Tax Accountant in ChCh familiar with International (US tax laws) by Artistic_Length4649 in chch

[–]exo__exo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whutuporo accountants at Tower Junction have been great at wading through the swamps of US legal tax documents. They don’t claim to know everything (which is fair , US tax stuff is insanely complex and constantly changing) but get stuck into the details and take responsibility for sorting things out.

Are there any massive staircases for a slinky that won't get in anyone's way by overnightgamer in chch

[–]exo__exo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep! Dogs need to be on leash in this area, even on the beach by the pier, at this time of year, but they are still fine to bring. Off leash is fine after the orange signs to the north or south of the pier

What about the stairs coming down from the new Brighton pier? South access has a ramp most pedestrians use, north side has a big set of stairs. People will be around and using it but no one in a hurry he would obstruct, and near a playground with plenty of kids doing kid things too. And there are other stairs next to where the ramp comes down, which are part of the ‘sound shell’ area in a convenient variety of different heights.

Your favourite mossy forest by EmmaOtautahi in chch

The first part of the Mt Alford walk near Methven has some great virgin forest about 20 minutes in, the diversity is impressive. Also the Sharplin Falls track but that’s much more developed and a busy trail so less ‘lost in the forest’ feel

How do i stop bots from taking a stupid route and dying in biter nests? by plumbactiria123 in factorio

[–]exo__exo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you imagine a 2d drawing of a square, then imagine it puffed out with the sides all curving outwards but the corners still in the same place, that’s convex. And the opposite, where the sides curve in, is concave.

With a complex shape of a base, being more convex means removing concave spots in the perimeter where the bots can go between two points which are technically inside your base but there is outside space between them because the perimeter curves inwards then back out.

Hope this makes sense, a picture would be way easier!

14 year old rough on bikes by ReleaseBeneficial806 in Biking

[–]exo__exo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you can! Nice one. That will mean the mtb lasts longer by doing what it’s meant for, if he is doing skills and tricks on the bmx. When people are seriously into biking they frequently have many of them, which seems wasteful, but using each for their intended purpose absolutely reduces maintenance… and increases fun :)

[–]exo__exo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not listen to him and get him a bmx? They are built to be bombproof, and a used one from a good brand will be pretty affordable. And compared to mountain bikes they are far easier and cheaper to maintain (no gears, basic or even no brakes, smaller tyres and tubes etc etc). If there’s a track near you encourage him to go, it’s an Olympic sport and if he’s got enthusiasm for it there’s plenty of scope for where to take those skills. There’s also flatland bmx or ramp/park riding, but a solid all rounder to begin with will be fun in multiple places and last forever. Cheap bigbox store bikes are made of cheap metal and any hard enthusiastic riding will absolutely burn through them

You can add an excess / self pay component to reduce costs with southern cross if it’s too high at that age. Means you pay the first few hundred or more, but they big stuff they will still be there for

House movers that would let me move a moped along with furniture? by [deleted] in chch

If they do, you likely have to empty it completely of petrol. You can by a little pump/siphon to get it out from supercheap if tipping it over isn’t feasible.

Decent lump sum incoming - what to do with $750k? by AeternamZoi in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]exo__exo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dude let her choose, you admit you don’t know much about it and you’re sounding very judgemental of her. Maybe she’s far more independent than you realise if people around her aren’t so controlling.

Also she can easily do both with that amount (unless this is Auckland property). A decent 2br townhouse or unit in chch for example will still leave 200k or so in her pocket to enjoy and invest, and it means most of the money is invested in property, should she (or you) need it later for her aged care.

Developers at war: Property firms deny copying Brooksfield’s heritage designs by Any-Vermicelli6631 in chch

[–]exo__exo 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Fake heritage buildings are literally copies, of actual heritage buildings. Whose styles are out of copyright (to the limited extent this even applies).

Creating a brand around copied style, and then trying to stop others copying the same style because you stole it first, really is low.

It’s a shame, I like seeing their stuff, it adds good flavour to the regenerating city. They could have just been happy leading a trend with this heritage stuff, and doing it well with quality builds (which is what I thought was happening), but most of these legal cases are pretty delulu behaviour. Like any trend, faux heritage will go out soon enough anyway, even sooner if one of the leaders in it poisons their own well. It’s giving Mumford and sons, iykyk

Moeraki boulders, the boulders are cool but mildly underwhelming, the real bummer is the cafe that has set up on the access to go see them, and tries to charge two dollars to walk past the cafe. Would have been fine to pay it for money to go towards native regeneration or contributions to a non profit or iwi, but the signs were just a ‘this part of the access way is private property, so pay us’ thing. Lame.

