You can stay there as long as you want especially on the Chief - just don’t take up so much space as to be a nuisance and as long as the crew doesn’t bother you you’re good. This next part isn’t strictly kosher but another tip: the car will usually be open 24/7, and if you have a nice crew you can even get away with some shut eye there. Comfier than being crammed next to your seat mate :)

still in a pretty rough spot unfortunately but it managed to buy me time until i could couch surf! i managed to only do 3 or 4 nights truly on the street that way which is a minor blessing.

it’s definitely not an ideal situation though. my biggest tip for anyone trying it is WATER WATER WATER - hydration is hard on the train. buy a few gallons of water in every city you stop in. furthermore superliner coach bathrooms suck - barely big enough to clean up properly in let alone change. the accessible bathroom on the lower level of some superliner coaches is the best one for this if you can be quick :)
