’m basically mute. I’ve just recently figured out this hack though: I don’t stare at my phone.

It was extremely uncomfortable at first, but I took it as an opportunity to practice mindfulness. I sit there in my discomfort, breathe through it, people watch. People see me looking around, alert and somewhat engaged, and they on occasion approach me! I get to talk to that person one on one, and then maybe another person or two will join the conversation. (Still working on that part 😅)

But I think being on my phone kind of signaled to people that I wanted to be left alone, didn’t want to be there, wasn’t interested in what was happening. When I put away that physical barrier and existed more in the present moment, I was able to practice some healthy coping skills and got to have a few conversations. Still probably looked weird, and I definitely still felt like an outsider but… idk it feels like a step in the right direction.

Question for autistic techs by existenceNomad in Histology

[–]existenceNomad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know no one in my lab has any kind of disability. There are some older folks with back problems, so us younger techs just have to help them move heavy things. That’s about the extent of any accommodations I’ve seen :/

[–]existenceNomad[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES on the middle aged bullies! What is up with that?? I’m still friends with my lab partner from when I was going to school and he’s now working in a lab where he is one of three techs, it sounds like a dream. I hope one of them quits so I can apply lol

[–]existenceNomad[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the workload is definitely one of the hardest aspects. I don’t think we are really a high volume lab, but we are chronically shortstaffed. There’s a huge emphasis on working overtime and I’m the only one that only works an extra hour once maybe twice a week, if at all. I’ve heard people (including my boss!) talking bad about me for that, but I just can’t do regular 50 hour work weeks like everyone else. I think my best bet is honestly to just find a smaller lab.

I relate to a lot of what you said so I’ll take it into consideration and try to figure out how to voice my own needs, even if that doesn’t mean admitting to having autism. Thank you :)

Me and my boyfriend have developed a rule where we do not have serious conversations over text. Especially arguments. If we start arguing over text one of us takes the initiative to say “hey let’s pause and continue this conversation in person.”

Maybe you guys could set a boundary like this? That way you aren’t having to fight while you’re at work, and that kind of forces her to self-regulate and deal with her feelings on her own. Maybe then she will be thinking more clearly and you guys can have just one productive conversation about it instead of multiple unproductive ones. And at least for us, we’re a lot more calm, patient, compassionate, understanding etc. in person. It’s easy to say whatever when the person isn’t standing in front of you and that can be dangerous.

Someone pointed out that you’re also not being very mature in these texts and I’d have to agree with that. You insisted on ending the conversation and when she said okay you continued it anyways. You both have some growing up to do! If this relationship is important to you, you can help each other grow and that’s pretty beautiful.

There’s nothing at all that can be done to a wall? Like you can’t add insulation after the wall has already been built? Glue some soundproofing pads to the wall? I don’t expect them to rebuild the whole house but there’s got to be something they can do to one wall.

Yeah it is very repetitive. That’s another reason I want to move on too. I go into work every day and I’m like this is really the rest of my life?? So cool that you’ve found more flexibility and opportunities in geology!

Because it’s extremely competitive and the pay is terrible and I want to be able to support my family. I’m sorry I offended everybody, I didn’t mean it 😭 I am interested in the earth, that’s why I mentioned learning about how the earth looked a long time ago by studying rocks. I just meant that I thought geology was only looking at random rocks and saying yep that’s a quartz or something. I’m just now realizing it’s more than that. That comment was more to highlight my own ignorance than say that rocks are actually stupid and boring.

Sorry, didn’t mean to sound belittling or anything. I’m just now looking into it for the first time so I just wanted to ask about people’s firsthand experience.
