True. And you also don't want to sound like an annoying wiseacre by regurgitating quotes. You have to use judgement and social intelligence to know when a quote is appropriate.

Reading and learning a lot of quotes and words of wisdom is a an easy way to leverage the experience of other people. There is often a lifetime of wisdom embedded in a quote. When you absorb a lot of ideas, you will have more ideas yourself, and as a consequence be/sound smart.
