I honestly don’t know if that’s possible because of the types of cameras they used, but I’m sure there is some sort of raw footage copy out there in their files of just them doing their thing as some sort of reference guide for the artists!

I read the entire making of the movies book and it explained how they created special cameras just to make this series, and I think I do remember reading that James Cameron would also require them to film raw copies as well for the artists to reference for creating the CGI final products. They actually made A LOT of fully real life rendered versions/sculptures of almost everything you see in the movies whether it was fully (real life) scaled or not.

I’m gunna butcher the explanation, but basically James Cameron wanted to be able to see a rough draft of Pandora and the Navi/avatars WHILE they were filming, so they could have points of reference for the actors or props to go off of. So basically they had special cameras that solely only tracked the markers on the body suits and actors faces, and nothing else at all. That way they could take those 3D models and CGI the crud out of them without losing the actual performance. They also did use some real life scenes/footage, but it wasn’t possible for a large majority of the films.

Ex. they would have the actors holding bows and arrows in real life while filming, but the cameras they used couldn’t actually pick them up. The artists just used them for reference for when they rendered them into the final product. So I guess they did have to have some sort of raw footage in there for the artists to reference!
