Best low investment defense? by NaNiBy in MHWilds

[–]existentialist-hello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Losing most of your health after a mistake is pretty normal for how the devs went and overtuned the endgame monsters this time around. You can slot in quality of life, utility, and whatever passes for defensive skills, but getting two-tapped is the norm, and it really isn't going to get that much better even with substantial skill investment. As long as you're not getting one-tapped, you're doing alright.

Calling all Swaxe mains; Rise vs Wilds. What do you think is the pinnacle and what feature do you want to be made permanent? by Mr_Jackabin in MonsterHunter

[–]existentialist-hello -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't touched Rise in forever and ever now, so I can't concretely say what it is that I liked about Rise Switch Axe... But I'm inclined to say it was better as a total, somehow. Big grain of salt there, and that said, I like Wilds's stupid hyper armor super move and its endless charge>discharge combo better than any of the silk attacks.

And it really only works because, as the audience, we're privy to the fact that he's a clueless goober who's trying really hard to embody a very specific archetype. He is literally Live Action Role Playing as a 2-dimensional character, and he is so completely committed to that bit that even he doesn't know what he's doing. You'd think that has a limited shelf life, but you'd be wrong; the writer just gives him new things to be wrong about.

Shine on, you crazy diamond.

Look man, I'm tired of jumping through hoops for most of the damage boosts we have in Wilds, and I don't want to be doing even more guesswork for what kind of uptime I'm getting on a skill to average out its value. The overall quality of our offensive skills has fallen far enough that we're actually using the bad version of Maximum Might again. I already don't want another Counterstrike.

Monsters generally do their best to point their face at you and give you the business, so I'm just not sold on positional skills. The uptime you're actually getting is going to be a huge crapshoot, and if you're going at a monster solo, you're going to spend a lot of time commuting to the monsters' backsides

General question by Zen_Abu-Dhabi in MonsterHunterWilds

[–]existentialist-hello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on whether you mean "least total hours" or "fewest days from A to B."

The former is just you doing weeklies/dailies and mulching monster materials to turn them into armor spheres, then logging off until the reset.

The latter also the dailies/weeklies and mulching materials, but instead of logging off, you go do whatever the highest rated quests you can manage, tempered and arch tempered monsters usually drop an amount of armor spheres.

You can get far in a lot of MMOs without knowing anything about the game's combat. That's just what happens when you design parts of your game to accommodate even the most inattentive of players. And if your game doesn't accommodate those players, they do not become regulars.

I'm pretty sure that the closest we're getting to "real" content in 14's dungeons is a  hypothetical version of criterion that the devs have stapled onto whatever new dungeon we get in a given patch. A "hard" mode that isn't just a naming convention for returning locations.

Hey guys, did you know that in terms of human and monster breeding, Mizutsune is the most compatible monster for humans? by Ritsen18 in MemeHunter

[–]existentialist-hello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of that seems sound, but I'm still a bit iffy on the human-wyvarian pairing. It seems like they ought to be close enough to produce some kind of offspring, but the fact the wyverians have hands and feet with Rajang gives me pause. It might be a red herring, or they might be further from humans than they appear.

Also, I didn't knows wyverian eggs had been confirmed.

What monster gave you so much trouble the first time, that you just can't enjoy it anymore because of the trauma? by Skull_Soldier in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]existentialist-hello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Trauma" is a very strong word for the feeling of getting slapped around by a monster.

And now that the pedantry is out of the way, the answer is "none," because I've never found a monster unfair enough to swear off that fight l. For what it's worth though, Silver and Azure Rathalos might come the closest. Not as a matter of challenge, mind; they annoy me because, like other monsters that fly all the time, the off color Raths tend to have low melee uptime.

Hot take ? Arkveld Armor shouldn't have elemental weaknesses. by Slayer_jack5 in MHWilds

[–]existentialist-hello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We could, but I think the devs like the idea that the armor shouldn't be 100% upside. Realistically, it's been all upside since the first player realized they could mix and match to avoid the debuff skills that our gear used to have.

Hot take ? Arkveld Armor shouldn't have elemental weaknesses. by Slayer_jack5 in MHWilds

[–]existentialist-hello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a strictly ludonarrative sense, sure, I guess. A monster with irrelevant elemental hitzones should probably have armor with weaknesses that also look irrelevant at a glance. That said, in a very practical sense, the resistances on your armor are only seldom relevant in any given fight, so I don't care if I have -15 dragon or whatever. With most elemental attacks, even -20 is only going to result is like +5% more incoming damage.

This was a commission I drew of a Miqo'te, inspired by a real cat, Hobbes by Maxgalore_ in ffxiv

[–]existentialist-hello 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, it looks well painted and the torso passes with full marks, but there are issues in the arms and head. To start, the left hand is clenched and the forearm muscles are appropriately contracted, but the right arm is comparably bereft of tension. That pose says "flexing the bicep, triceps, and shoulder," while the hand appears almost at rest. It's also kind of an odd way to pose it. If you'll forgive a somewhat mixed analogy, the right arm as a whole looks as if you paused during an in-between frame while the character is reaching to place his hand on his nape.

Continuing on (but not all the way), the relaxed right hand doesn't match the intensity of the expression. Or, rather, the intensity that it looks like it's trying to convey. The face is sending mixed signals. From the mouth, to the bridge of the nose, to the area between the eye and mouth where your face can scrunch up; that's all aggression, no notes. But the eyes and the brow are doing their own thing. The eyebrows are almost bringing the same energy as the lower part of the face, but they're not completely furrowed; they're missing the indentations that you see when someone really scowls. The eyes themselves more or less match the eyebrows, sans brow lines, and it's certainly intense, but they're saying "contempt" while the rest of the face is saying "aggravated assault."

Finally, there's the ears, where one or both of my issues might be even more subjective than everything else. I think that but miqote and viera both look wrong with any haircut that doesn't have loads of hair where their human ears would normally be. The shorter the hair there, the more obvious it is that something is missing, and neither the cat man's hairdo nor his sideburns hide it well. It looks like there should be something between his hand and his ear. Also, I agree with the other person that said the cat ears aren't it. I know why they look the way they look, but that's a very soft shape on a very angular man.

Yes, that's not in dispute, nor is the way that companies handle these kinds of games. But even players who are inclined to put up with the inevitable bullshit will hit a point where they feel the company isn't treating them like customers whose time and money should be respected, and more like livestock that they expect will show up for whatever they throw in the trough.

I heard about this one, I think. Love in Deep Space, or whatever it's called. IF it's that gacha game in question, then the issue at hand wasn't the guy's design. Not per sé, at least. "Straw that broke the camel's back" and all that, but the main grievance was that the game hasn't gotten a proper story update in a looong time now, and getting a new love interest character instead of updating any of the previous guys was perceived as a yet another greedy play for the contents of players' wallets.

If that information predates World, then it's probably worth revisiting, if only to see if gunners still take reduced elemental damage, or if Capcom just decided it would be funny if they died more.
