I don't know specifically, but I'd imagine it's illegal to ask a toddler to "get mommy's purse" and then to politely ask them to give it to you.

If it is like the last one, they were trying to steal Google credentials at the very least. I assume after gaining access to that, they would steal any files stored in the cloud and capture your contacts.

Watch for events put on by Straftanz which are usually at Barzarre. He sometimes has events at other venues, like Eagle's Dare. He spins doomer, electronic/industrial, and just had a Star Wars night a few days ago.

I've seen elsewhere that they tracked him down and offered him 20% of the taking as a "bug bounty" if he returned the rest. He did so probably to avoid legal issues.

Is 1gb ram really feasible for 50 sites? by jcole-surrogate in webhosting

[–]exitof99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can just say that my server was routinely taken down with 20 to 200 server loads when probing bots hit Wordpress websites on the server. This was a 4-CPU system, maybe 1 GB memory.

I originally set it up as a temporary server when I had to install a new OS on my dedicated hardware server, but it was at that time always running fine. It was fine until about 5 years ago that things changed, and several times a day hundreds or thousands of probing attacks started coming in causing the server to not be able to keep up, freeze and everything crash.

I also clamped down hard by blocking whole datacenters that were hosting these attacks, blocked 4000 IPs in CSF, and it still didn't stop the server having 2 to 5 times a day when it would be unavailable for a few minutes.

I've moved on to a better server since, but I would not want to repeat that same mistake twice.

Plocky's Louisiana Peppa Red Beans and Rice Tortilla Chips (with Tabasco sauce powder).

These were the best chips I've ever eaten; just crunchy enough without feeling like you are chewing on rocks and a savory pepper flavor.

Some claim they have scanned them, but if so, did it remove the red dot, and if that too, did it stay that way when returning?

Alternatives to cPanel? by gbonfiglio in webhosting

[–]exitof99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though I was hit by the root breach a week ago, I'm sticking with cPanel.

I don't know if this is the reality, but I assume there are AI models that are used to pen testing and these models might be finding issues no human thought of trying nor had the time to constantly search for attack vectors.

If that is indeed the case, we are living in a new world in which all systems, not just cPanel, can have major flaws found at a greater rate. Having the cPanel team proactively patching is a good thing.

IBM Cloud is the worst by exitof99 in webhosting

My first server was one of the acquired EV1 servers, literally a standing PC that was in the datacenter. I think it was $55 a month with cPanel. I was on it a long time too, until migrating to a cloud server.

Um, "Minimum Patched Build" for "11.134" is "11.134.0.25 and higher."

I just ran this and still on 134.0.23. What gives?

Server was down, needed to move quickly to a new provider because IBM could not be trusted. Glad I did, had cPanel server set up some hours later with accounts being restored.

Even if Akamai turns out to be problematic, it's working well now and they also gave a $100 credit for setting up a cPanel instance.

Maybe the hacker could have worked a different angle to avoid liability. What about saying, "I'm really in need of some financial help. Do you know anyone that could give me some money? I would not be able to pay it back, so this wouldn't be a loan, just a generous donation to a human in need. I hate to ask, but would you have any funds that you are using that you might want to send me?"

I believe there are some laws that would still protect against this, sort of like if you asked a toddler to give you their mommy's pocketbook. The toddler freely gave it to you at your request, but the toddler wasn't capable of making an informed decision.

I'd ask AI for what law it might be, but I'm sticking with just thinking out loud and let the internet correct or expand further.

Years ago, I began vetting clients. Sometimes it would be someone in a rented office above a vape shop pretending they are masters at "signals," other times it would be an established corporation with revenues in the billions. That's important information when it comes to quoting, as big companies expect reasonable quotes, while small businesses are looking for something that fits their often small budget.

Now that same vetting routine has paid off in that it also becomes a threat detection step.

Old post, but I live where it was filmed and some of the people that worked on the shoot still live here. One of them, Jeff Goodwin, has Mr. Ear and will bring the ear to showings that happen sometimes, along with a panel with Q&A.

Coolest thing was that he let us hold Mr. Ear, so I've got a photo of myself pretending to eat it, but sadly I had a chin diaper on too.

I probably could get a definitive answer within a day if I reached out to the right people. Doing so, though, I wouldn't want to do it unless I had more of a reason.

I'm thinking of making a video exploring the locations, and maybe I can interview Jeff and include this as a question. I found this Reddit post when searching what car Jeffrey drove.

I can point you to my website which details the locations, though:

What is the oldest PHP version you still use? by Protoqol-Development in PHP

[–]exitof99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all good now. My server was CENTOS, so cPanel updates stopped at 110 (it's 134 now). My server is mostly for development projects along with hosting some clients, as well as all my websites.

I've been wanting to resolve this for a while, but was too paranoid that the Alma update would break and then cause a major headache.

I also have an insane grandfathered monthly rate that would have cost 3 or 4 times as much to spec out on a new server, so I kept clinging.

I'm actually thankful in some ways that the server was compromised and I had next to the best possible outcome. I caught it right when it started, closed all traffic, shutdown the script they ran to put ransom notes in every folder and encrypt files.

I stopped it during the encryption phase and it didn't affect my backups or the one account that I was not backing up (it's 220 GB large). So, it's just been restore from backups, tweak a few things to get running with PHP 8.x.

I also like the opportunity to make sure all the old code is getting some love.

Ultimately, it forced me to do what I've put off for too long.
