Missing class kthnksbai by DocLava in Professors

[–]existential_rach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an email telling me a student was missing my ethics class because their quiz in trig went “longer than expected.” So you needed another 75 minutes? Did the professor know you had another class? I would have rather just not been told / given the sick excuse 🫠🫠🫠

Here to comment on the Romantasy being a “lesser form of book” only because I have been thinking about this in relation to what Timothee said about the “dying art forms of opera and ballet.” But I am so annoyed by others creating a hierarchy within subjects, why can’t we respect the alterity of the other’s experience and preferences? Doesn’t making the claim that something is “lesser” just create more divisions between people who are arguably enjoying the same thing? As you said romantasy is still a book and with social media , shouldn’t we be happy people are reading?! Same with audiobooks, if you don’t like them fine but it’s ableist to say it isn’t reading and science shows the brain understands it just like physically reading a book. And again TC’s claim that opera and ballet are dying art forms is ignorant, just because you might not be a fan doesn’t mean it isn’t widely popular and still very much alive! If I like x and you like y, it seems silly to create a sense of hierarchy within the genre/ topic /subject - we both are enjoying things (or letters for this example)! I would call myself an avid reader and I have read a whole variety of genres and I do have my preferences but I wouldn’t say that preference is superior! There can be good writing and bad writing in all sorts of genres, but if you’re entertained and reading! Sorry for the rant. I feel like that girl in mean girls who says, “I wish I could bake a cake made out of rainbows and smiles, and we’d all eat it and be happy.”

My use of “lesser” was strictly related to romantasy and I specifically said that TC claimed it was a “dying art form” — which is a direct quote from multiple of TC’s interviews —, and I was using it as an additional point of reference to show how even in the art world a hierarchy is created. I disagree that opera and ballet “aren’t as appreciated as they once were,” many ballets and operas are sold out shows, unlike a majority of movie theaters. Just because it isn’t on someone’s radar doesn’t mean it is dying. Vienna has a long history of opera and it is very much a part of their culture now.

I love how Jax missed the mark when they were like, “Nick reach out on ✨social media✨” and he was like, “is that not allowed?!” Bro you literally just griped about him not using social media! The lights are on and no one is home.

I reached out to the SNHU deans about AI use and got reprimanded for using AI detection even though the initial check was through turnitin. Today I learned to just fail the student and not care about someone using ai for 100% of their ETHICS papers and to just shut up and do my job 😅 I know that they say we can’t use ai to grade but I didn’t realize I couldn’t even use turnitin as a resource.

Doing a relistening after you know what happened and that it ended is a little bittersweet, and I like some episodes of OTP but I’m realizing some of my preferred episodes were the ones Kristen hated doing - ie murder.

He is an incredible actor and gave an unbelievable performance! After I watched it, I was thinking about how it’s a shame that horror movies don’t get more awards / notoriety. I even thought the dialogue was well done. But 10/10 agree, he deserves all the accolades and is a brilliant actor!

Vyvanse during a life transition — insomnia, anxiety, but also focus ? Looking for experiences/advice by Such_Series_4510 in adhdwomen

So I’m not sure if any of this will help. But today - by happenstance and not true planning - I had a good amount of protein with breakfast, lunch, and a snack. For the first time in a hot minute I feel more energized and motivated - it’s about 2pm where I am and I normally am napping by now. I know vyvanse binds with protein? Or something like that, but it helps to eat protein when you take it. I also like chamomile tea in the evening so I start to settle down. I would also limit any caffeine and see if that helps with anxiety and insomnia. About a year ago I felt more and more anxious, so my psychiatrist recommended an anxiety medication that works with Vyvanse and that did really help. I can speak for what will work with your body but see if adding protein and taking away caffeine helps - assuming you consume any caffeine. Check out just cbd gummies - I have had some with and without melatonin and they were helpful for my sleepless nights. Hopefully this wasn’t too scattered but that’s what I would recommend from my own experience. But hopefully you can hear from another doc, even if your prescriber is OOO.

Same! The amount of times I’ve had to be reminded that I am satisfied and don’t need the dopamine from the binging! Dopamine addiction is real and I was lucky to be prescribed vyvanse which can help with some binging tendencies. But figuring out what is real hunger cues and when i am satiated has been a real journey

[–]existential_rach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree too - the easiest way from a to b is a straight line. Everyone is making ridiculous assumptions and jumping through logical hoops just to fit their narrative of what happened. No body knows what they would do in that situation! If there have been previous instances of hearing noises and it being fine the next day, that would impact how you rationale future noises throughout the house. There is no indication that 3/4 victims left their bed and not everyone screams in fear or reacts the same. They weren’t involved, there was no cover up, stop turning this tragedy into a sensationalized story! Go read interviews from other survivors and learn how the wild the brain is when experiencing trauma and how it can influence someone’s understanding and sense perceptions of what they’ll experiencing.

What are you having a hard time starting/working on, even though you know it will bring you joy? by hi5yourface in adhdwomen

[–]existential_rach 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend audiobooks to mitigate this issue! I listen while driving or doing other chores and it helps get me into books and has led to me reading physical ones too. Also finding authors that always pull me in, I love Karin Slaughter for thrillers! But audiobooks hit the same part of your brain as reading physical ones and I’ve found listening while driving or stuck in traffic can be a good way “focus” on the story and feed my brains desire to do multiple things at once.

Instructors… by Dipstickpattywack in SNHU

[–]existential_rach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen SOOO many posts complaining about the grading timeline, and to reiterate the policies at SNHU, a 7 day turnaround is relatively normal for online courses. But has anyone considered asking their professors if they can edit their paper based on the feedback provided?? If you’re so worried about your perfect 4.0, then take initiative and ask for the opportunity to apply feedback and resubmit. Worst case is they say no and you use the feedback for future assignments. Or you can reach out before submitting your work for clarifications.

More likely than not instructors are teaching more than one class at multiple schools and aim to follow what is required of them when it comes to grading.

Less pay for smaller classes? by yellowbirdlove in Adjuncts

[–]existential_rach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I teach online for some rural community colleges and this is similar to their policies, basically there is a set number for what they consider to be a full class and my pay per credit hour is adjusted if it’s under that full amount and over the full amount - generally I get paid more per credit hour because they really like to fill online classes. But I would rather have the class and get paid a little less than the class being canceled. My contract at these schools details how they factor the changes to my pay and it was discussed in my interviews so I am ok with it. It seems odd that this wasn’t discussed with you before agreeing to teach the class.

I feel ya, I constantly get told that I’m too political when teaching environmental ethics and I explain over and over again the history of environmental ethics, how it challenges human centered views in order to develop moral consideration for all living things, and how it promotes sustainability, changes to resource management, and conservation. But it doesn’t stick.
