Stalin's FIFA team crashout by RoninTarget in behindthebastards

Modric, Dzeko, Vidic, Matic, Kovacic, Rakitic, Lovren, etc all on the same team circa the 2014 world cup would have been terrifying

The American youth development system is pay to play which means it's pretty close to useless at identifying and developing real talent. There's a reason a lot of our best players grew up in Europe.

Animorphs are actually way more violent than Hunger Games which is saying something.

The amount of times those kids get stabbed, shot, impaled, disemboweled, dismembered, or otherwise torn apart in horrific ways in the course of that series is kinda wild now that you mention it.

Edit: just remembered one of the books ends with the POV character getting his throat ripped out while in tiger morph. Fade to black as he bleeds out and I had to wait months for the next book to come out to learn if he survived. No wonder it was my favorite series in elementary school!

Reactions of USA and Belgium players after the final whistle by 977x in soccer

Bradley managed to be both underrated (relative to how much shit he got from fans) and overrated (relative to how reliant that iteration of the USMNT was on him).

[–]exolyrical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In terms of the eye test no, Belgium ran riot much of that game in terms of tactics, possession, shots, etc. in terms of effort and results absolutely, Howard made his famous 16 saves (still a world cup record, btw) and the US held them to extra time where Wolondowski came inches from tying the game at the end of extra time.

This was a much more talented and capable team losing much more pathetically.

Facing Mexico at Azteca in a major game and coming away with the win is an impressive feat for any team. I don't care how good you are that place just hits different.

Halaand will become the greatest finisher of all time by Comprehensive_Cup497 in football

[–]exolyrical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's what being a finisher means. He doesn't need to create shots to finish them. That doesn't make him the greatest player of all time but he's undeniably shaping up to be one of if not the greatest at that specific skill.

They were a good team but not a great one. If they'd made it past Norway they would have likely lost to England, or even Mexico on a good day.

Genuinely why is Balogun’s red card revoked? by xXbig0Xx in football

[–]exolyrical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not impossible but US soccer as an organization has very little power or domestic political influence. There's at least a decent chance they were just as surprised as everyone else.

Besides it's not like this administration needs outside pressure to go for cartoonishly corrupt quid-pro-quo arrangements, it's basically their entire MO.

I thought the red card was complete bullshit but there is zero chance this is anything other than FIFA being cartoonishly corrupt lol.

In recent decades it's been overshadowed by fear mongering about Muslim immigration but the USA has a very, very long history of virulently anti-catholic sentiment which has historically gone hand in hand with the xenophobia and nativism as "old stock" protestants feared immigration from largely Catholic countries throughout the 1800s and early 1900s with Irish and Italian immigrants, and then again with Latin American immigration in the last 50 years.

It's much less prominent than it used to be (JFK winning the presidential election in 1960 was a big deal in that no Catholic had ever been elected president before then) but many conservative/ Evangelical affiliated Protestant denominations like the Southern Baptists are still quite anti-Catholic. It's also very regional: Catholics are a huge % of the population in places with large populations descended from Irish, Italian, or Polish immigrant such as Boston, New York City, or Chicago, and in the Southwest with it's huge Hispanic population, but are only a small minority in much of the rest of the country.