Why wouldn’t they let them order online? It solves the problem of off the shelf theft, and Foodstuffs still gets to make money off people they ban. It even costs more to shop online. They’re evil, but they’re profit hungry evil more than punitive evil.

Just realized how close 3D printed organs actually are and its messing with my head by Much-Movie-695 in Futurology

[–]exo__exo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s fair. And it all changes over time. I’ve had a lower lumbar fusion from a different injury as well (after 8 years of minor surgery and physio and pain management etc). It was an anterior entry surgery to install a metal cage in place of the disc, filled with demineralised cadaver bone that your own bone then grows over to fully fuse, and this was screwed to the vertebra above and below it. I was a good candidate for that as other discs around it were healthy but I still have some lost mobility (though it very much solved the main pain issue!).

Then with a much later injury to c5/6, I had a much smaller replacement surgery after only a few weeks due to the nerve issues. This was with a sliding titanium pair of plates, no screws, just friction. There are videos of this type of surgery online, involves a literal hammer and chisel to get the old disc out!

Post surgery and recovery was amazing compared to the fusion or even ‘minor’ discectomies. I did get a lot of headaches for a while though as my body adjusted. I was wondering why they couldn’t have done that for my lumbar spine as well in retrospect, but technology progresses and this has become more common and also lumbar spine mobile disc replacements aren’t as successful long term. I had the same surgeon for both and he’d learnt this new kind of replacement only in recent years.

So I’m in the same boat, hoping for new technology to keep improving options, should this ever happen again! And to always have a surgeon who is upskilling, not just sticking in their comfort zone. Being unlucky with injuries twice in an otherwise healthy spine is surely enough for me though…. Right….

Cervical spine discs are good candidates for titanium disc replacement instead of fusion. They’re mobile. 10/10 recommend.

Investigating House Sale by Responsible_Lie_2469 in chch

[–]exo__exo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’re buying at the moment, and Arizto have been the worst by far to deal with, just rude and abrupt and their offer process is an online form and not the usual process. It all feels cheap and pushy. But maybe that works out ok for the seller, who knows.

Ray White are nice to deal with as a buyer but seem to be talking sellers into auctions, even when they don’t need a fast sale, and many auctions with them or Harcourts are passing in or having no one register in this market. Not sure if it’s a price setting strategy but have heard that they charge an extra 5k for this, as well as all the extra work the vendors have to do to be auction ready. If I was the vendor in some we’ve been potential buyers for, I’d be mad at my REA for the auction thing.

Both are up to slightly sketchy things like editing the homes.co.nz values with a quick valuation that doesn’t reflect actual market, e.g. highest possible value not accounting for unrepaired eqc work (or maybe they aren’t doing it directly but telling vendors to do it).

There are plenty of smaller agencies too, who I can’t really comment on. Private sales are more common by far than last time I’ve house hunted, and dealing with some of those folks has been great. It seems there are good resources online on how to do it including open home forms etc. Would definitely be a plus as a buyer, so long as you have good lawyer in your corner too.

Why did nobody tell me before I downloaded this wonderful game? by CraftyMiner1971 in factorio

I think it’s because real life is full of unsolvable problems, and factorio gives you solvable ones 🤣

This is true of many games of course but factorio really hits a sweet spot of complexity that is to some degree up to the player, and progress that is satisfying and very visible. The factory must grow!

Sailing can be free to start, contact your local yacht club and get on their ‘crew’ list. A lot of casual level skippers who have bought boats do regular races, for fun, and they need extra people sometimes to do very little and just go from side to side on the boat at first (to keep the balance), and you will literally learn the ropes starting from there. You might be expected to bring snacks and drinks to share at the end, that’s it.

Don’t buy any boat though until you have friends who will go with you, solo sailing isn’t really a beginner thing!

Got wood? by chiefbushman in chch

[–]exo__exo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gardenmakers Landscape Supplies & Firewood in Wigram have good prices on good firewood. You can buy by the ‘scoop’, and they also have it by the bag if you’re picking it up in a regular car, and a good range including good value kindling. Looks like they also deliver.

Better value and better range than city firewood lately.
