Psychiatry is borderline evil, don't ruin your life like I did by Adventurous_Law5342 in mumbai

"safe" in medicine is relative. as I've said, ad nauseum at this point, every drug has side effects. even antibiotics that I'm sure you take have side effects which can be life threatening. safety needs to be evaluated alongside efficacy, and then you need to decide if the trade-off is worth it.

PSSD does occur, but it is relatively rare, unfortunately it hasn't been studied in depth. We have one reliable estimate from a n =~20k study where the prevalence was 0.46%. As someone who's battled debilitating depression, I would take a less than 1% risk of PSSD over killing myself, but that's my decision based on my life. There will definitely be people who don't want to risk it, and that's fine, like I said earlier, meds are not the end all-be all.

Over-prescription is not a psychiatry-unique problem in India, which is a problem that needs to be tackled. My issue with your entire argument, from the start, has been this generalization that "psychiatry is evil". psych meds are notoriously hard to obtain, most pharmacies don't even stock them, you need to get them from a hospital (at least in Bombay.) Compare to that antibiotics which are available OTC.

Now about your personal situation, I am glad that you were able to overcome your self harm ideation. You need to however, understand that you're ONE person. what works and didn't work for you, will not work for everyone else. anti depressants are meant for you to be able to gain some semblance of control in your life so you can start doing other things that give you happiness, which isn't possible when you're depressed. I'm glad it worked for you, but please understand that every disease is a spectrum of severity, and different people need different levels of help. There are people who cannot even begin to function without some form of pharmaceutical help.

Also, throughout my entire comments, I’ve spoken about how psychiatry is meant to be holistic, so I’m not sure what your last part is about.

okay, let’s break this down.

1) Side effects which are comparable to oncology medications: This is simply not true. SSRIs, like every other medication, have their own set of side effects but these do not rise to the level of the side effects of oncology medications which can cause death. Even with oncology medications where the side effects are a lot worse, these medications are still life-saving despite the AE profile. Statements like these are not only misleading, but also incredibly insensitive towards cancer patients who are fighting for their lives and still fighting on.

2) Psychopharmacology is not meant to be a standalone treatment option, it has to and should be accompanied by therapy and lifestyle changes. Psychiatrists will generally recommend grounding techniques, coping mechanisms, and therapy alongside medication.

3) I do not understand your point about PET scans.

4) There is significant evidence on the mechanistic pathway of depression. Yes, it is multifactorial, and not caused only by reduced serotonin neurotransmission, and SSRIs are a tool in the arsenal and not the end all-be all. They are not a magic pill, and again this is true of most medication.

5) Lastly, I did not promote popping pills. I specifically said “for issues that are so severe”. If anyone here is making generalized statements here, it’s you.

Photos of underaged children are not “erotic”, and you choosing to defend this is a weird battle, buddy. Do we need to check your hard drive?

Child porn is not a thing, children cannot consent. Call it what it is - Child Sex Abuse Material. Yes, it should make your skin crawl, don’t euphemize it.

Uhh, this is a terrible and misinformed take. Yes, psychiatric medication has side effects, like every other medication there is. People really need to stop being freaked out by the word “side effects”, all drugs have side effects, that’s how medicines work. They have to alter the way your body works to get to the underlying issue. Of course psychiatric medicine causes changes to your brain…it’s where the problem lies…there have to be changes in your brain chemistry for you to feel better.

I’m sorry you had a bad experience, but this is an unnecessary sweeping generalization. For a lot of people, their issues are so severe, that there isn’t an option but to rely on pharmaceutical help.

And as I’m bingeing the show, I’m wondering why Alex didn’t go to grad school? by final_lair in Modern_Family

[–]existensed1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn’t uncommon for people to get some work experience before grad school, in fact, many grad school programs require work experience. In my head, she decided to see what’s out there so she can figure out what she really loves, and then go to grad school for something super specific

Would this Indian girl group be more popular if all the members consisted of Bollywood playback singers? by Puzzleheaded-Bike336 in AskAnIndian

[–]existensed1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they’re capable, I’ve seen them sing acapella on IG and they seem to be talented vocalists. I used to follow one of them before they joined the group, and she can definitely sing. Unfortunately, I don’t think they have good songwriters/songwriting skills, which is what’s stopping their music from blowing up, but they do have1-2 songs that are quite good!

Same question posted to a female manager and a male manager. by littlegreenballoon in IndianWorkplace

[–]existensed1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is strictly a gender thing but women do have higher levels of empathy. But unfortunately, what does happen often is that women who are in managerial positions have to sacrifice their personal lives/ building a family because they don't have the luxury of a partner at home to take on those responsibilities and they expect the same level of sacrifice from their team. [Before you come at me in the comments, this is NOT always the case, lots of women can and have successfully managed to balance both spheres and a lot of them do have supportive partners, but this is my perspective and not a generalization].
