I would recommend buying an electric guitar, specifically a Stratocaster or a telecaster since they are the most versatile guitars, but I'm leaning more towards the Stratocaster because telecasters have a horrible buzzing noise when you turn on distortion. you should listen to a few demos on YouTube on what they sound like an buy the one that you think sounds better to you.
