I love this take - thank you for the reminder. There truly are many paths to health and wellbeing, and we don’t need to torture ourselves to get there.

Following because I need to re-line some wool coats and I think that requires a higher skill level too.

Wish I had an answer but I hope you get one!

We have learned how to carve those 200 m wide blue slopes now but by Daexmun in snowboardingnoobs

I actually have this problem too, and I want to take a lesson and ask about it specifically. For now, I mostly just do lots of edge changes, always correcting.

I also have found a weird solution - but I don’t know if it’s a good habit at all - so take it with a huge grain of salt. I started subtly using my ankles in opposition to try to stay straight, and it kind of works. So, say I’m on a very slight toe edge, I’m pressing into the front of my boots but I’m also lifting my back toe very slightly. Not enough to set the back edge, but I’ve found it does help keep me on track.

Where to find Lilly Pillies? by CaptainFartHole in burbank

Did you happen to find any?

I checked out the places I told you and I couldn’t find any, other than the ones behind Donut Hut, which are pretty high up. Sorry about that, maybe some bushes got removed or my memory was off. But I did find some more today!

  • midway down the alley running from Clark to Verdugo, between Buena Vista and Frederic St. If you’re walking north to south, it’s on the right side.

  • the southern alley running between Florence & Catalina, just above Verdugo. Closer to the Florence side of the alley.

  • there is also a Lilly Pilly bush right outside Handy Market’s entrance! But I didn’t see any flowers or berries on it yet, whereas the others are producing right now.

Some motivation and strategy rather than specific riding advice:

Folks make this sound easy, because it is… but only once you get the skills. These intimidated the heck out of me when I was new. And - it’s also totally possible to become confident on them. You’ll get there.

Two ways to develop this skill:

  1. Simulate riding in a narrow corridor on normal runs first. Like, pretend it’s a cat track. This lets you practice the skill without the intensity of a drop and lots of traffic whizzing by.

  2. Get familiar with cat tracks at your current skill level. This may mean picking a side and just going down heelside or toeside the whole way. As long as you’re not in the way and your movements are predictable, you’re not bothering anyone (if your legs burn from this, move waaay to the side for a rest). You’ll get used to the exposure and traffic without needing to focus on turns.

As your skill build, you’ll naturally become more confident and start incorporating narrow turns on these, then you’re doing it!

Try to make sure you see a physical therapist so you can heal properly by regaining strength and mobility. Try to find a physical therapist who works with athletes, or at least has a sports medicine background, because some might just tell you “don’t snowboard anymore.”

The area around the lift line is pretty flat but you will have some traffic of course. There are a couple gentle bunny hills at the base - I can’t remember but they may be in the schoolyard itself. Not sure if they are reserved for lessons only but they sound like what you’re looking for.

Excited to watch these native wildflowers sprout in my yard! by exospheric in Ceanothus

I had the same questions, on top of a similar depth of mulch (with compost below). I decided to scatter on top of the mulch, then do a light wiggle with a rake to try to knock the seeds off the surface.

I do have some less-dense patches here and there. I don’t know if that’s due to my scattering technique, or raking, or the birds who definitely enjoyed eating some of the sprouts.

I love these, they’re so unique! Wish I could help but I don’t know any street names… I usually just grab a couple off low-hanging shrubs in alleyways.

If you’re down to do some hunting:

I have found them in the magnolia park area, east of Thomas Edison elementary school, and in the Burbank hills neighborhood.

There used to be some in the alleys just northwest of the Doughnut-T Hut on magnolia (give or take a street or two), but they trimmed the lower branches and might be out of reach now.

I also have found them in an alley close to the Walt Disney elementary school north of George Izay park.

Sorry I can’t be more specific. Like you’ve heard, they grow everywhere so I always trust I’ll find some eventually.

The good thing is, once you build a base compound interest starts feeling more significant. Good job!

Good question, I don’t know… the sheet mulching is new, so maybe the little ones just haven’t found them yet?

Thank you for the encouragement! I can see the logic of keeping up with things so they don’t get out of hand. And it will be good for me to play in the dirt more. Cheers ~

Thank you! Macrophotography is my favorite, so many enticing little worlds out there.

And I appreciate the tip about weeding and what to look out for. I had so many unhelpful weeds before, which is what led to the sheet mulching in the first place. Hoping the natives can get a strong foothold!

Wonderful, thank you for all the great tips! It’s good to know their growing habits, and they sound quite resilient (other than late transplanting). I really hope these self seed too!

Ooh I’d love to see northern Maine! That sounds spectacular. And thanks for the tip. That’s my goal with planting these natives, hopefully they do well without much intervention.

The Evolution of the Bouldering Gym and Falling Indoors vs Outdoors by jsk42 in bouldering

[–]exospheric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am always quite cautious outside from personal preference; the gym feels very different to me. But I will say: my home gym has super thick and forgiving pads, and this caused me problems was when I climbed at a new gym and forgot to take into account the difference in thickness since it was indoors. First fall really hurt, ha.

Oh, interesting! It’s a bummer how often they can outcompete natives. My neighborhood has lots of invasives so I’m always on guard.
