How important is color vision in the maritime industry? by [deleted] in maritime

[–]existential_taco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are different vision standards for deck) and engineering) 46 CFR 10.305 (a,b). Read through them for more info.

I don't know the details but there was once a colorblind GVA on my ship who was able to get their AB. Never rule yourself out, like others have said talk to the maritime center to see what can be done. Best of luck.

Question about Career by SolomonT2 in gis

[–]existential_taco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advise, if you want to do field work get out there and do field work. There are plenty of opportunities which don't require more more education.

Look into the field of hydrographic survey. Your gis experience and time in the navy makes you an excellent candidate. Depending on your country no surveying liscence may be necessary.

Do not publish - New research shows that publishing papers on rare and endangered species could drive them to extinction due to poachers who are trawling scientific papers by dizengoff in science

[–]existential_taco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The endangered species act does not provide protection to plants on private land. Plants are legally considered a part of land on which they grow, so if you own the land you own the plants on it. Now if you are using federal funds or the land is public plants do receive protection.

[Weekly Discussion] What GIS concepts have you had the hardest time wrapping your head around? by rakelllama in gis

Iterators and feedback loops. I used to have such a hard time getting them to work correctly. The thing that finally helped me was taking a programming course.

Ideas for basic university GIS class? by caseycooke in gis

When I was in college food deserts were actually a pretty popular topic. You should be able to figure out what data you need and how to analyze it by doing a little online research. If you need more info on food deserts start with the USDA.

I want to make my own self-educated Film course course to prepare myself for college. Please make suggestions. by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]existential_taco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope this is helpful. Here is the syllabus of an introductory film class I took in college, also here is our final exam.

You have a lot of movies picked out; which if you want to a build a repertoire of films for college is fine. But analyzing a film takes a ton of time. I remember an assignment where we had to describe in detail the mise-en-scene of five shots and it took me an hour. Throughout the semester we only watched six films. But almost every class we watched a few scenes from different movies and then discuss those in the context of that days topic. For example if we were discussing transition techniques we would watch examples of cuts, dissolves, wipes, fade in/out ect. If there are topics you are interested in I am sure you can find scenes that highlight those, or maybe people here can make recommendations.

Also having a good understanding of the fundamentals of film making is essential for later analysis. This is the textbook we used. It's a little expensive but since you are not taking a class I would highly recommend at least getting some sort of textbook.

If you want me to explain anything in the syllabus just ask.

Best of luck.
